Remove alternator drive belt, refer to Engine, Cooling and Exhaust – Engine – Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories – Drive Belt – Service and Repair – Procedures See: Engine/Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories/Drive Belt/Service and Repair Note: Drain and dispose of coolant. Installation: Replace seal. Tightening Torque, refer to Specifications – Mechanical. See: Specifications Vent cooling system and check for leaks, refer to Engine, Cooling and Exhaust – Cooling System – Service and Repair – Procedures. See: Service and Repair M52/S52 The water drain plug is located on the exhaust side between cylinders 4 and 5 in the engine block (illustration). M52TU / M54 / M56 The water drain plug is located on the exhaust side on cylinder 2 in the engine block. Release belt pulley. Release water pump. 2001 BMW 330xi (E46) AWD Sedan L6-3.0L (M54) Tighten two screws (M6) into thread of water pump and water pump out of timing case. Installation: Replace O-ring and coat with coolant as anti-friction agent.

Only open sealing cover on expansion tank when engine has cooled down. Drain coolant, refer to Cooling System – Service and Repair – Procedures See: Service and Repair Remove fan cowl, refer to Fan Shroud – Service and Repair – Procedures See: Fan Shroud/Service and Repair Note: When removing the fan cowl, note the engine variant. Air conditioner Disconnect plug connection on temperature switch. Disconnect upper water hose. Disconnect lower water hose. 2000 BMW Z3 Roadster 2.5 (E36/7) L6-2494cc 2.5L DOHC (M52 TU) Disconnect expansion hose. Automatic transmission Remove transmission oil cooler lines, catch transmission oil as it escapes and dispose of correctly. Installation: Check transmission oil level and correct if necessary, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain. Check connection for leaks. Unfasten left and right radiator mounts by pressing detent down with screwdriver. Sectional view of radiator mount: 1. Screwdriver 2. Front trim 3. Retaining lug for radiator

Note instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery. Refer to Service Precautions. See: Service Precautions/Technician Safety Information – Disconnect battery ground wire and mask it. – Loosen the screws; remove the reinforcing pipe. – Remove cover (1) from fuel lines. – Unclip fuel lines (2) and line for reversing light (3) from bracket. 1997 BMW 328i (E36) L6-2793cc 2.8L DOHC (M52) – Unfasten nuts and remove cable. Installation: Note line routing. Tightening torque, refer to chart below – Unfasten screws from top and bottom of starter motor. If installed: – Unfasten nut (1) on support and remove starter. Installation: – - Check starter pinion and starter crown gear for damage. Removing intake air housing with mass air flow sensor, refer to Powertrain Management. Remove bulkhead heater (air collector). This operation is described in section on removing complete wiper console, refer to Wiper and Washer Systems. Place cable channel to one side. Remove adapter from brake force booster. Remove cover from injection valves. Unclip plug connections from oxygen sensors. Unfasten plug connection from VANOS solenoid valve. Lift connector strip off injection valves and place to one side

Removing and Installing Dashboard Trim Panel Safety Instructions For Working on Cars With Airbag Systems WARNING! If work is carried out in area of airbag Systems, e.g. on: – Door trim panels – Interior trims – Instrument panel etc. the ignition must be turned off in each case. – The ignition must always be off. – The ignition key must be removed from the ignition lock. This eliminates the risk of injury. – Disconnect negative battery lead. – Remove both trims for front roof pillar. See: Trim Panel/Service and Repair – Remove complete instrument cluster. See: Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators/Instrument Cluster / Carrier/Service and Repair – Remove passenger airbag. See: Restraint Systems/Air Bag Systems/Air Bag/Service and Repair/Passenger’s Side – Unfasten locking unit (1) and remove connector (2).
