1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . 2. Disconnect fuel charging wiring (9D930) from distributor stator (12A112) (camshaft position sensor). 3. Remove stator camshaft position sensor retaining screws and distributor stator (camshaft position sensor) from camshaft position sensor housing. 4. If removing camshaft position sensor housing from the engine front cover (6019) , proceed with Removal Step 5. If camshaft position sensor housing is not being removed, proceed to Installation Step 6. 5. CAUTION: Before proceeding with this procedure, set cylinder No. 1 to 26 degrees After Top Dead Center (ATDC) of the compression stroke. Then note the position of the stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector. The installation procedure requires that the connector be located in the same position. Remove retaining bolt and hold-down clamp (12270) . 6. NOTE: The oil pump intermediate shaft (6A618) should be removed with the camshaft position sensor housing. Remove camshaft position sensor housing from engine front cover . Installation 1. CAUTION: If the replacement distributor stator (camshaft position sensor) does not contain a plastic locator cover tool, a special service tool such as Syncro Positioning Tool T89P-12200-A must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement distributor stator (camshaft position sensor). Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper stator (camshaft position sensor) alignment. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. If the plastic locator cover tool is not attached to the replacement distributor stator (camshaft position sensor), attach Syncro Positioning Tool T89P-12200-A as follows: a. Engage camshaft position sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool. b. Rotate tool on camshaft position sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in camshaft position sensor housing. The cover tool should be square and in contact with entire top surface of camshaft position sensor housing. 2. Transfer oil pump intermediate shaft from old camshaft position sensor housing to replacement camshaft position sensor housing. 3. CAUTION: If stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector is not positioned properly (for example, contacting the A/C compressor bracket), DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1. Install camshaft position sensor housing so that drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on locator tool is pointed approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise from the front face of the cylinder block (6010) . This step will locate stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector in the pre-removal position. 4. Install hold-down clamp and retaining bolt and tighten bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft). 5. Remove Syncro Positioning Tool T89P-12200-A. 6. CAUTION: If stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector is not positioned properly (for example, contacting the A/C compressor bracket), DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1. Install distributor stator (camshaft position sensor) and retaining screws. Tighten screws to 2.5-3.5 Nm (22-31 lb-in). 7. Connect fuel charging wiring connector to distributor stator (camshaft position sensor). 8. Connect battery ground cable .

CAUTION: Prior to removal of the camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) (12126) , set cylinder No.1 to zero degrees top dead center (TDC) of compression stroke. Then note the position of the camshaft position sensor electrical connector. The installation procedure requires the connector be located in the same position. Removal 1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01. 2. Disconnect fuel charging wiring connector from camshaft position sensor. 3. Remove camshaft position sensor retaining screws and camshaft position sensor from camshaft position sensor housing. 4. If removing camshaft position sensor housing from the cylinder block (6010), proceed with Removal Step 5. If not removing camshaft position sensor housing, proceed to Step 6 of the installation procedures. 5. Remove hold-down clamp (12270) (bolt and washer assembly). 6. NOTE: Remove the oil pump intermediate shaft (6A618) with the camshaft position sensor housing. Remove camshaft position sensor housing from cylinder block. Installation 1. CAUTION: If the replacement camshaft position sensor housing does not contain a plastic locator cover tool, a special service tool must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement camshaft position sensor. Engage camshaft position sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool. b. Rotate tool on camshaft position sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in camshaft position sensor housing. 2. Transfer oil pump intermediate shaft from old camshaft position sensor housing to replacement camshaft position sensor housing. 3. Install camshaft position sensor housing so drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on syncro positioning tool is pointed approximately as shown in the illustrations. This step will locate camshaft position sensor electrical connector in the pre-removal position. 4. Install hold-down clamp (washer and bolt assembly) and tighten bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft). 5. Remove syncro positioning tool. 6. CAUTION: If camshaft position sensor electrical connector is not positioned properly, DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1. Install camshaft position sensor and retaining screws. On 3.0L engine, tighten screws to 2.5-3.5 Nm (23-30 lb-in). On 3.8L engine, tighten screws to 4.5-7 Nm (40-61 lb-in). 7. Connect fuel charging wiring connector to camshaft position sensor. 8. Connect battery ground cable. Refer to Section 14-01. Camshaft Position Sensor—3.0L Engine

CAUTION: If the camshaft is renewed, the rocker arms must also be renewed. Inductively hardened camshafts must only be used with hard chrome-plated rocker arms (standard up to February 1989). Chilled cast camshafts may only be used with rocker arms with carbide metal coating (standard as from March 1989). If bearing fretting or severe scoring exists, the camshaft bearings can be drilled open by 0.5 mm (0.020 in) in the cylinder head or in the rocker arm bearing brackets and a camshaft with oversized bearing journals installed. After damage to a cam (e. g. worn cams), all the affected timing parts (hydraulic elements, valves, valve springs, valve plates and valve wedges) should be checked for signs of damage. If individual rocker arm bearing brackets are renewed, all the bearing brackets must be tightened to specification and the camshaft checked to ensure that it moves freely. REMOVAL Setting TDC 1. Set piston of No. 1 cylinder to TDC (arrow). 2. Remove front cover at the top, See: Timing Components/Timing Cover/Service and Repair 3. Remove chain tensioner, See: Timing Components/Timing Chain Tensioner 4. Mark position of camshaft gear relative to camshaft. This is done by applying colored marking next to the locating pin (20) on the camshaft gear. CAUTION: If the camshaft gear is renewed, the colored marking must be applied to the corresponding point on the new camshaft gear. The camshaft gear with 3 oblong holes (1st version) should be renewed if performing repairs with the camshaft gear 2nd version with 3 holes e 6 mm. The camshaft gear 2nd version can be used when performing repairs in place of the camshaft gear 3rd version with 3 7 mm holes. In this case the 3 holes should be widened from 6 mm to 7 mm. The timing can be set by turning or changing the side of the camshaft gear on the camshaft

NOTICE: Always turn the crankshaft clockwise. (c) Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pul- leys and No.3 timing belt cover are aligned. If not, turn the crankshaft pulley 1 revolution (360°). (d) Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt. IF REUSING TIMING BELT, CHECK INSTALLATION MARKS ON TIMING BELT Check that there are 3 installation marks and front mark on the timing belt. (a) REMOVE LH CAMSHAFT TIMING PULLEY Using SST, loosen the pulley bolt. SST 09960–10010 (09962–01000, 09963–01000) Remove the bolt, knock pin and timing pulley. (b) 23. REMOVE NO.2 IDLER PULLEY Remove the bolt and idler pulley. 24. REMOVE NO.1 IDLER PULLEY Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the pivot bolt, idler pulley and plate washer. 25. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT TIMING PULLEY Remove the timing pulley. HINT: If the pulley cannot be removed by hand, use SST and a service bolt to remove the timing pulley. SST 09950–50011 (09951–05010, 09952–05010, 09953–05020, 09954–05011)

CAUTION: The maximum amount by which the engine management system will adjust the camshaft timing (VCT control unit) is limited to 2 degrees. As a result of this an extremely high degree of accuracy is required for any work which affects the valve timing. NOTE: Steps which only apply to certain model variants and therefore do not apply to all vehicles are clearly marked. NOTE: The positions of the engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle towards the engine. 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 2. Loosen the front right-hand wheel nuts. 3. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 4. Remove the front right-hand wheel. 5. Lower the vehicle. 6. Remove the air cleaner resonator and air cleaner outlet pipe. 1. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector. 2. Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) electrical sensor. 3. Remove the one bolt and two nuts. 4. Release the retaining clips. 7. Disconnect the speed control cable. 1. Disconnect the cable from throttle valve. 2. Gently move the cable up and down and pull it out of the retaining bushing. 3. Press the retaining bushing out of the bracket. 8. Disconnect the throttle cable. 1. Remove the plastic clip. 2. Unhook the cable. 9. Remove the timing belt. For additional information, refer to Timing belt in this section. 10. Remove the camshaft pulleys. 1. Remove the blanking plug from the exhaust camshaft pulley. 2. Remove the exhaust camshaft pulley. 3. NOTE: Hold the camshaft by the hexagon with an open-ended wrench to stop it from turning. Remove the intake camshaft timing belt pulley. 11. Remove the bolts from the variable camshaft timing (VCT) oil feed flange. 12. NOTE: Working evenly in several stages, unscrew each bolt two turns at a time. NOTE: Loosen the bearing caps in the indicated sequence. Loosen the camshaft bearing caps. 13. NOTE: Loosening sequence. Remove the camshafts. 1. Remove the camshaft bearing caps. Remove the camshaft seals. 3. Remove the intake camshaft. 4. Remove the exhaust camshaft with the oil feed flange. Installation 1. NOTE: Use a thumb to press the locating pins of the gasket into the holes. Press a new gasket into the oil feed flange. 2. Prepare the exhaust camshaft for installation. 1. Insert the oil feed ring into the oil feed flange. 2. Slide both components together onto the exhaust camshaft.
