Some customers may comment on an engine tick noise. The distinguishing characteristic of this condition is that it likely will have been present since new, and is typically noticed within the first 161-322 km (100-200 mi). The noise may often be diagnosed as a collapsed lifter . Additionally, the noise may be present at cold start and appear to diminish and then return as the engine warms to operating temperature. This noise is different from other noises that may begin to occur at 3219-4828 km (2000-3000 mi). Cause The 0-ring seal between the oil pump screen and the oil pump may be cut, causing aeration of the oil. Correction Inspect the 0-ring seal and replace as necessary. General Motors has decided that certain 2004 model year Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles may have been built with a steering column sensor that can wear unevenly and produce an erratic electrical signal. When the system software detects that erratic signal, power steering assist is lost. That signal is more likely to occur when the steering wheel is turned slowly. If this occurs, the driver will hear a chime, the Service Vehicle Soon light will illuminate, and the Driver Information Center will display “Power Steering.” Steering control is still maintained, although more effort is required at low speeds. The next time the vehicle is started, the power steering assist usually returns to normal and the lights in the instrument panel will be turned of{ but loss of assist can occur again until repairs are made.

Condition General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2001 model year Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban; GMC Sierra and Yukon XL model vehicles, equipped with an 8.1L V8 (RPO L18 – VIN G) engine. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the crankshaft position sensor can fail intermittently or permanently. If the sensor fails intermittently, the Service Engine Soon (SES) light may illuminate and the vehicle may run rough. In addition, the engine may stall, and if so, may re-start immediately or after a cool down period. If the sensor fails permanently, the engine will quit running and will not re-start.
