1998 Dodge Durango Air Bag Service and Repair REMOVAL

Driver Side 1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. If the airbag has not been deployed, wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service. Driver Side Airbag Module Remove/Install 2. From the underside of the steering wheel, remove the two screws that secure the driver side airbag module to the steering wheel. 3. Pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel far enough to access the wire harness connectors on the back of the airbag module. 4. Unplug the airbag module and horn switch wire harness connectors from the back of the airbag module. 5. Remove the driver side airbag module from the steering wheel. 6. If the airbag has been deployed, the clockspring must be replaced. See Clockspring in the Replacement for the procedures. 7. When installing the airbag module, connect the clockspring wire harness connector to the module by pressing straight in on the connector. Be certain that the connector is fully engaged by observing the latch arms on each side of the connector. When these arms move outward from the connector, the connector is latched. 8. Connect the horn switch wire harness connectors. 9. Install the airbag module in the steering wheel. Tighten the mounting screws to 10.2 N.m (90 in. lbs.) . 10. Do not connect the battery negative cable at this time. See Airbag System in the Diagnosis and Testing for the proper procedures. Passenger Side The following procedure is for replacement of a faulty or damaged passenger side airbag module. If the passenger side airbag module has been deployed, the instrument panel assembly must be replaced. The instrument panel assembly includes a passenger side airbag and airbag door. Refer to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators/Instrument Panel/Instrument Panel Assembly Replacement. 1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. While installing the tube and hose assembly, be sure to align white marks on each fitting. Pressure Hose and Tube 1. Remove the air intake hose assembly. 2. Detach the pressure hose mounting clamp. 3. Disconnect the pressure tube fitting at the gear box side. 2000 Hyundai Elantra GLS Wagon L4-2.0L 4. Lift up the vehicle and detach the mounting clamp which is holding both the pressure tube and the return tube. 5. Lift down the vehicle and remove the connector (24 mm). 6. Remove the pressure hose and tube assembly. 7. Installation is the reverse order of removal. NOTE: 1. Install the pressure hose and tube so that they are not twisted and they do not come in contact with any other parts. 2. After installation, bleed the system. Return Tube and Hose 1. Detach the return tube and hose assembly mounting clamps. 4. Remove the air intake hose assembly. 5. Disconnect the pressure tube and the return tube fittings at the gear box side. 6. Lift up the vehicle and detach the mounting clamp which is holding both the pressure tube and the return tube. 7. Lift down the vehicle and disconnect the clamp holding the return tube & hose assembly (G) and (C). 2000 Hyundai Elantra GLS Wagon L4-2.0L 8. Remove the return tube & hose assembly (G). 9. Detach the air conditioning discharge hose mounting clamp. 10. Disconnect the clamp holding the return tube & hose assembly (C) and the oil cooler tube. 11. Remove the return tube & hose assembly (C). 12. Installation is the reverse order of removal. NOTE: 1. Install the return tube and hose assembly so that it is not twisted and it does not come in contact with any other parts. 2. After installation, bleed the system. Oil Cooler Tube 1. Remove the front bumper and rail assembly. (Refer to Body and Frame.) 2. Disconnect the connection of the oil cooler tube from the return tube. 3. Disconnect the connection of the coil cooler tube from the return hose of the fluid reservoir.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-00. 2. If servicing the radiator, drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section. 3. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustrations and tables. 4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. If servicing the radiator, fill the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section. Item 9: Lower Degas Bottle Hose Removal Note 1. Remove the lower degas bottle hose from the clip on the radiator lower fan shroud. Item 10: A/C Tube Removal Note 1. On 4.6L engines, detach the A/C tube from the retainers. Item 11: Transmission Cooler and A/C Tubes Removal Note 1. Disconnect the transmission cooler tubes. Remove the safety retainers from the transmission cooler tubes. Using the special tool, disconnect the quick coupler. If equipped, loosen and remove the screw clamp from the hose. 2. Remove the A/C tube brackets from the engine front cover. Item 12: Radiator Fan Shroud Screw Removal Note 1. Not all vehicles will have these radiator fan shroud screws. If vehicle is equipped with these screws, please discard them. Item 15: Cooling Fan Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Cardboard must be placed against the radiator when removing the cooling fan. Failure to follow these procedures can result in damage to the vehicle. Place a piece of cardboard against the radiator to prevent damage while removing the cooling fan. 2. Using the special tools, remove the fan blade and the clutch assembly. Item 17: Radiator Lower Fan Shroud Removal Note 1. Remove the power steering tube from the clip on the radiator lower fan shroud. Item 19: Radiator Bracket Bolt Removal Note 1. If necessary, remove the radiator brackets. Item 21: A/C Condenser Support Bracket Bolt Removal Note 1. If necessary, remove the condenser brackets. Item 22: Radiator Removal Note 1. NOTE: It will be necessary to lift the radiator assembly up off the mounts and set it on the frame in order to separate the A/C condenser from the radiator. NOTE: RH side shown, LH side similar. Remove the radiator up off the mounts and set it on the frame. 2. Remove the left inner air deflector from the A/C condenser. 3. Remove the right inner air deflector from the A/C condenser.

NOTE: The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged driver airbag. If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for handling non-deployed supplemental restraints. If the driver airbag has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for service after a supplemental restraint deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. 1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service. 2. From the underside of the steering wheel, remove the two screws (3) that secure the driver airbag (1) to the steering wheel armature (2). CAUTION: Do not pull on the horn switch feed pigtail wire to disengage the connector from the driver airbag housing or to disconnect the horn switch to steering wheel wire harness connection. Improper pulling on this pigtail wire or connection can result in damage to the horn switch membrane or feed circuit. 3. Pull the driver airbag (1) away from the steering wheel far enough to access the three electrical connections on the back of the airbag housing. 4. Disconnect the steering wheel wire harness connector for the horn switch (2) from the horn switch feed pigtail wire connector (4), which is located on the back of the driver airbag housing.
