2001 Ford Expedition Front Door Panel: Service and Repair REMOVAL

1. Remove the sail panel. NOTE: Release the top portion first. 2. Remove the window regulator switch plate. 3. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 4. Remove the top door trim panel screw. 2001 Ford Truck Expedition 2WD V8-4.6L SOHC VIN W 5. Remove the door trim panel screw at the window regulator switch plate opening. 6. Remove the door trim panel screw in the courtesy lamp housing. 1 Remove the courtesy lamp lens. 2 Remove the screw. 7. Release the inside door handle trim cover. ^ Pull the inside door handle outward. ^ Release the trim cover. 8. Remove the inside door handle. ^ Remove the bolt.9. Lift upward and then outward to remove the front door trim panel. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the front door trim panel, do not pull directly outward. 10. Remove the courtesy lamp. ^ Turn the courtesy lamp bulb socket one-quarter of a turn and remove. 11. Disconnect the power mirror electrical connector. INSTALLATION

All vehicles 1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. 2. If the vehicle is equipped with an inline transmission fluid filter, remove and discard the filter. Vehicles Equipped With A Fluid Pan Drain Plug 3. Remove the drain plug and allow the fluid to drain. 4. NOTE: Do not discard the gasket unless damaged. This is a reusable gasket. Remove the transmission fluid pan and the gasket. Vehicles Not Equipped With A Fluid Pan Drain Plug 2001 Ford Truck Expedition 4WD V8-5.4L SOHC VIN L 5. NOTE: Do not discard the fluid pan gasket unless damaged. This is a reusable gasket. Remove the transmission fluid pan and gasket. 1 Loosen, but do not remove the bolts. 2 Remove the front and side bolts. 3 Lower the front of the fluid pan and allow the fluid to drain. 4 Remove the remaining fluid pan bolts and the fluid pan. All vehicles 6. CAUTION: When installing a new transmission fluid filter and seal assembly, the torque converter should be drained. Transmission cooler, cooler lines, and cooler bypass valve must be thoroughly flushed to remove any contamination. NOTE: After removal, discard the filter and seal assembly. Remove the filter and seal assembly by carefully pulling and rotating the filter as necessary. 7. CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch or damage the aluminum bore. The new seal may leak and damage to the case will result. If the seal remains in the pump bore, remove it carefully with a small screwdriver so as not to scratch or damage the aluminum bore.

2001 Ford Expedition Lower Ball Joint Removal and Installation

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04. 3. CAUTION: Do not allow the disc brake caliper to hang suspended from the brake hose. Provide a suitable support. Remove the caliper support bracket bolts, then position the caliper support bracket and brake caliper aside. 4. Disconnect the front anti-lock brake sensor (ABS) wire assembly. Disconnect the ABS electrical connector. Unclip the ABS harness routing clips. 5. Remove the tie-rod castellated nut. 1. Remove and discard the cotter pin. 2. Remove and discard the castellated nut. 6. CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the tie-rod from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle will result. CAUTION: Do not damage the tie-rod boot when installing the special tool. Using the special tool, separate the tie-rod end from the front wheel knuckle. 7. Using a suitable jack, support the front suspension lower arm. 8. Remove the lower ball joint castellated nut. 1. Remove and discard the cotter pin. 2. Remove and discard the castellated nut. 9. Using the special tool, separate the front wheel knuckle from the suspension lower arm. Then, loosely reinstall the castellated nut. 10. Remove the upper ball joint castellated nut. 1. Remove and discard the cotter pin. 2. Remove and discard the castellated nut. 11. CAUTION: Do not damage the ball joint boot when installing the special tool. Using the special tool, separate the front wheel knuckle from the front suspension upper arm. 12. Remove the hand-tightened lower ball joint castellated nut, then remove the front wheel knuckle. 13. Remove the snap ring from the ball joint. Discard the snap ring. 14. Using a suitable tool, remove the ball joint.

If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00. 1. Drain the radiator. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03. 2. Remove the instrument panel. For additional information, refer to Section 501-12. 3. If equipped with the 5.4L 4V engine, remove the junction block splash shield. 4. If equipped with the 5.4L 4V engine, remove the bolts and disconnect the cable ends from the starter relay. 5. If equipped with the 5.4L 4V engine, remove the junction block bracket. 1. Disengage the wire harness connector. 2. Remove the bolts. 3. Remove the junction block bracket. 6. Disconnect the heater core hose couplings. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00. 7. Remove the A/C plenum demister adapter. 1. Remove the screw. 2. Remove the A/C plenum demister adapter. 8. Disconnect the vacuum line.

2001 Ford Windstar Automatic Transaxle/ Transmission Main Control Pump Removal Installation

1. Place the transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position. 2. Remove the engine air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12. 3. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 4. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 1. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector. 2. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector. 3. Disconnect the wire harness from the bracket. 5. Remove the wiper arm and pivot assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 501-16.6. Remove the front upper radiator shield. 7. Install the special tool. 8. Install the special tool. 9. Install the special tools. 10. Install the special tool. 11. Remove the upper main control cover bolts. 12. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 13. Remove the LH wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04. 14. Remove the LH transaxle support and insulator. For additional information, refer to Transaxle Support Insulator in this section. 15. Position a drain pan under the transaxle side pan. 16. NOTE: It will be necessary to lower the left side of the subframe to remove the main control cover through the wheel well. Remove the remaining bolts, and remove the main control cover. 17. CAUTION: Do not pull on the wires or the electrical connectors. Damage to the connectors will result. Lift the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connectors. 18. Position the transaxle wiring harness out of the way. 19. CAUTION: Do not remove the two bolts that hold the pump assembly and main control valve body together as the pump assembly may fall from the main control valve body and become damaged. CAUTION: Only four of the six bolts need to be removed. Remove the bolts. Note the size and location of the bolts. 20. Disconnect the manual linkage. 21. Remove the main pump assembly and the main control valve body by carefully sliding it off the pump shaft. Installation 1. Install the pump assembly and main control valve body onto the pump shaft. 2. Rotate the pump assembly and main control valve body to connect the manual valve link with the manual valve. 3. CAUTION: Do not use the bolts to draw pump assembly and main control valve body onto the chain cover case. Component damage may occur. Using the Valve Body Aligner, install the pump assembly and main control valve body. Install the retaining bolt. 4. Install the transaxle wire harness and retaining clip into the separator plate. 5. Connect the electrical connectors.
