Repairs for Noise Complaints Regarding Seats This bulletin addresses complaints regarding noisy seats. Follow the steps to ensure that the problem is fixed correctly. A. Repair Instructions 1. To better analyze the seat noises, maintain the customer’s original seat positions, including cushion angles and backrest positions. It is a good idea to also store the customer’s seat positions in vehicle memory. Note: Seat noises can depend on individual seat positions involving the backrest and cushions as well as the manner in which customers enter and sit in the vehicle. Analyze the noise problem with the customer present. Note their interpretations of various seat adjustments and resulting sounds from each seat and back rest positions. Before performing any adjustments, be sure to unbolt the seat from the vehicle while keeping the electrical seat harness connected. With the seat unbolted, use the seat control switch to move the seats over the entire adjustment ranges; i.e., all the way forward, back, up, down, etc. Bolt the seat back into the vehicle. The majority of complaints will be remedied by simply loosening and refastening the seats. If noise still exists, remedy with felt and lubrication as specified in the Noise Kit (see Parts Information). Use only the parts from this kit. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration. WARNING: Risk of Injury to skin or eyes due to hydraulic fluid spraying out under high pressure Risk of poisoning due to consuming hydraulic fluid NOTE: Before starting work on the hydraulic system, depressurize the system Wear protective clothing and safety gasses 1. Empty pressure oil system at rear axle 2. Connect tester to rear axle connecting piece (57) 3. Pour suitable oil into oil reservoir (2) NOTE: For testing, increase the quantity of oil to approx. 0.5 liters above the “max. ” marking (a) on the oil dipstick (2a) 4. Disconnect return (flow) line (T) at oil reservoir (2), connect oil drain hose (061) to the return (flow) line (T) and guide into oil reservoir (2) Pay attention to secure hose routing When the pressure relief valve in the valve unit opens, the oil pressure in the return (flow) line increases to approx. 2 bar 5. Connect Hand-Held Tester (HHT) (089) part No. 65 11 0001 99, or equivalent, with suitable test cable (094) to data link connector (X11/4) WARNING: Risk of accident due to vehicle starting off automatically when engine is running Risk of injury due to being trapped and burns when intervening while starting the engine or when the engine is running 6. Start engine and allow to idle WARNING: Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off automatically Wear close-fitting, tight clothing Do not touch hot or rotating parts 7. Place HHT (089) in “lift” position NOTE: Only carry out the test briefly due to the high pressures. The delivery pressure of the pressure oil pump is limited by the bypass valve in the valve unit 8. Check opening pressure of bypass valve Delivery pressure at engine idle speed: 180-190 bar 9. Check delivery rate of pressure oil pump: Connect oil drain hose (061) to the return (flow) line (T) in a measuring vessel Ensure that there is sufficient oil in the oil reservoir. The pump must not draw in air under any circumstances Delivery rate at engine idle speed: 0.2 liters/min

Remove 1 Remove cylinder head covers Air cleaner mounted on vehicle. Air cleaner positioned at engine side. 2 Position piston of cylinder 1 at 40 degrees after TDC NOTE: Rotate engine at crankshaft in direction of rotation until 40 degrees marking on belt pulley/vibration damper is aligned with marking on timing case cover. The grooves on the camshafts must be pointing toward the inner V. Engine must not be rotated backwards. 3 Remove chain tensioner (2) 4 Remove camshaft Hall sensor (1) 5 Detach camshaft sprocket, take off NOTE: Tie together camshaft sprocket and timing chain with cable strap (5). 6 Detach camshaft bearing bridge (4) NOTE: Observe slackening diagram! 7 Remove camshaft Install 8 Install camshaft NOTE: Pay attention to camshaft marking when installing camshaft. See Camshaft code number and assignment. Oil the bearing surfaces! Camshafts must not be replaced individually for tolerance reasons. Pay attention to the correct position of the cap on the front end of the camshaft. 9 Attach camshaft bearing bridge (4) NOTE: Observe tightening diagram. 10 Rotate camshaft into basic position 11 Fit on camshaft sprocket NOTE: Take off cable strap (5)!
