CONDITION SUMMARY: ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE (EPB) ACTUATOR DIAGNOSTICS Situation: This bulletin has been developed to act as a diagnostic aid in the course of diagnosis and repair the following customer concerns of the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) actuator: • Electronic parking brake fails to apply effectively (the parking brake may not apply at all; or the parking brake performance may be below the required standard). • Electronic parking brake fails to release properly (brake drag). • Red brake warning lamp illuminated (constant or flashing). • Message center displays ‘Parking Brake Fault’ or ‘Cannot Apply Parking Brake’ Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) C1801-00 (C1801), C1802-00 (C1802), or C1803-00 (C1803 may also be logged. Action: If a customer should express the above concern and one or more of the DTC’s are stored, follow the Diagnostic Procedure outlined below in this bulletin.

PARKING BRAKE DISC PADS Removal & Installation (XJS) Remove parking brake caliper. See PARKING BRAKE CALIPER R & I under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove pad-to-carrier mount nut. Note pad position and remove disc pads. See Fig. 4 . To install, reverse removal procedure. Repeatedly operate handbrake actuating lever until adjuster ratchet stops
. PARKING BRAKE CALIPER Removal (XJS) 1. Raise and support vehicle. Fully release parking brake lever. Loosen parking brake cable adjusting lock nuts and back-off cable adjustment. Remove rear suspension mounting plate attaching nuts and bolts. Plate has 14 bolts and is located directly below differential carrier. 2. Remove rear suspension mounting plate from vehicle. Using a pry bar, move caliper arm toward center of vehicle. Disconnect parking brake cable from arm and slide back rubber sleeve. See Fig. 2 .

Customer Concern: The engine stumbles on acceleration and the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is opening too soon. Tests/Procedures: 1. With the engine off, use a vacuum pump to pump the valve open. It should pump up and hold vacuum. 2. With the valve still pumped up, reach in and crank the engine over, the valve should slam shut and be closed before the engine starts. Potential Causes: Defective Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Tech Tips: This has a negative back pressure type valve. The back pressure circuit in the valve gets plugged and causes the valve to open too soon. Diagnostic Codes: None

1. Raise and support the vehicle. 2. Connect the approved Jaguar diagnostic system. 3. Make sure J-Gate shift selector is in the Park position (P). 4. With the engine running and the foot brake applied, move the J-Gate shift selector through “P-R-N-D-4-3-2″ and back to the “P” position to circulate the automatic transmission fluid until the temperature reaches 30 to 40°C (86 to 104°F) on the
approved Jaguar diagnostic system. 5. When the automatic transmission fluid temperature reaches 35°C (95°F) check that the selector lever is in the “P. position raise the vehicle. 6. With the engine running, remove the automatic transmission fluid level tube plug.
Remove and discard the sealing washer.
