Water Pump Removal 1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03. 2. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) . 3. Remove the generator drive belt, water pump and power steering pump drive belt, and the A/C compressor drive belt (if equipped). Refer to Section 03-05. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. 5. Use Strap Wrench D85L-6000-A or equivalent to hold the water pump pulley (8509) while removing the four water pump pulley bolts. 6. Remove the water pump pulley from the water pump (8501) . 7. Remove the crankshaft pulley (6312) . Refer to the procedure in this section 8. Remove the five lower engine front cover bolts and the lower engine front cover (6019) . NOTE: Make a note of the location of the one water pump bolt with the threads in the bolt head for ease of installation. 9. Remove the six water pump bolts. 10. Remove the water pump . Installation NOTE: Ensure the mating surfaces between the water pump and the cylinder block (6010) are cleaned of any sealant material. 1. Install a continuous 2.0-3.0mm (0.079-0.118 inch) wide bead of Gasket Maker E2AZ-19562-B or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G348-A5, on the water pump and position the water pump on the cylinder block . NOTE: Refer to the note made during removal for the location of the bolt with the threads in the bolt head. 2. Install the six water pump bolts. Tighten the water pump bolts to 16-21 Nm (12-15 lb-ft). 3. Install the crankshaft pulley . Refer to the procedure in this section. 4. Position the water pump pulley on the water pump and install the four water pump pulley bolts. 5. Use Strap Wrench D85L-6000-A or equivalent to hold the water pump pulley , and tighten the four water pump pulley bolts to 16-21 Nm (12-15 lb-ft). 6. Install the lower engine front cover and the five lower engine front cover bolts. Tighten the five lower engine front cover bolts to 3-5 Nm (27-44 lb-in). 7. Lower the vehicle. 8. Install and adjust the generator drive belt, water pump and power steering pump drive belt, and the A/C compressor drive belt (if equipped). Refer to Section 03-05. 9. Connect the battery ground cable . 10. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03. 11. Start the engine (6007) and check for leaks.

Refer to the procedure in this section. 7. Lower the vehicle. 8. Install and adjust the generator drive belt, water pump and power steering pump drive belt, and the A/C compressor drive belt (if equipped). Refer to Section 03-05 for the installation and adjustment procedures. 9. Connect the battery ground cable . 10. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03 for the procedure. 11. A new part with the same part number must be installed if installation becomes necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts. 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 2. If equipped, remove the wheel speed sensor bolt. 3. If equipped, remove the wheel speed sensor harness bolt and position the wheel speed sensor aside. 4. NOTE: Apply the brake to keep the halfshaft from rotating. Remove and discard the halfshaft nut. 5. NOTICE: Do not allow the caliper and anchor plate assembly to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can occur. Remove the bolts and position the caliper and anchor plate assembly aside. Support the caliper and anchor plate assembly using mechanic’s wire. 6. Remove the 2 brake disc bolts and the brake disc. 7. Using the special tool, separate the halfshaft from the wheel hub. 8. Remove and discard the upper ball joint nut. 9. Using the special tool, separate the upper ball joint from the wheel knuckle. 10. Remove and discard the tie-rod end cotter pin and nut. 11. NOTICE: Do not use a hammer to separate the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle can result. Using the special tool, separate the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.

ISSUE Some 2001-2003 F-150, 2004 F-150 Heritage and 2001-2003 E-150/250 vehicles equipped with a 4.2L engine may exhibit the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P1131 and/or P1151 (system too lean bank 1 or 2). This condition may be due to leaking isolator bolts/port gaskets in the upper-to-lower intake manifold mounting area. This condition is sometimes intermittent and may not be apparent on a warmed-up engine. ACTION Refer to the following Service Procedure. SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE THIS CONDITION COULD ALSO BE DUE TO WARM AMBIENT TEMPERATURES AND THE USE OF WINTER GRADE FUELS WHICH HAVE VERY HIGH VOLATILITY AND MAY BOIL IN THE FUEL LINES (VAPOR LOCK) DURING A SHORT HOT SOAK. OXYGENATED FUELS WILL AGGRAVATE THIS CONDITION. IF NON-OXYGENATED FUEL IS NOT AVAILABLE, USE MID/HIGH OCTANE FUELS WHICH HAVE LOWER VOLATILITY AND MAY HELP ALLEVIATE THE CONDITION. 1. Perform a self test. If DTC P1131 and/or P1151 are the only codes stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) proceed to Step 2. If any additional DTCs are present, follow normal diagnostic procedures found in the PC/ED Manual.

Condition General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Campaign involving certain 1997, 1998 and 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire model vehicles located in fifteen U.S. high salt corrosion states and in Ontario. Quebec and Atlantic provinces; and certain 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire model vehicles located Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. These vehicles have the potential to experience moisture entering the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), as a result of corrosion after extended exposure to road salt, Moisture entering the PCM can lead to symptoms including illumination of the Check Engine light or the engine running rough. If these symptoms are ignored, the engine may stall and may not be able to be restarted.
