Caution! Bearing cannot be dismantled. Do not wash out bearings.Remove brake disk (brake line remains connected), refer to Brakes and Traction Control; Disc Brake System. Remove ABS impulse sensor. Remove stabilizer link from stabilizer, Steering and Suspension. Unfasten nut. Installation: Use washer (1). Tapered spigot and bore both free of grease. Replace self-locking nut. Brace on hexagon socket if necessary. Tightening Torque, refer to Steering Specifications. Press off track rod with special tool 31 2 240. Mark the installation position of the spring strut tube (1) in the swivel bearing (2) with paint – never mark with scribing tool. Marking is not required if the factory mark is still identifiable. Automatic Convertible Top Operation E36 Convertible Opening and closing of the convertible is done from one rocker switch in the center console. With the ignition key in position 1 (KLR), press and hold the switch until the processes is completed. No road speed can be present when operating the top. The indicator lamp (shown with the arrow) lights up continuously during top operation. The lamp will flash after releasing the switch if the opening or closing process is not yet completed. NOTE: The trunk cannot be opened during convertible top operation, or when the top is in the mid-way position. This is to prevent damage to the top storage box lid and trunk lid. Convenience closing from drivers door lock Models with a fully automatic top allow convenience closing from the drivers door lock. Hold the key in the lock position with the doors closed. The top will stop moving immediately if the key is released. Emergency closing procedures Should the convertible top fail electrically in the top down position it can be raised until the top can be repaired. To release the top motor drives and begin raising the top, raise the left side of the rear seat. Find a lever with an orange strap. Pull on the strap until resistance is felt and two audible clunks are heard. Open the storage compartment lid (note: The lid should open easily, if resistance is felt pull on the release lever again until it is fully disengaged). Grab the convertible top and lift it out of the storage well. Lift the rear bow to the vertical position and close the storage lid. To lock the convertible top to the windshield frame remove the plastic cover from the center of the front convertible top frame. Insert the allen key from the tool kit into the top latch motor drive. Turn the key counter-clock wise until the front convertible frame is locked to the windshield frame. NOTE: Do not operate the vehicle with the top down and the storage lid motor disengaged as the storage lid is not locked and could open during driving. Z3 Roadster

Remove upper cover from radiator. Remove alternator cooling hose. Remove fan wheel and fan coupling from water pump, refer to Fan Clutch, Service and Repair. Lift expanding rivets from left and right sides of fan cowl. Press center of fan cowl gently backwards and disconnect guide tab. Extract fan cowl and fan jointly.Installation: When installing fan cowl, attach left and right tabs to radiator brackets. Connect guide tab in upper center.

Remove trim from instrument panel See: Body and Frame/Interior Moulding / Trim/Dashboard / Instrument Panel Unclip ventilation duct. Unclip left and right linkage. Remove connector, cut open cable connector, unfasten screws and lift off cover. 1997 BMW 740i (E38) V8-4398cc 4.4L DOHC (M62) Unfasten screws and remove blower motor. Installation: If applicable, remove and install regulator for heater.

Remove fan clutch with fan impeller and fan cowl, refer to Fan Clutch, Service and Repair. Drain and dispose of coolant. See: Coolant/Service and Repair Note: The water drain plug is located on the exhaust side on cylinder 2 in the engine block. Installation: Replace sealing ring of water drain plug. Tightening torque, refer to Specifications, Mechanical. Vent cooling system and check for leaks, refer to Cooling System, Service and Repair. See: Coolant/Service and Repair Pull locks and disconnect water hoses. Installation: Refer to general instructions for work on cooling system, refer to Cooling System, Service and Repair. Loosen nut (1). Release screws on thermostat housing, remove thermostat housing. Installation: Keep sealing faces clean and free of oil. 2000 BMW 323i (E46) L6-2494cc 2.5L DOHC (M52 TU) Note: Coolant thermostat is integrated in coolant thermostat housing and can only be replaced as a single unit. Installation: Replace gasket (1).
