1. On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, remove the shift lever. 2. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, perform the following steps: 2.1. Apply the park brake. 2.2. Insert the ignition key and turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. 2.3. Depress the brake pedal and shift the transmission to the 1 position. 2.4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the left sound insulator. Remove the right instrument panel sound insulator. If the vehicle is equipped with a multiple CD changer located in the center console, remove the center console. Remove the center sound insulator. Remove the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. Remove and retain the instrument panel storage compartment. Remove the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 11. Remove and retain the left and right speakers and the speaker grilles. 12. Use a flat-bladed tool in order to remove the windshield defroster grille. Retain the grille and sunload sensor for use on the next IP carrier. 13. 14. 15. 16. If equipped with a sun load temperature sensor twist the sensor 1/4 turn counterclockwise in order to disengage. Disconnect the brown electrical connection from the body control module (BCM). Disconnect the purple electrical connection from the body control module (BCM). Remove the knee bolster. 1998 Chevy Truck S10/T10 Blazer 2WD V6-4.3L VIN W 17. Remove and retain the instrument cluster. 18. Remove and retain the radio. 19. Remove the HVAC control assembly. Removal Procedure 1. Remove the upper fan shroud. 2. Install the J 46406 and the J 41240-5A to the fan clutch. 3. Remove the fan hub nut from the water pump in a counterclockwise rotation. 4. Lay the fan blade face down on a workbench. 5. Remove the fan clutch bolts from the rear of the fan blade. 6. Separate the fan clutch from the fan blade. Installation Procedure 2006 Chevy Truck Avalanche 1500 2WD V8-5.3L VIN T 1. Install the fan clutch bolts. 2. Install the fan clutch onto the fan blade. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 3. Install the fan clutch bolts. ^ Tighten the bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.). 4. Install the fan blade. 5. Install the J 46406 and the J 41240-5A to the fan clutch. ^ Tighten the fan clutch nut clockwise to 56 Nm (41 ft. lbs.). 6. Install the upper fan shroud.

PRE-ALIGNMENT CHECKS Ensure steering wheel is centered and front wheels are in straight-ahead position (to correct, shorten one tie rod adjusting sleeve and lengthen the opposite sleeve in equal amounts). Ensure none of the following conditions exist: Incorrect vehicle ride height (see RIDE HEIGHT ). Incorrect tire pressure, mismatched tires (differing size or type), excessive tire runout, unbalanced tire and wheel assemblies, loose wheel bearings, or loose wheel lug nuts. Loose or worn steering linkage/suspension components, or excessive play in steering gear box. CAMBER & CASTER ADJUSTMENT “C”, “G” & “K” Series Except 1999 Sierra & Silverado C1500 & C2500 (Caster Adjustment) 1. Check frame angle. See “C”, “G”, “K” & “P” (FRAME ANGLE) . If corrected caster is not within specification, remove frame bracket slots. See “C”, “G” & “K” SERIES (FRAME BRACKET SLOT REMOVAL) . Reset caster by loosening nut on end of each cam bolt securing upper control arm to frame brackets. See Fig. 18 . 2. Rotate cam bolts until caster is within specification. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS table. Tighten nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.

1. Place transmission in Park, turn ignition off and wait at least 6 seconds. Turn ignition on, engine off and observe 3 shift select buttons. If all 3 buttons blink once, go to next step. If all 3 buttons do not blink once, go to step 1 under TEST RESULTS . 2. During step 1) , if one button remains lit to indicate transfer case shift position, go to next step. If one button did not remain lit, go to step 3 under TEST RESULTS . 3. Shift transfer case to 4HI, to 2HI, then back to 4HI. If transfer case mode shifts between 4HI and 2HI, go to next step. If transfer case mode does not shift between 4HI and 2HI, go to step 5 under TEST RESULTS . 4. Apply parking brake. Place transmission in Park (A/T) or 1st gear (M/T). Turn ignition on, engine off. Place transfer case in 4HI position. Press 4LO shift select button. If 4LO shift select button blinks for 30 seconds then stops when 4HI button illuminates, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, go to step 7 under TEST RESULTS .
