CAUTION: To prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Do Not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit. Service of the PCM should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or a Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM) change. If the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, the engine calibrator (PROM) and PCM should be checked first to see if they are the correct parts. If they are remove the PROM from the faulty PCM and install it in the new service PCM. THE SERVICE PCM WILL NOT CONTAIN A PROM. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 51 indicates the PROM is installed improperly or has malfunctioned. When DTC 51 is obtained, check the PROM installation for bent pins or pins not fully seated in the socket. If the PROM is installed correctly and DTC 51 still shows, replace the PROM. Important: When replacing the production PCM with a service PCM (controller), it is important to transfer the Broadcast code and production PCM number to the service PCM label. Please do not record on PCM cover. This will allow positive identification of PCM parts throughout the service life of the vehicle. CAUTION: To prevent internal PCM damage, the ignition must be “OFF” when disconnecting or reconnecting power to PCM (for example, battery cable, PCM pigtail, PCM fuse, jumper cables, etc.). REMOVE OR DISCONNECT 1. Negative battery cable. 2. Right side sound insulator. 3. Vacuum center. 4. Connectors to PCM. 5. PCM. 6. PROM access cover. 7. PROM from PCM. INSTALL OR CONNECT 1. PROM to PCM. 2. PROM access cover. 3. PCM. 4. Connectors to PCM. 5. Vacuum center. 6. Right side sound insulator. 7. Negative battery cable.

The camshaft position PCM input is produced by the ignition control module. The ICM produces the camshaft position PCM input by filtering the camshaft position (CMP) sensor pulses when the engine is running and CKP sync pulses are also being received. The PCM uses the camshaft position PCM input pulses to initiate sequential fuel injection and to determine crankshaft position for the misfire diagnostic. The PCM constantly monitors the number of pulses on the camshaft position PCM input circuit and compares the number of camshaft position PCM input pulses to the number of 18X reference pulses and the number of 3X reference pulses being received. If the PCM receives an incorrect number of pulses on the camshaft position PCM input circuit, DTC P0341 will set and the PCM will initiate injector sequence without the camshaft position PCM input with a one in six chance that injector sequence is correct. The engine will continue to start and run normally, although the misfire diagnostic will be disabled. Conditions for Setting the DTC • The engine is running (3X reference pulses are being received). • The ratio of 3X reference pulses to Cam pulses received by the PCM does not equal 6. • The ratio of 3X reference pulses to 18X reference pulses received by the PCM equals 6. • The above conditions are present for 600 engine revolutions. Action Taken When the DTC Sets • The PCM will illuminate the MIL during the second consecutive trip cycle in which the diagnostic test has been run and failed. • The PCM will initiate injector sequence without the camshaft position signal with a one in six chance that injector sequence is correct. • If equipped with traction control, the PCM will command the EBTCM via serial data (CKT 800) to set an ABS/TCS DTC, the EBTCM will turn OFF traction control, and the EBTCM will illuminate the TRACTION OFF lamp. • The PCM will store conditions which were present when the DTC set as Freeze Frame and Fail Records data.

ISSUE Some 2001-2005 Taurus/Sable, 2001-2006 Escape and 2005-2006 Mariner vehicles built prior to
1-17-2006 equipped with the 3.0L 4V Duratec engine may exhibit a ticking noise from the left bank cylinder head, with the engine at normal operating temperature only.
ACTION To diagnose, with the engine running and warm (normal operation temperature), using a mechanic’s stethoscope determine if the ticking noise is coming from the left hand intake camshaft at cylinder number 6, (Figure 1). If the ticking noise can be verified, refer to the following Service Procedure.

1. The PCM is located between driver’s side front fender and power distribution center, near battery. See Fig. 1 . Disconnect negative battery cable and then positive battery cable from battery. 2. Remove bolts on side of power distribution center that secure power distribution center to mounting bracket. Remove heat shield from outside of battery. Remove battery. 3. Rotate power distribution center toward the engine to disengage power distribution center from rear mounting bracket. Pull power distribution center toward rear of vehicle to disengage power distribution center from front mounting bracket. 4. Allow power distribution center to lay aside for access to PCM. Remove electrical connectors from PCM. Electrical connectors may be removed by squeezing tabs on electrical connector together and pulling electrical connector from PCM. Remove bolts and PCM. To install, reverse removal procedure.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-00. 2. If servicing the radiator lower fan shroud or the radiator, drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section. 3. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustrations and tables. To remove individual parts, only carry out the listed steps: 4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. If servicing the radiator lower fan shroud or the radiator, fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section. Item 9: Lower Degas Bottle Hose Removal Note 1. Remove the lower degas bottle hose from the clip on the radiator lower fan shroud. Item 10: A/C Tube Removal Note 1. On 4.6L engines, detach the A/C tube from the retainers. Item 11: Transmission Cooler and A/C Tubes Removal Note 1. Disconnect the transmission cooler tubes. Remove the safety retainers from the transmission cooler tubes. Using the special tool, disconnect the quick coupler. If equipped, loosen and remove the screw clamp from the hose. 2. Remove the A/C tube brackets from the engine front cover. Item 12: Radiator Fan Shroud Screw Removal Note 1. Not all vehicles will have these radiator fan shroud screws. If vehicle is equipped with these screws, please discard them. Item 15: Cooling Fan Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Cardboard must be placed against the radiator when removing the cooling fan. Failure to follow these procedures can result in damage to the vehicle. Place a piece of cardboard against the radiator to prevent damage while removing the cooling fan. 2. Using the special tools, remove the fan blade and the clutch assembly. Item 17: Radiator Lower Fan Shroud Removal Note 1. Remove the power steering tube from the clip on the radiator lower fan shroud. Item 19: Radiator Bracket Bolt Removal Note 1. If necessary, remove the radiator brackets. Item 21: A/C Condenser Support Bracket Bolt Removal Note 1. If necessary, remove the condenser brackets. Item 22: Radiator Removal Note 1. NOTE: It will be necessary to lift the radiator assembly up off the mounts and set it on the frame in order to separate the A/C condenser from the radiator. NOTE: RH side shown, LH side similar. Remove the radiator up off the mounts and set it on the frame. 2. Remove the left inner air deflector from the A/C condenser.
