1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 3. Remove the RH and LH valve covers. For additional information, refer toValve Cover LH and Valve Cover RH in this section. 4. Remove the right lower splash shield screws and the pin-type retainer. 5. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt. 6. Remove the nut and position the bracket and wiring harness aside. 7. Remove the upper generator mounting bolts. 8. Remove the lower generator bolts and position the generator aside. 9. Remove the generator mounting bracket bolts and remove the bracket. 10. Remove the bolt and the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. 11. Remove the power steering pump. For additional information, refer to Section 211-02. 12. Remove the bolt and remove the belt tensioner. 13. Remove the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal in this section. 14. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolt and the sensor. 15. Remove the 2 oil pan-to-front cover bolts.

1. Partially drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03. 2. Remove the upper intake manifold (9424). For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold—Upper in this section. 3. Remove the fuel supply manifold (9F792). For additional information, refer to Section 303-04B. 4. Disconnect the EGR vacuum tube (9E498). 5. Disconnect the EGR-to-exhaust manifold tube (9D477). Loosen the nut. 6. Disconnect the upper radiator hose (8260). Reposition the clamp. Disconnect the hose. 7. Disconnect the heater hose (18472). Compress the fitting Disconnect the hose. 8. Disconnect the intake manifold runner control (IMRC). 9. Position the water bypass tube (8555) aside. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Position the tube aside. 10. NOTE: Note the location of the six long bolts. Remove the lower intake manifold (9J447). 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the intake manifold. 11. Remove the intake manifold runner control (IMRC) if necessary. For additional information, refer to Section 303-14. 12. Remove and discard the lower intake manifold sealing components.

1. Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12. 2. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. Remove the battery and tray. For additional information, refer toSection 414-01. 3. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 1. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector. 2. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector. 3. Disconnect the wire harness from the bracket. 4. Disconnect the shift cable. 5. Remove the cable from the bracket. 6. Disconnect the wire harness from the bracket. 7. Remove the manual control lever. 8. Remove the hood. 9. Remove the wiper arm and pivot assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 501-16. 10. Remove the front upper radiator shield. 11. Install the special tool. 12. Install the special tool. 13. Install the special tools. 14. Install the special tool. 15. Remove the bolt and the upper fluid filler tube. 16. Remove the clips. 17. Depress the tabs on the plastic insert retainer and remove the cooler line from fitting. 18. Remove the transaxle retaining bolts.

1. If equipped with power seats, move the seat fully rearward. 2. If equipped with adjustable pedal system, move the pedal to the full forward position. 3. If equipped with a manual transmission, place the transmission in second gear. 4. Remove the passenger air bag module. For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B. 5. Close the glove compartment. 6. Position the battery junction box (BJB) aside. Release the mounting tabs. 7. Remove the bulkhead electrical connectors from inside the engine compartment. 1. Loosen the bolts. 2. Disconnect the bulkhead electrical connectors. 8. Remove the bulkhead electrical connector insulator. 9. Unclip the bulkhead electrical connectors from the dash panel. 10. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover. For additional information, refer to Instrument Panel — Steering Column Cover in this section. 11. If equipped, remove the valance panel. Remove the two pin-type retainers and release the expander clip. 12. Disconnect the restraint control module (RCM) electrical connector. 1. Release the locking tab. 2. Disconnect the RCM electrical connector. Release the wiring harness locators. 13. Disconnect the electronic blend door actuator electrical connector. Release the wiring harness locators. 14. Disconnect the climate control head vacuum harness connector. 15. Remove the LH and RH front door scuff plates. 16. Position the LH and RH door weatherstrip seals aside.

NOTE: Thoroughly clean the exterior of the transmission and dry it with compressed air. 1. NOTE: Position the transmission in Bench Mounted Holding Fixure in its normal upright position. Install Bench Mounted Holding Fixure on the transmission case. Position a drain pan under the transmission. 2. CAUTION: The torque converter (7902) is heavy. Be careful not to drop it. Remove the torque converter. Drain the fluid from the torque converter. 3. Remove the oil pump shaft (7B328). 4. Remove and discard the converter turbine shaft seal. 5. Install Turbine Shaft Holder. 6. Remove the fluid level indicator (7A020) and oil filler tube (7A228). 1. Remove the fluid filler tube bolts. 2. Remove the fluid level indicator and oil filler tube. 7. Remove the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor. 1. Remove the TSS sensor bolt. 2. Remove the TSS sensor. 8. Remove the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). 1. Remove the bolt. 2. Remove the VSS.
