WARNING! Airbags and related equipment (e.g. steering wheel) must only be disassembled, assembled and repaired by trained Audi Service Department personnel. – Before working on any airbag, steering wheel or steering column components, always disconnect the battery. – Disconnecting the battery alone will NOT prevent the accidental deployment of the airbag(s). Always disconnect the airbag power supply harness connector, and refer to the all airbag system Warnings and Cautions. – Make sure that no person is in the vehicle when connecting the battery Ground strap. CAUTION! Before disconnecting the battery, determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio. NOTES: ‹› Ignition/starter switch can be removed and installed without removing the steering column. ‹› Ignition/starter switch terminal identification. See: Diagrams/Connector Views – - – Where applicable, disconnect airbag power supply connector. Remove airbag. Remove steering wheel and steering column switches. – - – - – - Remove instrument cluster mounting screws (arrows). Place clean, soft towel or equivalent over exposed portion of steering column. Carefully tip back instrument cluster; be careful not to scratch face plate. Remove indicator lamps (with wiring harness) from instrument cluster as necessary. Unlock and disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors from behind. Remove instrument cluster. Removing NOTE: The ignition/starter switch and lock housing is shown removed from instrument panel for illustration purposes only. – Disconnect ignition/starter switch connector.

NOTE: Turn signals can be removed with headlight assemblies installed. – Carefully press out release lever toward rear using screwdriver. The position of the release lever depends on the headlight version: – Standard headlights: release lever is attached to headlight housing – Three-way headlights: release lever is attached to turn signal – - Press catch (lever) slightly down (arrow) and push turn signal lens out toward front. Disconnect harness connector and rotate and remove bulb assembly.

- Remove engine cover (arrows). – Remove noise insulation panel (arrows). – Remove front bumper. Refer to Body and Frame/Bumper/Service and Repair – Move lock carrier to service position. Refer to Body and Frame/Radiator Support/Service and Repair – Remove ribbed belt. Refer to Engine/Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories/Drive Belt/Serpentine Belt/Service and Repair See: Drive Belt/Service and Repair CAUTION: Mark the running direction of the belt with a crayon or marker before removing. Reinstalling a used belt in reversed running direction could damage the belt. – Unclip toothed belt guard on both sides and remove. – Turn crankshaft by hand to TDC. Marks -A- and -B- must align Check position of camshafts. Larger holes (arrow) of securing plates on camshaft sprockets must be on inside and must align If they are not in this position: Turn crankshaft one revolution further. – Remove sealing plug from left-side of cylinder block. Top Dead Center (TDC) mark on crankshaft must be visible or can be felt – Install 3242 crankshaft holder into opening. – Remove tensioner for ribbed belt. – Remove center and left belt guards. Notes: The toothed belt tensioner is oil-dampened. Compress it by slowly applying constant pressure. Use spring clamp from 2024A.

NOTE: Removing – Remove turn signal. Refer to Turn Signals – Service and Repair – Procedures See: Turn Signals/Service and Repair Protect bumper using cloth backed tape in headlight area to prevent damage to paint. – Remove bolt (arrow) 6 Nm (53 in lb) – - – Remove two bolts (arrows) 6 Nm (53 in lb) Disconnect headlight harness connector. Disconnect headlight beam adjusting motor harness connector. 1998 Audi A4 Quattro Sedan L4-1.8L Turbo (AEB) – Pull headlight out from peg mount at side (approx. 15 mm), lift slightly and then lift out carefully toward front, rotating if necessary. Installing – - – Install in reverse order of removal. Always align headlights to adjacent body panels (gap clearances) before securing. Adjust headlights after assembly. See: Adjustments

Toothed belt, removing and installing Special Tools and Equipment – - – - – - 3212 spanner wrench 3387 pin wrench T40011 pin T40026 locking pin T40028 socket T40030 camshaft adjuster gauge Removing ^ Lock carrier in service position, Refer to Body and Frame, Radiator Support, Service and Repair ^ Ribbed belt removed, Refer to Drive Belt, Service and Repair ^ Unscrew bolts (arrows) and remove ribbed belt tensioner. ^ Remove ribbed belt gear of vane pump (arrows) using 3212 spanner wrench as retainer. ^ ^ Remove 8 bolts -1-. Remove harmonic balancer -2- and thrust washer -3-. Note: ^ Thrust washer -3- is only installed on toothed belt gear with part number 06C 105 063 A. ^ No thrust washer must be installed for toothed belt gear with part number 06C 105 063 B.
