When a new brake master cylinder (2140) has been installed, or the brake system emptied or partially emptied, fluid may not flow from the bleeder screws during normal bleeding. It may be necessary to prime the system using the following procedure: 1. Use a tubing wrench to remove the brake lines from the master cylinder. 2. Install short brake lines in the brake master cylinder and position them so that they point back into the reservoir, and the ends of the pipes are submerged in brake fluid. 3. Fill the reservoir with new Ford High Performance DOT-3 Brake Fluid C6AZ-19542-AA or DOT-3 equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A. 4. Cover the reservoir with a clean shop towel. 5. CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water. Pump the brakes until clear, bubble-free fluid comes out of both brake lines. 6. Remove the short brake lines and reinstall the ones from the vehicle. 7. Bleed each brake line at the brake master cylinder using the following procedure: a. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal 10 times and then hold firm pressure on the pedal. b. Loosen the front brake line fitting with a tubing wrench until a stream of brake fluid comes out. Have your assistant maintain pressure on the brake pedal until the brake line fitting is tightened again. c. Repeat this operation until clear, bubble-free fluid comes out from around the tubing fitting. d. Repeat this bleeding operation at the rear brake line fitting. 8. If any of the brake lines or calipers have been removed, it may be helpful to prime the system by gravity bleeding it. This should be done after the brake master cylinder is primed and bled. To prime the brake system: a. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir (2K478) with new Ford High Performance DOT-3 Brake Fluid C6AZ-19542-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A. b. Loosen both rear caliper bleeder screws and leave them open until clear brake fluid flows out. Be sure to check the reservoir fluid level often and not let it run dry. c. Tighten the bleeder screws. d. One at a time, loosen the front caliper bleeder screws. Leave the bleeder screws open until

Master Cylinder Priming — In-Vehicle or Bench WARNING: Carefully read cautionary information on product label. For EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION seek medical advice. In the USA or Canada on Ford/Motorcraft products call: 1-800-959-3673. For additional information, consult the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if available. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake master cylinder reservoir to run dry during the bleeding operation. Keep the brake master cylinder reservoir filled with the specified brake fluid. Never reuse the brake fluid that has been drained from the hydraulic system. CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water. NOTE: When any part of the hydraulic system has been disconnected for repair or installation of new components, air can enter the system and cause spongy brake pedal (2455) action. This requires bleeding of the hydraulic system after it has been correctly connected. The hydraulic system can be bled manually or with pressure bleeding equipment. NOTE: When a new brake master cylinder (2140) has been installed or the system has been emptied, or partially emptied, it should be primed to prevent air from entering the system. 1. For in-vehicle priming, disconnect the brake lines. 2. For bench priming, mount the brake master cylinder (2140) in a vise. 3. Install short brake tubes with the ends submerged in the brake master cylinder reservoir (2K478), and fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with High Performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid C6AZ-19542-AB or equivalent DOT 3 fluid meeting Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A. 4. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal (2455), or slowly depress the primary piston until clear fluid flows from both brake tubes, without air bubbles. 5. If the brake master cylinder has been primed at the bench, install it in the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 206-06. 6. Remove the short brake tubes, and install the brake outlet tubes. 7. Bleed each brake tube at the brake master cylinder as follows: 1. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal, and then hold firm pressure on the brake pedal. 2. Loosen the rear most brake tube fittings until a stream of brake fluid comes out. While the assistant maintains pressure on the brake pedal, tighten the brake tube fitting. 3. Repeat this operation until clear, bubble-free fluid comes out. 4. Refill the brake master cylinder reservoir as necessary. Repeat the bleeding operation at the front brake tube. Master Cylinder Priming — 4.6L 1. CAUTION: Use only bleed screws on the engine side of the brake master cylinder (2140). The hydro-boost bleed screw, located near the dash on the hydro-booster casting, is for the booster cavity filled with power steering fluid, not brake fluid. Connect a clear waste line to the bleed screw closet to the booster first and the other end in a container partially filled with recommended brake fluid.

In most cases, the noise is gone after five (5) minutes. In severe cases, the noise may not disappear when lhe engine is hot. Under normal design tolerances when the piston pin bore is produced at the maximum tolerance and the piston pin is produced at the minimum tolerance (min-max tolerance) trace noise levels can occur. This level of noise does not affect the reliability or durability of the product. If piston-to-pin noise is detected and the customer desires the condition to be corrected, replace all six pistons with pin assemblies. The new piston sets have a minimal piston-to-pin clearance. Remember, piston-to-pin noise occurs in both park and drive at engine idle rpm and it varies in intensity depending on the number of pistons involved. A ticking sound means one piston is affected whereas a rattle or diesel type sound indicates more than one piston affected. The following should also be checked: 1. On W-Cars, make sure the right side engine splash shield is not contacting the engine crankshaft balancer. This condition usually happens cold and is caused by the shield curling when cold. 2. Reference Service Bulletin 57-71-06 for transmission rattle noise often confused for engine rattle noise. 3. Reference Service Bulletin 47-61-36 for Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner noise. 4. Check cylinder bore diameter and piston diameter as outlined in the Service Manual.

The respective rear brake assemblies are then applied. The rear wheel brake assembly contains a cable-actuated parking brake assembly. The parking brake releases the rear brakes using a remote release lever incorporated with the parking brake control. If the parking brake control is not fully released, the parking brake signal switch will illuminate the brake warning light. The parking brake signal switch is mounted on the parking brake control. The switch is held in place by a self-tapping screw and aligned with a locater pin. The drum brake parking brake system is self-adjusting, therefore cable tension does not need to be adjusted.
