some 2000-2002 model year Nissan Sentra vehicles equipped with the 1.8 liter engine and some 2002-2003 model year Nissan Sentra vehicles equipped with the 2.5 liter engine may have a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety. The engine might stop running while being driven due to contamination of the Engine Control Module (ECM) by the inner lining material. This may also result in the “Service Engine Soon” light coming on or poor driveability. If the engine stops running while driving, this could result in a crash without warning. SERVICE PROCEDURE Remove/discard the Foam from the inside of the ECM Case Holder as follows. The ECM Case Holder will have to be re-positioned (moved) to do this procedure. NOTE: • Use suitable covers to protect vehicle paint, trim, etc. when doing this procedure. • Step one (below) only applies to vehicles equipped with a Strut Tower Cross Bar. • Doing step one will allow clearance for removing the ECM Case Holder from the engine room wall. 1. If equipped, re-position the Strut Tower Cross Bar and remove the Strut Tower Cross Bar Mounting Bracket as follows: a. Remove the nut/bolt that holds the Strut Tower Cross Bar to the Strut Tower Cross Bar Mounting Bracket (see Figure 1). b. Reposition the Strut Tower Cross Bar UP and OUT of the way. c. Take off three Nuts and remove the Strut Tower Cross Bar Mounting Bracket (see Figure 2). 2. Remove two Screws that hold the Main Wiring Harness Support Bracket to the Strut Tower (see Figure 3). 3. Disconnect the Rubber Vent Tube from the ECM Case Holder (see Figure 4). 4. If equipped, remove two Screws and re-position the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor (see Figure 5). 5. Re-position the Throttle Cable Guide by removing it from the Metal Tab (see Figure 5).

The C3I ignition system uses a waste spark method of spark distribution. In this type of ignition system, the ignition module triggers the correct coil pair, based on both signals from the crankshaft sensor, resulting in both spark plugs firing at the same time. One cylinder is on the compression cycle, while the other one is on the exhaust cycle, resulting in a lower energy requirement to fire the spark plug on the exhaust cycle. The remaining high voltage is used to fire the spark plug on the compression cycle. During cranking, the ignition module monitors the dual crank sensor sync signal. The sync signal is used to determine the correct cylinder pair to spark first. After the sync signal has been processed by the ignition module, it sends a fuel control reference pulse to the ECM. When the ECM receives this pulse, it will command all six injectors to open for one shot of fuel in all cylinders. After the priming, the injectors are left off for the next six fuel control reference pulses from the ignition module. This allows each cylinder a chance to use the fuel from the priming shot. During this waiting period, a cam pulse will have been received by the ECM. Now the ECM begins to operate the injectors sequentially, based on true camshaft position. However, if the cam signal is not present at start-up a Code 41 will set and the ECM will start sequential fuel delivery in any old random pattern. There is a 1 chance in 6 that fuel delivery will be correct. The sync signal is used only by the ignition module. It is used for spark synchronization at start-up only and not passed on to the ECM

DTC P0500: VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) MALFUNCTION (ES 300 & HIGHLANDER) CAUTION: If ECM replacement is instructed in following testing, always ensure ECM harness connector and ground circuit are okay. If either are suspect, repair and repeat testing to confirm ECM malfunction. If ECM is replaced, ECM must be programmed with proper ignition key code for engine immobilizer system. For programming procedures, see COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. NOTE: For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS . Circuit Description Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensors detect wheel speed and sends signals to ABS ECU. The ABS ECU converts signals into a 4-pulse signal and outputs signal to instrument cluster. Instrument cluster converts signal to a more precise waveform and outputs signal to ECM. ECM determines vehicle speed based on frequency of these pulse signals. DTC is set when ECM does not detect any VSS signal while vehicle is in motion. Possible causes are: Faulty wheel speed sensors.
