NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide procedures to retrieve or clear trouble codes without the Super Star II tester. The anti-lock brake/traction assist system has on-board diagnostic capabilities. However, the module as received from manufacturing is equipped with a stored error code (61). This will affect the service procedure. The error codes can be retrieved from the ABS module in the following manner. 1. 2. 3. 4. Connect Super STAR II tester to connector located in engine compartment on the power distribution box. Turn on Super STAR II tester and latch button down in TEST position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Read first code output. After approximately 15 seconds, the next code will be output. Leave button latched until all codes are output. NOTE: Make sure that all codes are written down. 5. The diagnostic procedure should be as follows provided that the CHECK ANTI-LOCK BRAKE indicator stays on all the time or flashes intermittently. NOTE: If the BRAKE warning indicator is on or intermittently comes on, refer to the Warning Indicator Symptom Chart. NOTE: If there are more codes stored in the anti-lock brake control module memory, no codes will erase until all codes have been output by the Super STAR II tester, all malfunctions have been serviced and the vehicle is driven about 40 km/h (25 mph). This means that if a 20s code originally existed and was serviced, it can be ignored when running the on-board diagnostic the second time. If the first code received is 18, 19 or in the 20s and no other code is received, service the indicated component. No other codes can be output if a 20s code exists. After servicing the indicated 18, 19, or 20s code, repeat the procedure for retrieving error codes. 6. If a code 61 is received with any other code, ignore the code 61 and service the other indicated components. If, after correcting all other indicated malfunctions, the CHECK ANTI-LOCK BRAKE indicator is still on, service the Fluid Level Switch (FLS) circuit. 7. If a code 61 is received and no other codes are received, service the FLS circuit. 8. If no code, or only a code 10 is received, use the Anti-Lock Quick Check Sheet since some possibilities are not recognized and retained in the anti-lock brake control module memory. When dealing with intermittent ABS warning light ON concern, make certain to visually inspect all wiring related to the component associated with the code received.

1. Raise vehicle on hoist, and support lower control arm. 2. Remove wheel and tire assembly. 3. Mark position of upper eccentric camber bolts. 4. Remove upper ball joint spindle nut and pinch bolt, 5. Separate upper ball joint from spindle. 6. Remove nuts and camber bolts attaching upper control arm-to-frame, 7. Remove upper control arm. 8. Place control arm in vise, press ball joint out with ball joint press. See Fig. 1. 9. After ball joint has been pressed out install new ball joint (500-1109) with the words “install inboard” facing toward the inboard side of control arm. See Fig. 2. Incorrect installation may cause damage to the ball joint 10. Install ball joint boot with words “install inboard” towards the inboard side of control arm. See Fig. 3. 11. Install upper control arm. 12. Align upper eccentric camber bolts with marks made during removal. 13. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. CONDITION The driver’s side front CV axle has a 6-½ inch male inboard stub that fits into the transmission’s side gear. On the stub next to the housing seal surface is a carrier support surface that fits into the final drive sun gear inside the transmission (see figure 1). This sprocket assembly is chain driven with the reverse/overdrive sprocket by the planetary gear sets (see figure 2). The final drive sprocket assembly rides on the axle stub carrier support surface using a pressed, center bored bushing. This bushing wears the carrier support surface causing damage to the axle and eventually the transmission. SOLUTION If the carrier support surface of the axle being replaced appears rough and worn, then several possible failures need to be checked before replacing the axle or premature failure of the axle or possible damage to the transmission could occur. If the transmission’s internal oiling solenoid that lubricates this bushing fails, then the 2nd and 3rd gearshifts will not function. Although the Aftermarket lists this bushing, no tool exists to replace it. Ford only offer the bushing in a complete sprocket assembly making its replacement a very costly repair. The most common contributor to premature wear of this bushing is the vehicle not being within proper alignment specs. Without a four-wheel alignment, even though the front wheels may be centered to the rack, the rear thrust is pushing the front wheels causing stress on the front CV joints. The thrust forces acting on the front wheels while driving changes ALL the alignment specs resulting in the front wheels being in a constant turning action. This will wear the side gears and transmission seals as well as stressing this bushing. Another possible sign that alignment is affecting these items is a worn or torn inboard boot. Do not forget that worn motor mounts will also affect alignment thrust forces.

DESCRIPTION: The 2001-2005 MY XG300/350 and Santa Fe 3.5L incorporate an Electronic Throttle control System (ETS). NOTE: Please see TSB 05-36-002 for a general description of the system, its components and the INITIALIZATION procedure. The list of DTC codes has been modified. This TSB lists and explains the updated Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) related to the ETS system. NOTE: Some diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for 2004-2005 MY Santa Fe 3.5L and 2004-2005 XG350 vehicles have been added and revised. TSB 04-36-013 provides the newly added and revised DTCs in addition to the diagnostic procedures for these DTCs.
