1995 Ford Contour Hoses Pressure and Return REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Removal 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Disconnect power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector. 3. Remove power steering pressure (PSP) switch from power steering pressure hose. 4. On 2.0L engine, remove one nut, two bolts and disconnect power steering pressure hose from power steering pump bracket and engine lifting bracket. 5. On 2.5L engine, remove one bolt and disconnect power steering pressure hose from front engine support insulator. 6. Remove power steering pump auxiliary reservoir as outlined. 7. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02. 8. Remove front sub-frame. Refer to Section 02-01. 9. Remove six bolts and steering gear cover plate from front sub-frame. 10. Disconnect power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose unions from steering gear. 11. Remove two bolts retaining power steering pressure and return hoses to front sub-frame and remove power steering pressure and return hoses. CAUTION: Whenever the power steering pressure and return hoses and/or steering gear are disconnected, the power steering pressure and return hoses and/or steering gear should be plugged to prevent system contamination. If the power steering system becomes contaminated with dirt or other foreign matter, power steering pump and/or steering gear failure may result. Installation 1. Position power steering pressure and return hoses to front sub-frame and secure with two bolts. Tighten bolts to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). 2. Connect power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose unions to steering gear. Tighten unions to 31 Nm (23 lb-ft). 3. Install steering gear cover plate and secure with six bolts. Tighten bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft). 4. Install front sub-frame. Refer to Section 02-01. 5. Lower vehicle. 6. Install power steering pump auxiliary reservoir as outlined. 7. On 2.5L engine, connect power steering pressure hose to front engine suppor t insulator and secure with one bolt. Tighten bolt to 6 Nm (53 lb-in). 8. On 2.0L engine, connect power steering pressure hose to power steering pump bracket and engine lifting bracket. Secure with one nut and two bolts. Tighten nut and bolts to 6 Nm (53 lb-in). 9. Install power steering pressure (PSP) switch into power steering pressure hose. 10. Connect power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector. 11. Connect battery ground cable. 12. Refill power steering fluid as necessary and bleed system. Refer to Section 11-00. Hose Fittings, Pressure and Return Line at Steering Gear and Pump

SUBJECT: MODELS: Loss of Power Steering Assist – Replace Electric Power Steering Motor 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt 2005 Pontiac Pursuit 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 2006 Pontiac G5 Pursuit 2007-2010 Pontiac G5 Equipped with Electric Power Steering 2005-2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles; 2005 model year Pontiac Pursuit; 2005-2006 model year Pontiac G4; 2006 model year Pontiac G5 Pursuit; and 2007-2010 model year Pontiac G5 vehicles equipped with electric power steering. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which a sudden loss of power steering assist could occur at any time while driving the vehicle. If the power steering assist is lost, a chime will sound and a “Power Steering” message will be displayed in the Driver Information Center to inform the driver of the condition. Steering control will be maintained, as the vehicle defaults to a manual steering mode. If power steering assist is lost, it may require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds, for example, below 15 mph (25 km/h). Unless a driver compensates for this additional effort, it may increase the risk of a crash. Typically, the next time the vehicle is started, the power steering assist will return and the “Power Steering” message will no longer be displayed. EPS Motor Replacement Procedure Note: The use of Loctite is no longer required. Loctite should not be used for any further applications. 1. Connect the Tech 2® to the vehicle and check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). 2. Record any present DTCs on the repair order and during claim submission. 3. Clear any DTCs that are present. 4. Remove the power steering assist motor. Refer to Power Steering Assist Motor Replacement in SI. Note: For 2005 model year vehicles only: Do NOT install the o-ring between the motor assembly and the steering column assembly. The new service motor kit will include an o- ring, but DO NOT install the o-ring for 2005 model year vehicles only. 5. Install the new power steering assist motor. Refer to Power Steering Assist Motor Replacement in SI. 6. Perform Test Drive.

1. Open hood. 2. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01. 3. From inside vehicle, remove nuts retaining steering column tube boot (3C611) to cowl panel. 4. Remove bolt retaining steering column intermediate shaft coupling (3A525) to steering column lower yoke (3N725) . 5. Position steering column tube boot out of the way. Remove pinch bolt retaining steering column intermediate shaft coupling to power rack and pinion steering gear and remove steering column intermediate shaft coupling . 6. Raise vehicle on a twin post hoist and remove front wheel and tire assemblies. 7. Remove exhaust system flex tube-to-dual converter Y-pipe attachment. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor wiring harness. Remove dual converter Y pipe (5F250) from vehicle. Dual Converter Y Pipe Removal 8. Support vehicle with jack stands under rear edge of front sub-frame (5C145). 9. Remove tie rod cotter pins and nuts, and remove tie rod end (3A130) from RH front wheel knuckle (3K185) and LH front wheel knuckle (3K186). 10. Remove tie rod end from front wheel spindle tie rod (3280) . Mark position of jam nut to maintain alignment. 11. Remove nuts from steering gear-to-front sub-frame retaining bolts. 12. Remove rear sub-frame-to-body retaining bolts. 13. Raise twin post hoist carefully until rear sub-frame (5R003) separates from body approximately 102 mm (4 inches). 14. Remove heat shield push-pin retainers from power steering hose bracket (3C510). Remove steering shaft U-joint shield (3F540). 15. Remove screw and power steering left turn pressure hose (3A714) from power steering hose bracket . Remove two screws and power steering hose bracket. 16. Remove LH stabilizer bar link (5K484). 17. Disconnect power steering pressure switch electrical connector. 18. Rotate power rack and pinion steering gear to clear bolts from front sub-frame and pull left to ease line fitting removal. 19. Place a drain pan under vehicle and remove hydraulic power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose from fittings on power rack and pinion steering gear. 20. Remove power rack and pinion steering gear assembly through LH wheel well. Installation 1. Install new Teflon® O-rings on both line connector assemblies as described under Quick Connect Power Steering Fitting—Seal Replacement. 2. Place steering gear retaining bolts in steering gear housing (3548). 3. Install power rack and pinion steering gear through LH wheel well. 4. Install power steering hose bracket and two screws. Tighten to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb-in). 5. Install hydraulic power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose to fittings on power rack and pinion steering gear. Tighten hoses to 33-41 Nm (25-30 lb-ft). 6. Install power steering pressure hose and and screw. Tighten to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb-in). 7. Connect power steering pressure switch electrical connector. 8. Position power rack and pinion steering gear into front sub-frame. 9. Install tie rod ends onto front wheel spindle tie rods . 10. Install push-pin retainers at top of heat shield. 11. Install tie rod end to RHfront wheel knuckle and LH front wheel knuckle. Install nuts and tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 lb-ft). Install new cotter pins. 12. Install LH stabilizer bar link. Tighten to 76.5-103.5 Nm (57-76 lb-ft).

Power Steering System Squeaking Noise Repair Procedure AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE CONDITION SUMMARY: POWER STEERING SYSTEM SQUEAKING NOISE Situation: On some S-Type, X-Type and XJ Range vehicles within the VIN ranges above, a squeaking noise may be apparent from the power assisted steering system when the steering wheel is rotated in either direction. The noise is caused by a seal inside the steering rack. The noise can be transmitted through the steering column and steering wheel, making it difficult to diagnose. This bulletin does not address any other PAS noises, such as pump or drive belt related noises. Action: In the case of a verified customer complaint matching the description above, refer to the Repair Procedure detailed in this bulletin and complete the service fix.REPAIR PROCEDURE PAS SQUEAK/FLUID ADDITIVE Open driver’s door. Ensure the gear lever is in either neutral or park, the parking brake is ‘ON’, and the ignition is ‘OFF’. Open hood and install fender protectors. 4. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap (and filter mesh on XJ and S-Type vehicles) and ensure the fluid level is correct. (Figure 1) 5. Using a suitable clean syringe, remove 50 ml of steering fluid. NOTE: The fluid additive must only be added once and the supplied label must then be affixed to the power steering fluid reservoir. 6. Replenish the power steering fluid reservoir with 50 ml of the specified fluid additive (C2S 48887). 7. Affix the supplied label to the power steering fluid reservoir NOTE: Suitable temperature reading equipment must be positioned into the power steering fluid reservoir, (filter mesh must be removed on XJ and S-Type vehicles) and that the temperature can be read while carrying out the heating process. 8. Insert the temperature reading equipment probe into the power steering fluid reservoir (about halfway into the depth of the fluid). HEATING THE STEERING FLUID TO 100°C +/- 5°C (212°F +/- 10°F) 1. Turn ignition ‘ON’ and start the engine. With the engine idling, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock four times to cycle the fluid additive into the system. (Figure 2) CAUTION: Under no circumstances hold the steering wheel on full lock while heating the steering fluid (to avoid damage to the steering system). CAUTION: While carrying out the following procedure, ensure that 105°C (221°F) is not exceeded. 3. While stationary and with the steering wheel in the center position (road wheels in the straight ahead position), turn the steering wheel 90° (quarter turn) right and hold firmly with both hands. (Figure 3) ^ Increase the engine speed to 3000 rpm. ^ Monitor the power steering fluid temperature until 100 +/- 5°C (212°F +/- 10°F) is reached. PERFORMING THE STEERING MANEUVER NOTE: The steering maneuver should be carried out on a hard flat surface outside of the workshop. CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel on full lock for more than two seconds as this may cause damage to the steering system. 1. Verify the power steering fluid temperature is at 100 +/- 5°C (212°F +/- 10°F), engine idle speed set between minimum 900 rpm and maximum 1000 rpm. 2. Turn the steering wheel to full lock and hold for two seconds.

WARNING: Begin fuel system trouble shooting and diagnosis with fuel system pressure test. Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting any components or installing fuel pressure gauge. TBI 1. Turn ignition off for 10 seconds. Turn ignition on, and listen at fuel tank for fuel pump operation. Pump should run 2 seconds (20 seconds on models with fuel module). If fuel pump runs, go to next step. If fuel pump does not run, go to step 7). 2. If fuel pump runs, turn ignition off. Verify fuel tank has fuel. Relieve fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF . Remove air cleaner, and plug air cleaner vacuum ports (if equipped). Disconnect fuel line between throttle body and fuel filter. Install Fuel Pressure Gauge (J-29658A) and Adapter (J- 2968A-85) between steel fuel line and flexible hose, ahead of in-line fuel filter. 3. Turn ignition on, and note reading on pressure gauge. If fuel pressure is 9-13 psi (.63-.91 kg/cm2 ), no problems exist. If pressure is less than 9 psi (.63 kg/cm2 ), go to step 5). If pressure is greater than 13 psi (.91 kg/cm2 ), turn ignition off, and bleed fuel pressure. Disconnect fuel return line downstream of pressure gauge. Insert return line into a gasoline container. 4. Turn ignition on. If pressure is now 9-13 psi (.63-.91 kg/cm2 ), correct restriction in fuel return line between disconnected point and fuel tank. If fuel pressure is greater than 13 psi (.91 kg/cm2 ), check for restricted return line (including fuel filter) downstream of pressure gauge. If no restrictions are present, replace fuel pressure regulator (TBI 700) or fuel meter cover/pressure regulator (TBI 220). 5. Check for restricted line between in-tank fuel pump and pressure regulator. If fuel line is okay, disconnect injector connector. Turn ignition on. Gradually pinch fuel pressure gauge outlet hose. Note pressure. CAUTION: DO NOT pinch off fuel return line completely. DO NOT allow fuel pressure build-up to exceed specification, as damage to fuel pressure regulator may occur. 6. If pressure is greater than 13 psi (.91 kg/cm2 ), replace fuel pressure regulator (TBI 700) or fuel meter cover/pressure regulator (TBI 220). If pressure is less than 9 psi (.63 kg/cm2 ), check for faulty fuel pump or incorrect part. Check fuel pump coupling hose and pump inlet filter in fuel tank. On models with dual fuel tanks, check for faulty fuel tank selector valve and meter switch.
