FORD: 2005 Mustang 2004-2005 F-150 2005 Expedition, F-250, F-350 This article supersedes TSB 05-15-8 to update the Service Procedure. ISSUE Some vehicles equipped with a 4.6L 3-valve or 5.4L 3-valve engine may exhibit a ticking and/or knocking noise after reaching normal operating temperature. The noise may be described as “ticks”, “taps”, “knocks”, or “thumps”. In some cases the noise may be a normal characteristic of these engines. In other cases the noise may require further investigation. Sorting out and defining the noise as reported by the customer is important to successfully diagnose and/or repair the condition. ACTION Before starting diagnosis, it is critical to determine the specific engine noise the customer is concerned with. The customer should be interviewed to get their detailed perception and description of the noise, and to determine if the noise occurs at idle or above idle speed, and if the engine is cold, hot, or both. Attempt to duplicate the noise, and determine the source of the symptom. Refer to the following Service Procedure to help determine the source of the noise and if a repair is needed. The vehicle security module monitors the door ajar and remote keyless entry (RKE) status. Based on the door ajar status (doors, liftgate, and liftgate glass), the instrument cluster then energizes the interior lamp relay. When the relay is energized, voltage is supplied to the interior lamp circuits. The interior lamps all receive voltage from the instrument cluster through circuit 53 (BK/LB). Voltage is only provided when the instrument cluster receives a request for interior lamps from either the vehicle security module (when a door, or the liftgate/liftgate glass is opened) or the headlamp switch (when the interior lamp switch is placed in the interior lamps on position). The ajar switches are normally closed (with the doors, or liftgate/liftgate glass closed), and when a door or the liftgate/liftgate glass is opened, the ajar switch is opened alerting the vehicle security module that a door is ajar. Fault Idle would intermittently rev up to 4000 rpm. Car would also accelerate on its own up to around 3000 rpm when driven off. If clutch depressed during this time while driving, the engine would rev up to 4000 rpm.

At present the vehicle needs to be returned to a Ford dealer for the engine management ECM to be reprogrammed using dedicated equipment. It has been noted that affected Ford EECV engine management ECMs have a part no. 97FB-12A650-ASA. Later Ford EECV engine management ECMs have a part no. 97 -12A650-AFC. After the original Ford EECV engine management ECM has been reprogrammed, the Ford dealer should tag the Ford EECV ECM with the new part number

ISSUE Some 2009-2010 F150 vehicles equipped with a 4.6L 3V or 5.4L 3V engine, Expedition and Navigator vehicles may exhibit a low frequency knocking noise from the engine at hot idle only. The noise is predominately heard from the right front wheel well area and/or the right hand (RH) engine cam cover. This noise may be generated from the RH variable camshaft timing (VCT) phaser assembly. This procedure was created to diagnose the RH VCT phaser assembly. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE The Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) tests were developed specifically for the vehicles and Power Control Module (PCM) strategies for these vehicles. Per Workshop Manual (WSM), Powertrain Controls and Emissions Diagnostics (PC/ED) and Scheduled Maintenance Guide, review customer service history for use of any aftermarket oil filters. 1. Check for possible diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). a. No DTCs present, proceed to Step 2. b. If DTCs are present, discontinue with this procedure and refer to the PC/ED manual for diagnostics. 2. Engine must be at full operating temperature over 190 °F (88 °C) cylinder head temperature (CHT). 3. Connect IDS diagnostics tool and verify software version is at the latest level (63 or later required). 4. Begin a new vehicle session. 5. Open Tool Box selection.
