IF YOU CONFIRM: The AWD Transfer Case needs to be replaced because: • The case is cracked, and/or • Internal gears are damaged. NOTE: Damage, if it occurs, may have been caused by operating the AWD system in the LOCK mode on dry pavement. ACTIONS: 1. Replace the following: • Transfer Case. • AWD Lock Switch with the new one listed in the Parts Information. • AWD Control Unit with the new one Listed in the Parts Information. NOTE: Refer to the ESM for component replacement information. 2. IMPORTANT: Attach pages 3 and 4 of this bulletin to the customer’s copy of the repair order and make sure the customer is handed these pages. • Pages 3 and 4 of this bulletin contain revised Owner Information for “USING ALL WHEEL DRIVE (AWD)”. 3. Inform the customer that the installation of these new parts upgrades the operation of the AWD Lock Switch. The AWD Lock switch will now operate like a 2005 Murano.

IF YOU CONFIRM The MIL is ON and code P1402 EGR OPEN is stored in the ECM. ACTION • Inspect the EGR valve for metallic debris. See the Service Information section of this bulletin for the specific inspection procedure. • If metallic debris is present, replace the Bank 1 catalyst and EGR valve. SERVICE INFORMATION 1. Remove the EGR valve as per the EM section of the respective ESM. 2. Inspect the EGR valve for metallic flake debris. (see Figures 1 and 2) 3. If metallic debris is present in the EGR valve, remove Bank 1 catalyst (rear of engine) as per EM section of the respective ESM. 4. Inspect both the top and bottom of the catalyst. • Bank 1 Catalyst–viewed from the top. (see Figure 3) 5. If the catalyst has loose material as seen if Figure 3 above, blow out the debris from interior of Bank 1 exhaust manifold. Remove the EGR valve and tube, and then blow out any debris from the EGR valve and tube. 6. Replace the Bank 1 catalyst and EGR valve in the reverse order of removal. 7. Clear stored code P1402 from the ECM memory.

IF YOU CONFIRM: • DTC P0400 (EGR) or P0402 (EGRC-BPT Valve) is stored in the ECM, and/or • The vehicle exhibits rough running or other drivability incidents, and/or • Difficulty in setting the EGR System Readiness Test (SRT) status to CMPLT. ACTION: Clean the intake manifold EGR ports.SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Remove the throttle chamber assembly and place it aside. • Refer to the EM section of the appropriate Service Manual (ESM). NOTE: It is not necessary to completely remove the throttle chamber assembly. • Only remove harness connectors, cables, and hoses necessary to allow the throttle chamber assembly to be placed aside. • Throttle chamber coolant hoses do not need to be removed. NOTE: Figure 1 gives a general location of the plugs for the EGR ports, but the plugs are not visible in the photo. 2/4 2. Remove the EGR valve mounting bolts and then move the EGR valve outward about ½ inch (see Figure 2). • This is so you can remove the plug for the “rear most” EGR port. Vehicle Application: Customer Concern: Tests/Procedures: Potential Causes: Tech Tips: 2004 Nissan Murano 3.5L, USA/Canada Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is ON. Bank 1 catalytic converter code P0420. 1. Check scan data for fuel trims to see if the system is in proper fuel control – look for 0% plus or minus 10% in generic or 90 – 110 % alpha in manufacture specific. 2. Verify there are no exhaust leaks. 3. Drive the vehicle and check the bank 1 rear O2 sensor activity on the scan tool or with a voltmeter to see if the bank 1 rear O2 sensor is cross counting like a typical front O2 sensor would. Catalytic Converter If in manufacture specific with the scan tool, Nissan displays fuel trims in alpha. 100% alpha is the same as 0% fuel trim. This vehicle has front air fuel ratio sensors – not O2 sensors. Bank 1 is the firewall bank. Bank 2 is the radiator bank. Before the catalytic converter lights off, the rear O2 sensor voltage is usually down around 0.2 – 0.4 volts or so but when the catalytic converter lights off, it uses up a lot of the oxygen so the rear O2 sensor voltage will typically reads around 0.6 – 0.7 volts and have some movement but not a lot of movement and should not cross count above and below 0.5 volts. The catalytic converter is covered under the 8 year 80,000 mile federal emissions warranty. 2004 Nissan Quest 3.5L, USA/Canada

Customer Concern: Tests/Procedures: Potential Causes: Tech Tips: Just did a tune up and cleaned the throttle body and now the idle is hunting up and down. 1. Perform the Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning procedure. 2. Perform the Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning procedure. 3. Perform the Idle Air Volume Learning procedure described in the Identifix article listed for this vehicle. It may be necessary to follow TSB# NTB05-067 and disconnect one or more fuel injectors as necessary to bring the RPM down and then perform the Idle Air Volume Learning procedure. 4. If the idle will not relearn, it may be necessary to bring the vehicle to the dealer to have the factory scan tool, try going through the relearn procedures. 5. If the problem still occurs, the vehicle may require throttle body replacement. Idle Relearn Procedure Engine speed at 200 RPM or more over the target idle speed will set this code. There is a TSB (TSB# NTB05-067) concerning this code that refers to disconnecting one or more fuel injectors to bring the RPM down and perform the Idle Air Volume Learning procedure. It often takes disconnecting two injectors to bring the engine RPM low enough for the idle relearn to work. The idle will not relearn if the engine speed is too high. During the relearn procedure, idle relearning actually begins when the engine is started. The TSB refers to using the factory Consult scan tool, but the manual procedure does work if the procedure is followed EXACTLY. The engine and automatic transmission (if equipped) needs to be warmed up too – follow the preparation instructions.
