BRAKES – REAR BRAKE NOISE- “MOANING/GROANING” FROM REAR BRAKES WHEN COLD ^ NOISE – “MOANING/GROANING” FROM REAR BRAKES WHEN COLD MERCURY: 1999-2001 COUGAR ISSUE Some vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes may exhibit a “moaning/groaning” noise on initial brake application (cold soak). This may be caused by the rear brake pads vibrating in the caliper. Braking performance is not affected by this condition. ACTION Install revised Rear Disc Brake Service kit. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Lift and support vehicle. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual, Section 100-01. 2. Remove both rear tire assemblies. 3. Remove rear brake pads per instructions in the Workshop Manual, Section 206- 04.4. Remove U-spring from the top of the caliper and replace with L-spring supplied in kit (Figure 1). NOTE THE LEG OF THE L-SPRING FACES THE OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE.5. Remove adhesive backing protection from new pads with C-springs (Figure 2) and install new pads into caliper. Use Pads XS7Z-2200-M for vehicles without

Removal All vehicles 1. Remove the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04. Vehicles with rear drum brakes 2. Disconnect the brake tube. 1. Clamp the flexible brake hose. 2. Disconnect the brake tube union. 3. Remove the retaining clip. 4. Detach the flexible brake hose. Vehicles with rear disc brakes 3. Detach the flexible brake hose and the brake pad wear sensor wiring loom (if equipped) from the strut and spring assembly. 4. Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor electrical connector (if equipped). 5. Detach the anti-lock brake system (ABS) sensor and wiring loom. All Vehicles 6. Detach the stabilizer bar connecting link and bushing from the front arm. 7. Detach the rear arm from the wheel spindle. 8. Detach the tie-bar from the wheel spindle. 9. Detach the front arm from the wheel spindle. 10. Remove the wheel spindle to strut and spring assembly pinch bolt. 11. CAUTION: Secure the wheel spindle to prevent damage to the parking brake cable and brake hose (disc brake vehicles only). Detach the wheel spindle from the strut and spring assembly. 12. Detach the strut and spring assembly from the crossmember. 1. Raise the strut and spring assembly on a jack. 2. Detach the strut and spring assembly from the crossmember. 13. Remove the strut and spring assembly.

1. NOTE: The location of engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine. Remove the front wheels. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04. 2. Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 3. Remove the hood. 4. Remove the bolts and the water pump pulley cover. 1. Detach the coolant hose from the clip. 2. Remove the bolts. 3. Remove the cover. 5. Remove the air cleaner (ACL). For additional information, refer to Section 303-12B. 6. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03. 7. Disconnect the accelerator and speed control cables. 1. Detach the cables from the bracket. 2. Disconnect the accelerator and speed control cables. 8. Remove the selector cable. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Disconnect the cable. 9. Disconnect the bulkhead electrical connectors. 1. Disconnect the electrical connector. 2. Remove the bolt and disconnect the electrical connector. 10. Detach the central junction box (CJB) and position it to one side. 11. Disconnect the cables. 1. Battery cables. 2. Electrical connector. 3. Ground cable. 12. Disconnect the fan motor electrical connectors. 13. Remove the battery bracket bolts and remove the two ground cables. 14. Remove the battery bracket. 15. Disconnect the fuel line. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00. 16. Disconnect the heater hoses. 17. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the radiator and from the coolant passage.

All Vehicles 1. CAUTION: The maximum amount by which the engine management system will adjust the camshaft timing (VCT control unit) is limited to two degrees. As a result of this an extremely high degree of accuracy is required for any work which affects the valve timing. NOTE: The locations of engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine. NOTE: Operation steps which only apply to certain model variants and therefore do not apply to all vehicles are clearly marked. Disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 3. Loosen the right-hand front wheel nuts. 4. Remove the right-hand front wheel. 5. Remove the engine underschield (if equipped). 6. Remove the right-hand front splash shield. 7. NOTE: Mark the accessory drive belt direction if the belt is to be reused. Remove the accessory drive belt. 1. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts. 2. Working clockwise, loosen the belt and remove it. Remove the water pump pulley. 4. Remove the belt idler pulley. 8. NOTE: Using the access hole in the bottom of transaxle case to stop rotation of engine. Remove the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper. 9. CAUTION: The removal of the lower part of the engine front cover is necessary to avoid damage to the timing belt. Remove the lower part of the engine front cover. Vehicles with manual transaxle 10. Loosen the center bolt of the right-hand engine support insulator two turns. Vehicles with automatic transaxle 11. Loosen the center bolt of the right-hand engine support insulator two turns. All Vehicles 12. Loosen the center bolt of the left-hand engine support insulator two turns. 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Detach the coolant expansion tank and position it to one side. Disconnect the speed control cable (if equipped) from the coolant expansion tank.
