An exhaust leak at the exhaust manifolds may be evident on some vehicles. This may be due to heat causing a reduction in bolt torque on the exhaust manifolds. ACTION Install new exhaust manifold bolts. Refer to the following Service Procedure and Part Application Chart for details. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. If an exhaust leak exists at the exhaust manifold due to a reduction in bolt torque, remove the manifold bolts and the exhaust manifold and check the overall flatness of the manifold. The manifold should not exceed 0.25 mm (0.010″) out- of-flat. Refer to the appropriate model/year Service Manual for manifold removal procedures. 2. If the vehicle is covered under the emissions warranty period, replace the manifold if it is out-of-flat. If the vehicle is out of the emissions warranty period, resurface the exhaust manifold. NOTE IF THE MANIFOLD IS TO BE RESURFACED, THE BOLTS MUST BE SHORTENED TO ACCOMMODATE THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THE BOLTS SHOULD HAVE THE LEADING “DOG POINT” REMOVED TO PREVENT BOTTOMING INTO THE HOLE. 3. Install the manifold using new mounting hardware, but DO NOT USE WASHERS TO INSTALL THE MANIFOLD. Torque the bolts to 34-47 N.m (25- 35 lb-ft). NOTE THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY TYPE OF GASKET USED BETWEEN THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND THE CYLINDER HEAD. 4. Check all exhaust system fittings loosened during repair for adequate tightness and allow engine to warm up. Recheck exhaust system for leaks and repair as required.

3. Remove the skidplate(s) if fitted. 4. Remove the skidplate support crossmember, if fitted. 5. Remove any exhaust pipes and crossover pipes that would interfere with transmission removal. 6. Disconnect the fluid cooler lines at the transmission. 7. Remove the starter motor. 8. On Ram: remove the engine-to-transmission struts, if fitted. 9. On Dakota and Durango: 1. Support the engine with a suitable jack device and wooden block. 2. Remove the bolts attaching the engine-to-transmission brackets to the transmission. 3. Remove the bolt and nut securing each engine-to-transmission bracket to the motor mounts. 4. Remove the engine-to-transmission brackets from the front axle, if fitted. 5. Loosen the brackets on each side of the engine block. 10. Disconnect and remove the crankshaft position sensor. Retain the sensor attaching bolts. 11. Remove the torque converter access cover. 12. If the transmission is being removed for rebuilding, remove the oil pan and drain the fluid. Reinstall the pan before removing the unit to protect internal components. 13. Remove the fill tube bracket bolts and pull the tube out of the transmission. Retain the fill tube seal. 14. On 4×4 vehicles, remove the bolt attaching the transfer case vent tube to the converter housing.

The oil leak is internal to the engine so no external oil leakage will be present. Two symptoms of this oil leak condition may be present. The vehicle operator may experience an engine spark knock during acceleration and/or an increase in the amount of engine oil consumed by the engine. DIAGNOSIS

1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE. Drain coolant. Disconnect all necessary coolant hoses, electrical connectors, vacuum hoses, fuel lines and control cables. 2. Remove generator and mounting bracket. Remove intake air duct hose. Remove upper radiator hose. Remove front Exhaust Gas Recycle (EGR) hose from intake manifold. Remove 2 intake manifold plenum supports between intake manifold and engine block. See Fig. 6. 3. Remove intake manifold bolts and remove intake manifold. See Fig. 5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten intake manifold bolts to specification in sequence. See Fig. 7 and Fig. 8 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
