NOTICE: Always turn the crankshaft clockwise. (c) Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pul- leys and No.3 timing belt cover are aligned. If not, turn the crankshaft pulley 1 revolution (360°). (d) Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt. IF REUSING TIMING BELT, CHECK INSTALLATION MARKS ON TIMING BELT Check that there are 3 installation marks and front mark on the timing belt. If the installation and front marks have disappeared, before re- moving the timing belt, place 3 new installation marks on the timing belt to match the timing marks of the timing pulleys, and place a new front mark on the timing belt. 18. 19. REMOVE TIMING BELT TENSIONER Alternately loosen the 2 bolts, and remove them, the belt ten- sioner and dust boot. 20. REMOVE TIMING BELT 21. (a) REMOVE RH CAMSHAFT TIMING PULLEY Using SST, loosen the pulley bolt. SST 09960–10010 (09962–01000, 09963–01000) Remove the bolt, knock pin and timing pulley. (b) 22. REMOVE NO.2 IDLER PULLEY Remove the bolt and idler pulley. 24. REMOVE NO.1 IDLER PULLEY Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the pivot bolt, idler pulley and plate washer. 25. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT TIMING PULLEY Remove the timing pulley. HINT: If the pulley cannot be removed by hand, use SST and a service bolt to remove the timing pulley. 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower engine cover. On Celica and Camry, remove right front wheel. On all models, lower vehicle. 2. On MR2, remove right hood side panel and cruise control actuator. Remove right rear wheel. On Celica and Camry, remove alternator from engine and secure out of way. On Camry, remove coolant reservoir tank if it interferes with timing belt removal. Remove engine control (torque) rod from front of engine. 3. On all models, remove accessory drive belts. Using floor jack, slightly raise engine to remove weight from right (timing belt side) engine mount at timing belt cover.
4. Remove right (timing belt side) engine mount and bracket from front of engine. Remove spark plugs. Remove No. 2 timing belt cover and gaskets. See Fig. 1 . 5. Rotate crankshaft clockwise so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Cylinder No. 1 is front cylinder at timing belt end of engine. 6. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with “0″ mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. Ensure hole in camshaft sprocket aligns with alignment mark on camshaft bearing cap. See Fig. 2 . If hole in camshaft sprocket is not aligned with alignment mark, rotate crankshaft clockwise one full revolution.

1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature. Data Link Connector 1, Tachometer Connection 2. Connect tachometer test probe to terminal IG of the check connector. NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system before using it. Consult the operating manual for your instrument. Data Link Connector 1, Timing Connection 3. Using a service wire, connect terminals T and E1 of the check connector. 4. Using timing light, verify that the timing mark on timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle 5. If not as specified, loosen distributor hold-down bolt and rotate housing until the marks align. 6. Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing. 7. Remove service wire.

2. Remove engine stabilizer rod, engine mounting bracket and right engine mount brace, located near timing belt cover. Remove the alternator bracket for access to timing belt covers. Remove No. 2 timing belt cover. See Fig. 1 . 3. Use Pulley Holder (09213-54015) or equivalent and Holder (09330-00021) to hold crankshaft pulley. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt. Using puller, remove crankshaft pulley. Remove No. 1 timing belt cover. 4. Remove engine mounting bracket. Note direction of timing belt guide installation for reassembly reference. Remove timing belt guide. 5. Temporarily install crankshaft pulley bolt in crankshaft. Using crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate crankshaft clockwise until timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump body. See Fig. 3 . Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets are aligned with timing mark on No. 3 timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . If timing marks are not aligned, rotate crankshaft clockwise one full revolution (360 degrees).

Ensure belt is taut between sprockets. Fit tensioner pulley [8]. Tighten bolt to 34 Nm [7]. Push tensioner pulley against belt. Install automatic tensioner unit [6]. Tighten bolts evenly to 13 Nm [5]. Remove Allen key from tensioner body to release pushrod. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise. Ensure timing marks aligned [2] & [3] or [4]. If not: Repeat installation and tensioning procedures. Install components in reverse order of removal. Reset timing belt replacement warning lamp as follows: -Runner/Landcruiser: Remove grommet in speedometer housing. Depress switch using a thin screwdriver [11]. 17. Colorado: Remove speedometer housing. Remove screw indicated and insert in alternative location [12]. 18. Amazon: Lamp illuminates at 90,000 miles. Return vehicle to dealer.
