INTRODUCTION Vehicles equipped with engine or transmission/transaxle computers may require a computer relearn procedure after the vehicle battery is disconnected. Vehicle computers memorize and store vehicle operation patterns for optimum driveability and performance. When the vehicle battery is disconnected, this memory is lost, resulting in a driveability problem. Depending on the vehicle and how it is equipped, the following driveability problems may exist: Rough or unstable idle. Hesitation or stumble. Rich or lean running. Poor fuel mileage. Harsh or poor transmission/transaxle shift quality. Default data is used until NEW data from each key start is stored. As the computer restores its memory from each new key start, driveability is restored. Driveability problems may occur during the computer relearn stage. To accelerate computer relearn process after battery removal and installation, specified computer relearn procedures should be performed. See appropriate procedures under specified manufacturer.

Remove front timing belt cover (Refer to COVER-FRONT TIMING BELT). 2. Inspect both sides of the timing belt. Replace belt if any of the following conditions exist. See Fig. 326: Hardening of back rubber back side is glossy without resilience and leaves no indent when pressed with fingernail. Cracks (4) on rubber back. Cracks or peeling (1) of canvas. Cracks on rib root. Cracks on belt sides. Missing teeth (2). Abnormal wear (7) of belt sides. The sides are normal if they are sharp as if cut by a knife. Vehicle mileage or time at component maintenance requirement. (Refer to LUBRICATION & MAINTENANCE ) 3. If none of the above conditions are seen on the belt, the front timing belt cover can be installed (Refer to COVER-FRONT TIMING BELT). TIMING VERIFICATION

The blower motor is located on the passenger side of the vehicle under the instrument panel. The blower motor can be removed from the vehicle without having to remove the HVAC housing. 1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. 2. Remove the passenger side door sill plate and cowl panel. 3. Pull back the carpet to access the front lower air intake screw. 4. Remove the recirculation door actuator (Refer to RECIRCULATION DOOR ACTUATOR ). 5. Disconnect the recirculation door actuator wire harness lead from the routing clip on the lower air inlet housing and position the wire harness aside. 6. Disconnect the blower motor pigtail harness connector from the blower motor resistor block or power module, depending how vehicle is equipped. 7. Remove the one screw (from the top) that secures the lower air inlet housing to the upper air inlet housing (Fig. 8 ).

Fig. 36: Locating Ground Strap & ABS Sensor Bracket Fig. 37: Locating Upper Mount Nuts Disassembly The Strut assembly must be removed from the vehicle for it to be disassembled and assembled. See REMOVAL . For the disassembly and assembly of the strut assembly, use strut spring compressor, Pentastar Service Equipment (PSE) tool W-7200, or the equivalent, to compress the coil spring. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely. 1. If both struts are being serviced at the same time, mark the coil spring and strut assembly according to which side of the vehicle the strut was removed from, and which strut the coil spring was removed from. 2. Position the strut assembly in the strut coil spring compressor following the manufacturer’s instructions. Set the lower hooks. See Fig. 38 . Set the upper hooks. See Fig. 39 . Position the strut clevis bracket straight outward away from the compressor. Place a clamp on the lower end of the coil spring, so the strut

1 – CAMSHAFT BASE CIRCLE 2 – HIGH-PRESSURE CHAMBER Use this procedure to manually bleed aerated oil from the lash adjuster and remove sponginess. 1. Run the engine, bringing it to operating temperature in order to freshly pressurize and warm the valvetrain system oil supply. 2. Remove cylinder head cover(s). 3. Ensure the rocker arm is positioned on the base circle (1) of the cam. See Fig. 147. Rotate engine as necessary.
