In cases such as the above, the cause is probably the air/fuel mixture or idle air control motor. Other systems affecting idle quality include the ignition system and compression. TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this case:) Malfunction of the ignition system. Malfunction of air/fuel ratio control system. Malfunction of the IAC system. Malfunction of the evaporative emission purge solenoid system. Poor compression pressure. Vacuum leak. Malfunction of the EGR solenoid system. STEP 1. Check if the battery terminal is disconnected. Q: Has the battery terminal been disconnected lately? YES: Start the engine and let it run at idle for approximate 10 minutes after engine warm up. Then, if a malfunction occurs, go to Step 2. NO: Go to Step 2. STEP 2. Using scan tool MB991502, read the diagnostic trouble code (DTC). CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB991502, always turn the ignition switch is to the “LOCK” (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool MB991502. 1. 2. 3. 4. Connect scan tool MB991502 to the data link connector. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position. Read the DTC. Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” (OFF) position. Q: Is the DTC is output? YES: Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart. NO: Go to Step 3. STEP 3. Check the engine idling state. Q: Is it hunting remarkably? YES: Go to Step 4. NO: Go to Step 5. STEP 4. Check the following items. 1. Carry out the following cleaning. a. Clean the throttle valve area. 2. After cleaning, confirm that the malfunction symptom is eliminated. Q: Is the malfunction symptom resolved?

The vehicle may also have a rough idle or reduced power condition, and/or may stall at an idle. This may be caused by sticking exhaust valves due to excessive carbon build-up. ACTION Check for faulty fuel injectors and ignition wires. One or more exhaust valves may be temporarily sticking due to carbon build-up between the valve stem and guide. If the diagnostic checks point to a sticking exhaust valve, the cylinder head assembly may need to be replaced with a new level cylinder head assembly with revised valve guides, revised exhaust valves will also need to be installed to help prevent carbon build-up. Tests/Procedures: 1. Check the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) powers and grounds. Powers are at pins #102, 103, 107 and 110. Grounds are pins 101 and 106. 2. Check the ECU control of the Multi-port Injection (MPI) relay. At start-up, the ECU grounds pins 56 and 63 3. If good, replace the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). NOTE: If DTC P1519 is stored at same time as DTC P0505, troubleshoot DTC P1519 first, then recheck for DTC P0505. 1. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm with no load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on. 2. Check the engine speed at idle with no-load conditions: headlights, blower fan, rear window defogger, radiator fan, and air conditioner off. Is the engine running at 730+/-50 rpm? YES – Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time.? NO – If the idle speed is less than 680 rpm, go to step 3; if it’s 780 rpm or higher, go to step 4. 3. Disconnect the idle air control (IAC) valve 3P connector. Does the engine speed increase or fluctuate? YES – Adjust the idle speed. If the idle will not adjust properly, clean the passage in the throttle body, and then adjust the idle.? NO – Replace the IAC valve.? 4. Turn the ignition switch OFF. 5. Remove the intake air duct from the throttle body. 6. Start the engine and let it idle. 7. Put your finger on the lower port (A) in the throttle body. Does the engine speed drop below 780 rpm? YES – Adjust the idle speed. If the idle will not adjust properly, replace the IAC valve, and then adjust the idle.? NO – With the throttle valve completely closed, check for vacuum leaks, and repair as necessary.?
