TIMING BELT & BALANCE SHAFT BELT Removal (Eclipse & Galant) 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine splash shield from right side wheelwell. 2. Lower vehicle. Support weight of engine with floor jack. If necessary, remove coolant reservoir. Remove
upper engine mount located near timing belt cover. Remove all drive belts. If necessary, remove drive
belt tensioner pulley bracket and power steering pump pulley. See Fig. 1 . Remove water pump pulley. 3. Remove crankshaft pulley. Noting bolt lengths and locations, remove upper and lower timing belt cover
with gasket

LUBRICATION SERVICE INTERVALS Transaxle/Transmission Check fluid level every 12 months or 15,000 miles. Change fluid and filter every 30,000 miles. If vehicle is operated under severe conditions, change fluid more often. If severe darkening of fluid and strong odor are noted, bands should also be adjusted. Transfer Case On 4WD and AWD models, change transfer case fluid every 30, 000 miles. CHECKING FLUID LEVEL Transaxle/Transmission 1) Park vehicle on level area. Ensure oil is at normal operating temperature, parking brake is engaged, and engine is at idle. Move gear selector through each position, stopping briefly at each selection. 2) Place gear selector in Neutral, and clean area around dipstick tube. Ensure fluid level is between lower and upper marks, but never over upper mark, in HOT range. Add or drain fluid if necessary. CAUTION: If severe darkening of fluid and strong odor are noted, change fluid and filter, and adjust bands. Transfer Case (All Others)

Installation Installation 1. Check tensioner pulley for smooth operation. 2. Check tensioner body for leakage or damage. 3. Push pushrod of automatic tensioner unit against a firm surface using a force of 10-20 kg. Pushrod should move less than 1,0 mm. 4. If necessary: Replace automatic tensioner unit. 5. Slowly compress pushrod into tensioner body until holes aligned [11] . Use suitable press or vice. NOTE: Use a suitable washer to protect tensioner body end screw when using press [15] . 6. Retain pushrod with 1,4 mm diameter pin. 7. Install automatic tensioner unit [10] . Tighten bolts [9] . Tightening torque: 24 Nm. 8. Ensure timing marks aligned [6] & [7] . 9. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. 10. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets on non-tensioned side. NOTE: Observe direction of rotation marks on belt. 11. Push tensioner pulley by hand against belt. Lightly tighten bolt [8] . 12. Turn crankshaft 1/4 turn anti-clockwise. Use tool No.MD998716. 13. Turn crankshaft 1/4 turn clockwise. Use tool No.MD998716.

Valve timing procedures Valve timing procedures Ensure crankshaft at TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure crankshaft pulley timing mark aligned with 0° timing mark on chain cover [1]. Ensure notch on camshaft points upwards [2]. If notch not visible, turn crankshaft one more turn. Install timing gears as follows: Ensure crankshaft gear and intermediate shaft gear timing marks aligned [3]. Install LH balancer shaft [4]. Ensure timing marks on intermediate shaft gears and LH balancer shaft gear aligned [5] & [6]. Ensure RH balancer shaft gear and oil pump gear timing marks aligned [7]. Install oil pump housing complete with RH balancer shaft. Ensure timing marks on oil pump gear and crankshaft gear aligned [8]. Install injection pump as follows [9] : Ensure notch on injection pump gear aligned with mark ‘T’ on flange [10]. During installation of injection pump: Notch on gear moves in direction of arrow. Install timing chain as follows:
