The supercharged 3800 engine uses two drive belts. The outer belt drives the supercharger. The inner belt drives the generator, power steering pump, coolant pump and air conditioning compressor. All driven accessories are rigidly mounted to the engine. Drive belt tension is maintained by the spring loaded belt tensioners. Each belt has its own tensioner. A belt squeak when the engine is started or stopped is normal and has no effect on belt durability. The drive belt tensioner can control belt tension over a broad range of belt lengths due to stretching. 1. Remove the battery. 2. Rotate the tensioner (2) counterclockwise to remove the drive belt (1). 3. Remove the supercharger belt (1) from the engine. 4. Rotate the tensioner (2) counterclockwise to remove the drive belt (1). 5. Remove the accessory belt (1) from the engine. Installation Procedure 1. Position the accessory drive belt (1) to the pulleys. 2. Rotate the tensioner (2) counterclockwise to install the drive belt (1). 3. Position the supercharger drive belt (1) to the pulleys. 4. Rotate the tensioner (2) counterclockwise to install the drive belt (1). 5. Install the battery.

While installing the tube and hose assembly, be sure to align white marks on each fitting. Pressure Hose and Tube 1. Remove the air intake hose assembly. 2. Detach the pressure hose mounting clamp. 3. Disconnect the pressure tube fitting at the gear box side. 2000 Hyundai Elantra GLS Wagon L4-2.0L 4. Lift up the vehicle and detach the mounting clamp which is holding both the pressure tube and the return tube. 5. Lift down the vehicle and remove the connector (24 mm). 6. Remove the pressure hose and tube assembly. 7. Installation is the reverse order of removal. NOTE: 1. Install the pressure hose and tube so that they are not twisted and they do not come in contact with any other parts. 2. After installation, bleed the system. Return Tube and Hose 1. Detach the power steering fluid reservoir from its mounting bracket. 2. Remove the engine coolant reservoir. 2000 Hyundai Elantra GLS Wagon L4-2.0L 3. Detach the return tube and hose assembly mounting clamps. 4. Remove the air intake hose assembly. 5. Disconnect the pressure tube and the return tube fittings at the gear box side. 6. Lift up the vehicle and detach the mounting clamp which is holding both the pressure tube and the return tube. 7. Lift down the vehicle and disconnect the clamp holding the return tube & hose assembly (G) and (C). 2000 Hyundai Elantra GLS Wagon L4-2.0L 8. Remove the return tube & hose assembly (G). 9. Detach the air conditioning discharge hose mounting clamp. 10. Disconnect the clamp holding the return tube & hose assembly (C) and the oil cooler tube. 11. Remove the return tube & hose assembly (C). 12. Installation is the reverse order of removal. NOTE: 1. Install the return tube and hose assembly so that it is not twisted and it does not come in contact with any other parts. 2. After installation, bleed the system. Oil Cooler Tube 1. Remove the front bumper and rail assembly. (Refer to Body and Frame.) 2. Disconnect the connection of the oil cooler tube from the return tube. 3. Drive Belt, Serpentine NOTE: Minor cracks in the V-grooved portion of the serpentine drive belt are considered normal and acceptable. If the drive belt (8620) has chunks missing from the ribs, the drive belt should be replaced. NOTE: When installing drive belts on pulley, make sure that all V-grooves make proper contact with pulleys. Conditions requiring drive belt replacement are excessive wear, rib chunkout, severe glazing, frayed cords, etc. Replace any drive belt that exhibits any of these conditions. Removal 1. WARNING: USE CAUTION WHEN REMOVING OR INSTALLING DRIVE BELT TO MAKE SURE THAT TOOL DOES NOT SLIP. Using a 15 mm socket or wrench on bolt, attach drive belt tensioner pulley. Rotate drive belt tensioner (6B209) clockwise to remove drive belt from pulleys. Pulley Routing, Accessory Drive Belt — 3.8L Engine Installation 1. Install drive belt over all pulleys (except drive belt tensioner). 2. Rotate drive belt tensioner as described under Removal to install drive belt over drive belt tensioner pulley. Make sure that all V-grooves make proper contact with pulleys.

To ensure maximum drive belt life and proper component operation, replacement drive belts (8620) must be the same type and size as the original drive belts . When installing a new drive belt , ensure that it is properly seated on the pulleys. NOTE: Mark the direction of rotation on the drive belt with a marking pen to ensure correct installation if the drive belt is to be reused. Failure to do so may result in drive belt noise. Drive Belt, A/C Compressor Removal 1. Loosen the A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley tensioner bolt. 2. Loosen the A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley adjustment bolt. 3. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt from the A/C compressor clutch pulley (2E884) , A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley and the crankshaft pulley (6312) . Installation 1. Inspect the pulleys for warping or abnormal wear. Replace any damaged pulley. To replace the A/C compressor clutch pulley , refer to Section 12-03B. To replace crankshaft pulley , refer to Section 03-01. 2. Install the A/C compressor drive belt on the A/C compressor clutch pulley , A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley, and crankshaft pulley . 3. Adjust the A/C compressor drive belt tension. Refer to the procedure in this section. 4. Tighten the A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley tensioner bolt securely. Drive Belt, Generator Removal 1. Raise and support the vehicle. 2. Remove the RH engine and transmission splash shield (6775) . 3. Loosen the inner and outer generator-to-generator regulator mounting bracket bolts. 4. Loosen the generator locking bolt.

TIMING BELT Removal
1. Remove all drive belts and drive pulleys from crankshaft and water pump. Remove generator bolt, if necessary. Remove crankshaft pulley and water pump pulley. 2. Remove timing belt covers and gaskets, noting bolt lengths and locations. DO NOT rotate engine counterclockwise, as viewed from timing belt side of engine. Remove timing belt tensioner pulley. 3. Rotate engine clockwise to align all timing marks so No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. See Fig. 1 . If reusing belt, place mark on timing belt to indicate direction of belt rotation. Remove belt. CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. NOTE: On some models, engine is equipped with a timing belt and timing chain. Inspect timing chain when replacing timing belt.
