1. On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, remove the shift lever. 2. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, perform the following steps: 2.1. Apply the park brake. 2.2. Insert the ignition key and turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. 2.3. Depress the brake pedal and shift the transmission to the 1 position. 2.4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the left sound insulator. Remove the right instrument panel sound insulator. If the vehicle is equipped with a multiple CD changer located in the center console, remove the center console. Remove the center sound insulator. Remove the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. Remove and retain the instrument panel storage compartment. Remove the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 11. Remove and retain the left and right speakers and the speaker grilles. 12. Use a flat-bladed tool in order to remove the windshield defroster grille. Retain the grille and sunload sensor for use on the next IP carrier. 13. 14. 15. 16. If equipped with a sun load temperature sensor twist the sensor 1/4 turn counterclockwise in order to disengage. Disconnect the brown electrical connection from the body control module (BCM). Disconnect the purple electrical connection from the body control module (BCM). The airbag backup power supply must be depleted before component service is performed. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute. 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute for airbag backup power supply to be depleted. 2. Remove the two hinge-to-instrument panel screws and remove the glove compartment. 3. Remove the passenger airbag module. WARNING: When carrying a live air bag, make sure the bag and trim cover are pointed away from your body. In the unlikely event of an accidental deployment, the bag will then deploy with minimal chance of injury. In addition, when placing a live air bag on a bench or other surface, always face the bag and trim cover up. This will reduce the motion of the module if it is accidentally deployed. 4. Remove the instrument panel finish panel and the instrument cluster. 5. Detach the hood latch control handle and cable from the instrument panel steering column cover. 6. Carefully pry out both instrument panel end panels. 1996 Ford Escort L4-110 1.8L DOHC 7. 8. 9. 10. Remove the four screws and the instrument panel steering column cover. Disconnect all necessary electrical connectors. Remove the climate control assembly. Open the instrument panel ash receptacle. Push the instrument panel ash receptacle lid downward and pull the receptacle out of the center accessory console. 11. Remove the seven center accessory console screws. 12. Disconnect the radio antenna, radio chassis electrical connectors, and cigar lighter knob and element connector. 13. Remove the accessory console with the radio chassis and the cigar lighter knob and element.
