WARNING: DISCONNECT NEGATIVE CABLE FROM BATTERY BEFORE REMOVING BATTERY OUTPUT WERE (B+ WIRE) FROM GENERATOR. FAILURE TO DO S0 CAN RESULT IN INJURY OR DAMAGE TO ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. 1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. 2. Remove generator drive belt. 3. Left Hand Drive (LHD) Vehicles Only: Remove generator pivot and mounting bolts/nut. Position generator for access to wire connectors. 2000 Jeep Truck Cherokee 2WD L6-4.0L VIN S 4. Right Hand Drive (RHD) Vehicles Only:Remove upper nut (generator adjustment nut) and both belt adjustment bolts. Remove generator lower nut/bolt. Position generator for access to wire connectors. 5. If equipped, unsnap plastic cover from B+ terminal. 6. Remove B+ terminal mounting nut at rear of generator.Disconnect terminal from generator. 7. Disconnect field wire connector at rear of generator by pushing on connector tab. 8. Remove generator from vehicle. INSTALLATION 1. Position generator to engine and snap field wire connector into rear of generator. 2. Install B+ terminal to generator mounting stud. Tighten mounting nut to 8.5 Nm (75 in. lbs.) torque. 3. If equipped, snap plastic cover to B+ terminal. 4. LHD Vehicles: Install generator fasteners and tighten as follows: – Generator upper mounting bolt-55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.) torque. – Generator lower pivot bolt/nut-55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.) torque. CAUTION: – Never force a belt over a pulley rim using a screwdriver. The synthetic fiber of the belt can be damaged. – When installing a serpentine accessory drive belt, the belt MUST be routed correctly. The water pump will be rotating in the wrong direction if the belt is installed incorrectly, causing the engine to overheat. Refer to belt routing label in engine compartment.

The Power Distribution Center (PDC) cover, the PDC housing lower cover, the PDC relay wedges, the PDC relay cassettes and the PDC B(+) terminal stud module (WJ only) are available for service replacement (Fig. 1 and Fig. 2). The PDC cover can be simply unlatched and removed from the PDC housing without the PDC being removed or disassembled. Service of the remaining PDC components requires that the PDC be removed from its mounting and disassembled. Refer to Wiring Repair in the index of this service manual for the location of the wiring repair procedures.

WARNING: The fuel system is under constant pressure, even when the engine is OFF. Always release fuel pressure before servicing any fuel system component. Fuel Filter And Shield REMOVAL 1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, and remove the fuel tank cap. 2. Raise, and support the vehicle for access. 3. Remove the fuel filter shield. Remove fuel filter hoses and clamps from the inlet and outlet fuel lines. Remove the retaining strap bolt, and remove the filter. INSTALLATION 1. Install the new filter in the retaining strap. Check the direction of flow by the markings on the filter, and ensure it is correct. 2. Install the retaining strap bolt, and torque to 12 Nm (8.8 lb-ft) 3. Install the inlet and outlet hoses, and clamps. Tighten the clamps securely. Reinstall the filter shield, and lower the vehicle. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.Using the DRB II select the Automatic Shut Down (ASD) Fuel System Test to pressurize fuel system and check for leaks. Refer to Powertrain Management / Computers and Control Systems / Testing and Inspection / Procedures See: Powertrain Management\Computers and Control Systems\Testing and Inspection CAUTION: Unless the test is stopped or the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position the fuel pump relay and the ASD relay will remain energized for 7 minutes by the ASD Fuel System Test.

WARNING: DO NOT remove the cylinder block drain plugs or loosen the radiator draincock with the system hot and under pressure. Serious burns from the coolant can occur . NOTE: DO NOT WASTE reusable coolant. If solution is clean, drain coolant into a clean container for reuse. REMOVAL CAUTION: If the water pump is replaced because of mechanical damage, the fan blades and viscous fan drive should also be inspected. These components could have been damaged due to excessive vibration. NOTE: The water pump can be removed without discharging the air conditioning system (if equipped). The water pump impeller is pressed on the rear of the pump shaft and bearing assembly. The water pump is serviced only as a complete assembly.

REMOVAL 1. Remove the heater-A/C housing from the vehicle. See: Housing Assembly HVAC/Service and Repair 2. Remove the foam gasket surrounding the core tubes. NOTE: Notice the orientation of the irregularly shaped gasket on the tubes. The gasket must be placed correctly to ensure proper sealing against the body during reinstallation. 3. Remove the screws and retainers that secure the heater core and tubes to the heater-A/C housing. 4. Remove the mode door actuator if necessary, for clearance to remove the core. 5. Lift the heater core straight up and out of the heater-A/C housing. 6. When replacing individual tubes, loosen and remove the round tube-to-core clamp, and pull tube from core. INSTALLATION 1. When installing individual tubes, insert tube into core ensuring that tube O-ring is seated in core and not pinched. Hold tube in seated position while installing the round tube-to-core clamp. NOTE: The round tube-to-heater-core clamp should be left loose enough to turn the tube in the core. Position the core in the housing, and then tighten the tube-to-heater-core clamp after orienting the tubes to the molded heater-A/C housing. 2. Lower the heater core into the heater-A/C housing. 3. Install the mode door actuator, if removed from housing for core removal. 4. Position the retainers over the heater core tubes. Install and tighten the screws that secure the heater core and retainers to the heater-A/C housing. Tighten the screws to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). NOTE: The grounding strap is to be attached to the lower heater core tube retainer. 5. Reinstall the heater-A/C housing to the vehicle.
