1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR. 2. Remove the screw caps from upper steering column. 3. Remove the screws from upper steering column. 4. NOTICE: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly. NOTICE: Once the steering column is removed from the vehicle, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping the column assembly on its end could collapse the steering shaft or loosen the plastic injections that maintain column rigidity. Leaning on the column assembly could cause the jacket to bend or deform. Any of the above damage could impair the columns collapsible design. If it is necessary to remove the steering wheel. Under no condition should the end of the shaft be hammered on, as hammering could loosen the plastic injections which maintain column rigidity. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Disable Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Remove the steering wheel. Remove the SIR coil. Remove the ignition lock cylinder. Disconnect the theft deterrent immobilizer connector. Remove the immobilizer. Remove the ignition switch. Remove the windshield washer switch. Remove the turn signal switch. Remove the I/P driver knee bolster energy absorber. Remove the sound insulator. 12. Remove the coupler bolt from the coupler/steering column shaft connection.

REMOVAL Wheels must be in a straight forward position and the key must be in the Lock position when removing or installing column to ensure proper alignment of components during installation. 1. Remove inflator module as outlined in Air Bag. Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags(SRS). 2. Remove knee bolster and steering column reinforcement plate. 3. Disconnect electrical connectors from column. 4. Remove pinch bolt from intermediate shaft, Fig. 13. 5. Remove lower support bracket from vehicle. 6. Remove upper column support from instrument panel, then the column from vehicle. INSTALLATION 1. Install column in vehicle and support at upper bracket with two bolts, Fig. 14, do not tighten at this time. 2. Install column lower support bracket in vehicle, do not tighten at this time. 3. Connect column intermediate shaft to steering rack, install pinch bolt and torque to 35 ft. lbs. 1994 Cadillac Seville SLS V8-4.6L VIN Y 4. 5. 6. 7. Torque upper and lower column support bolts to 20 ft. lbs., then the lower bracket to column screws to 12 ft. lbs. Connect electrical connectors to column. Install knee bolster and column reinforcement plate. Install steering wheel inflator module as outlined in Air Bag. Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags(SRS).

Disassembly 1. Remove dash panel bracket and store bracket in a safe place to prevent damage to mounting capsules. 2. Place column in a vise using both weld nuts of either set A or B, Fig. 29. The vise jaws must clamp onto the sides of weld nuts indicated by arrows shown on set B. Do not place column in vise by clamping onto only one weld nut, by clamping on one weld nut of both sets A and B or by clamping onto the sides not indicated by arrows, as damage to column could result. 3. Inspect steering shaft to determine type of thread used for steering shaft nut. Metric type shafts can be identified by a groove located in area of steering wheel locating splines, while shafts with American type threads do not have this groove. If shaft has metric type threads, the forcing screw of Lock Plate Compressor Tool J-23653 must be removed and replaced with the metric forcing screw J-23653-4 before installing lock plate compressor tool on steering shaft. Compress lock plate using lock plate compressor tool, then pry snap ring 1988 Cadillac DeVille V8-273 4.5L from shaft groove and discard wing. Remove lock plate compressor tool and lock plate. Remove directional signal switch, lock cylinder and ignition key warning switch, then remove steering shaft from lower end of column. On power steering columns, remove steering shaft lower bearing from plastic adapter at lower end of column. Remove four turn signal housing to column jacket retaining screws and remove housing and shroud assembly. Remove three shroud to signal housing retaining screws and remove shroud. Using hand as shield to prevent lock inhibitor lever spring wire from flying out, remove lock inhibitor lever and spring wire. Lift ignition switch actuating rod, rack assembly, shaft lock bolt and spring assembly from housing, then if necessary, remove rack preload spring. Remove ignition switch actuator sector through lock cylinder hole by pushing firmly on block tooth of sector with a blunt punch or screwdriver. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Removal Procedure ^ Tools Required – J 42069 Timing Belt Alignment Kit – J 42098 Crank Hub Torx Socket Notice: Failure to follow the described timing belt inspection and maintenance may result in a broken timing belt and cause severe engine damage. 1. Inspect the cold start counter (also called a heavy duty register) with a scan tool. If there are any cold starts (below -28° C or -20° F) visually inspect the timing belt for cracks. It cracks are noted, do not reuse the belt. Replace the belt and clear the cold start counter. If the belt is okay, and is reused, do not clear the cold start counter. 2. Remove the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Powertrain Management. 3. Remove the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement. 4. Remove the timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement. 5. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolts. 6. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft sprocket. 7. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to 60 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). 2000 Cadillac Catera V6-3.0L VIN R 8. Install the J 42069-10 to the crankshaft sprocket with the knurled bolt. 9. Use the J 42098 to carefully turn the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction (clockwise) until the lever of the J 42069-10 firmly contacts the water pump pulley flange. 10. Secure the moveable lever of the tool to the water pump pulley flange. Important: Ensure that the crankshaft is not 180 degrees off TDC. The reference marks on the camshaft gears should be aligned with the corresponding notches on the rear timing belt cover at this point. If they are not aligned, the engine is 180 degrees off.
