1998 Ford Mustang Steering Column Disassembly Assembly

1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . Refer to Section 14-01. 2. Remove steering wheel (3600) as described. 3. Remove steering column from vehicle as described. 4. Remove steering column lower yoke (3N725) , steering column upper bearing spring (3520) , suspension height sensor control ring (3C131) and steering column bearing tolerance ring (3L539) . Lower Steering Column Assembly 5. Remove turn indicator cancel cam (13318) by pushing up with flat-bladed screwdriver. Note direction of flush surface. 6. Remove ignition switch (11572) . 7. Remove bearing retainer (3C610) and steering column upper bearing spring . 8. Remove steel steering column bearing tolerance ring and steering column bearing sleeve (3518) . 9. Remove plastic bearing retainer from ignition switch lock cylinder bore. 10. Remove metal steering column lock housing bearing (3E700) from ignition switch lock cylinder bore. 11. Note position of steering column lock gear (3E717) to actuator lock. Remove steering column lock gear . 12. Remove two pivot bolts. Use caution as steering column position spring (3D655) will release when bolts are removed. Remove steering column lock cylinder housing (3511) . 13. Remove steering column shaft assembly from steering column. 14. Remove steering column lock lever actuator (3E715) and steering actuator housing (3F723) . 15. Remove lower steering column bearing (3517) and steering column lower bearing retainer (3D681) . 16. Remove tilt position lever pivot pin using a drift. Remove RH steering column locking lever (3B661) (RH and LH), steering column lock left hand lever (3D653) and steering column locking lever springs (3B664) . Assembly 1. Install steering column shaft assembly into steering actuator housing . 2. Install lower steering column bearing and steering column mounting bracket (3E660) . Tighten screws to 7-11 Nm (62-97 lb-in). 3. Install suspension height sensor control ring , steering column bearing tolerance ring , steering column upper bearing spring and steering column lower yoke to steering column shaft assembly. Tighten pinch bolt to 25-35 Nm (19-25 lb-ft). Item 1 2 3 4 5 A 4. Position actuator cam in steering column lock cylinder housing and install cam pivot pin with small hammer. Tap pin in until flush with steering column lock cylinder housing . 5. Install one steering column locking lever spring and RH steering column locking lever into steering actuator housing using a drift to hold in place. 6. Install the LH steering column locking lever spring and steering column lock left hand lever with steering column lock actuator lever pin (3F530) . Tap steering column lock actuator lever pin into place while driving out drift. CAUTION: Do not remove the steering column, steering wheel and air bag module as an assembly from the vehicle unless the column is locked to prevent rotation, or lower end of steering shaft is wired in such a way to prevent the steering wheel from being rotated, as this will damage the air bag sliding contact. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01. 2. Remove steering wheel (3600) as described. 3. Remove steering column from vehicle as described. 4. Remove steering column lower yoke (3N725), steering column upper bearing spring (3520), suspension height sensor control ring (3C131) and steering column bearing tolerance ring (3L539). Lower Steering Column Assembly 5. Remove turn indicator cancel cam (13318) by pushing up with flat-bladed screwdriver. Note direction of flush surface. 6. Remove ignition switch (11572) assembly. 7. Remove bearing retainer (3C610) and steering column upper bearing spring. 8. Remove steel steering column bearing tolerance ring and steering column bearing sleeve (3518). 9. Remove plastic bearing retainer from ignition switch lock cylinder bore. 10. Remove metal steering column lock housing bearing (3E700) from ignition switch lock cylinder bore. 11. Note position of steering column lock gear (3E717) to actuator lock. Remove steering column lock gear. 12. Remove two pivot bolts. Use caution becausesteering column position spring (3D655) will release when bolts are removed. Remove steering column lock cylinder housing (3511). 13. Remove steering column shaft assembly from steering column. 14. Remove steering column lock lever actuator (3E715) and steering actuator housing (3F723). 15. Remove lower steering column bearing (3517) and steering column lower bearing retainer (3D681).

Disassembly 1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01. Wait one minute for air bag diagnostic monitor (14B056) to deplete its stored energy. 2. Remove steering wheel (3600) as described. 3. Remove steering column from vehicle as described. 4. Remove steering column lower yoke (3N725), steering column upper bearing spring (3520), suspension height sensor control ring (3C131) and steering column bearing tolerance ring (3L539). Lower Steering Column Assembly 5. Remove turn indicator cancel cam (13318) by pushing up with flat-bladed screwdriver. Note direction of flush surface. 6. Remove two bolts retaining ignition switch (11572) and remove ignition switch assembly. 7. Remove bearing retainer (3C610) and steering column upper bearing spring. 8. Remove steel steering column bearing tolerance ring and steering column bearing sleeve (3518). 9. Remove plastic bearing retainer from ignition switch lock cylinder bore. Replace if damaged. 10. Remove metal steering column lock housing bearing (3E700) from ignition switch lock cylinder bore. 11. Remove steering column lock gear (3E717) from ignition switch lock cylinder bore. 12. Remove two tilt pivot bolts. Use caution as steering column position spring (3D655) will release when bolts are removed. Remove steering column lock cylinder housing (3511). 13. Remove steering gear input worm gear and rack (3524) from steering column. 14. For column shift cars, remove three screws securing shift lock actuator (3Z719) and transmission shift selector position insert (7A216). Remove transmission shift selector position insert and shift lock actuator. 15. Remove four screws securing transmission column shift selector tube (7212). 16. Remove pin retaining steering column lock pawl (3E691) from steering actuator housing (3F723) and remove steering column lock pawl.

Steering Column Disassembly 1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). 2. Remove horn pad and steering wheel (3600). 3. Remove steering column from vehicle. 4. Remove lower U-joint, spring sensor ring and tolerance ring. Column Shift 5. Remove turn indicator cancel cam (13318) by pushing up with flat-bladed screwdriver. Note direction of flush surface. 6. Remove bearing retainer (3C610) and steering column upper bearing spring (3520). 7. Remove steering column bearing sleeve (3518) and steering column bearing tolerance ring (3L539). 8. Remove ignition switch (11572). 9. Remove shift lock actuator retaining screws and remove shift lock actuator. 10. Remove transmission column shift selector tube (7212) and transmission shift selector position insert (7A216) (column shift only). 11. Using a drift, tap steering column lock lever pin (3B663) loose. Remove steering column lock lever pin with diagonal pliers. Remove steering column lock pawl (3E691). 12. Remove plastic bearing retainer from lock cylinder housing bore. 13. Remove steering column lock housing bearing (3E700) from lock cylinder housing bore. 14. Remove steering column lock gear (3E717). 15. WARNING: THE STEERING COLUMN POSITION SPRING (3D655) WILL RELEASE WHEN THE PIVOT BOLTS ARE REMOVED. Remove two pivot bolts. Use caution as steering column position spring will release when bolts are removed. Remove steering column lock cylinder housing (3511). 16. Remove steering shaft from steering column. 17. Remove steering column lock lever actuator (3E715). 18. Remove steering column lower bearing retainer (3D681) and steering column lower mounting bracket. 19. Remove tilt lock lever pivot pin using a drift. Remove steering column locking levers and springs. Assembly 1. Install steering shaft into steering actuator housing (3F723). 2. Install steering column lower bearing retainer and steering column lower mounting bracket. Tighten screws to 7-11 Nm (62-97 lb-in). 3. Install sensor ring, tolerance ring and spring to steering shaft.

REMOVAL 1. Apply parking brake and disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Remove bolt and nut attaching intermediate shaft to steering column. 3. Disconnect shift linkage rod(s) from column. 4. Remove screws from underneath steering wheel, then lift horn switch assembly from steering wheel. 5. Disconnect horn switch wires by pulling spade terminal from blade connectors, then squeeze J-clip ground wire terminal and pull it out of hole in steering wheel. 6. Remove horn switch assembly, then the steering wheel retaining nut. 7. Using suitable puller, remove steering wheel from shaft. When servicing a tilt steering column, the steering wheel must be in the full Up position when removed. 8. Remove steering column floor opening cover plate screws. 9. Remove shroud by loosening screw at bottom, selecting position 1 on manual three speeds and automatics and spreading shroud open, and withdrawing out of instrument panel opening while pulling up and away from column. 10. On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove shift lever cable. 11. On all models, remove instrument panel column opening cover. 12. Remove column support bracket to pedal support bracket attaching bolts. 13. Disconnect turn signal/hazard warning and ignition switch wiring harnesses. 14. Remove column from vehicle, then the column support bracket from column. INSTALLATION
