ISSUE Some 2002 Explorer/Mountaineer vehicles built prior to 3/4/2002 with 5R55W transmission, may exhibit no 3rd gear or slipping 2-3 shift with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0733 and P0745 present. This may be due to a broken intermediate band. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Loosen the intermediate band locknut on the band adjustment screw. 2. Using the special service tool (307-S022), tighten the suspect band adjustment screw to 10 lb-ft (14 N•m). a. If the band adjustment torque cannot be achieved, both bands will need to be replaced. Proceed to PROCEDURE “B”. b. If the proper torque is achieved, the band is OK and does not need to be replaced. Proceed to Step 3 of PROCEDURE “A”. 3. Lubricate the locknut seal with petroleum jelly prior to installation. a. Remove the band locknut and discard. b. Install a NEW band locknut. c. Using the special service tool (307-S022), tighten the band adjustment screw to 10 lb-ft (14 N•m). d. Back off the screw exactly two (2) turns and hold that position. e. Tighten the intermediate band locknut. f. Hold the band adjustment screw stationary. g. Tighten the band locknut to 40 lb-ft (54 N•m). h. Continue with normal diagnosis and repair for the condition as outlined in the Workshop Manual.

Disassembly (Ram-50) 1) Remove both 4WD indicator switches and steel balls. Remove speedometer gear assembly. Remove output shaft cover, gasket, wave spring and spacer. See Fig. 3. Remove rear cover, rear cover gasket and spacer from chain cover. Drive roll pin out of high-low shift fork. 2) Remove 2 seal plugs. Remove 2 poppet springs and steel balls. Shift transfer case to “4WD” and pull high-low shift rail out, in rear cover direction. Remove interlock plunger. Remove pulse generator (if equipped), front output shaft cover and pulse rotor (if equipped). Remove snap ring from rear bearing on output shaft. Remove chain cover, oil guide and side cover. Remove countershaft locking plate. Remove countershaft. 3) Remove countergear, 2 thrust washers, 2 needle bearings and spacer through side cover opening. Remove snap ring, spring retainers and spring from 2WD-4WD shift rail. Remove front output shaft, rear output shaft and chain as assembly. 4) Remove 2WD-4WD shift fork and distance piece. Drive out 2WD-4WD shift rail spring pin. Remove 2WD-4WD shift rail and lug. Remove high-low shift fork and high-low synchronizer sleeve. Remove needle bearing and snap ring from input gear. Remove input gear assembly. 5) If either control shaft or input gear oil seals are to be replaced, drive out roll pin from transmission control change shifter. Separate transfer case from adapter. See Fig. 3. Disassembly (Montero) 1) Remove dynamic damper, 5 detection switches and 3 steel balls. Remove poppet plug, spring and steel ball. Remove speedometer gear assembly. Remove output shaft rear cover, spacers, dust seal guard and oil seals. Front output shaft cover, wave spring and spacer (if equipped). 2) Remove high-low shift rail plug and high-low shift fork spring pin. Shift transfer case to “4WD”. Remove rear cover and high- low shift rail. Remove interlock plunger. Remove rear output shaft (viscous coupling) assembly and center differential assembly. Remove 2WD-4WD synchronizer assembly, chain and front output shaft from transmission as a unit. With White paint make match marks in grooves of 2WD-4WD synchronizer in 3 places. With White paint make match marks on spline projections of 2WD-4WD synchronizer sleeve in 3 places. Refer to match marks during reassembly. 3) Remove snap ring, spring seat, spring, 2WD-4WD shift fork and 2WD-4WD synchronizer sleeve. Remove differential lock hub, oil dam cover and bearing retainer. Remove side cover and gasket. Remove transfer counter gear shaft, transfer counter gear, thrust washer, needle bearings and spacer. Remove transfer drive shaft assembly. Remove high-low shift fork assembly and clutch sleeve. Remove transfer input gear assembly. 4) Remove 2WD-4WD shift lug spring pin, spring, spring retainer 2WD-4WD shift lug and shift rail. Remove input gear oil seal, baffle plate, dust seal guard and front output shaft oil seal. See Fig. 4.

1. Using suitable size allen wrench, remove the shift handle retaining screw (Fig. 251). 2. Remove shift handle from shifter assy. 3. Remove console bezel from vehicle. 5. Remove retaining clip from shift cable conduit bracket (Fig. 253). 6. Disconnect shifter cable from cable attach stud (pin) (Fig. 253). 7. Remove cable from center console routing. Leave flat on floor for ease of removal. 8. Raise hood. Remove gearshift cable from throttle/gearshift cable bracket (Fig. 254) 9. Unseat cable grommet at firewall and remove cable from interior of vehicle (Fig. 255). 10. Raise vehicle on hoist and disconnect fill tube bracket from transaxle. Rotate fill tube to gain access to shift cable clamp. 11. Remove cable from routing bracket (Fig. 256) 12. Remove cable-to-transaxle nut and slide cable off of stud (Fig. 255). 13. Disconnect shifter cable from shift lever assembly at transaxle (Fig. 255). 14. Remove cable from underneath vehicle. INSTALLATION 1. Make sure transaxle shift lever is in “Park.” This is the most rearward position. Verify park sprag is fully engaged by rotating either a tire or an axle shaft. 2. Position cable in vehicle and connect cable end to the transaxle shift lever (Fig. 255). 3. Verify that the washer (Fig. 255) is still in place on the cable mounting stud. Install cable to transaxle and tighten nut to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). 4. Rotate fill tube to original location. Install and tighten fill tube bracket bolt. 5. Install cable “push pin” into bracket as shown in (Fig. 254).

X1 CHECK THE IGNITION STATES Diagnostic Tool X2 RETRIEVE THE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES X3 VERIFY THE INOPERATIVE INDICATOR LAMP Monitor the PID IGN_GEM while turning the ignition switch through the START, RUN, OFF, and ACC positions. Do the PID values agree with the ignition switch positions? Yes GO to X2. No REFER to Section 417-02. Use the recorded results from the continuous and on-demand self-tests. Are any DTCs recorded? Yes If DTC B1342, GO to X17 . No GO to X3. If DTC P1804, GO to X3 . If DTC P1806, GO to X3 . If DTC P1808, GO to X3 . If DTC P1810, GO to X3 . Verify the inoperative indicator. Are the 4×4 HIGH or 4×4 LOW indicators inoperative? Yes GO to X6. No If the 4×4 LOW indicator is inoperative, GO to X12 . If the 4×4 HIGH indicator is inoperative, GO to X7 . If both the 4×4 HIGH and 4×4 LOW indicators are inoperative, GO to X4 . X4 CHECK THE O/D OFF INDICATOR Verify the O/D OFF indicator works. Does the O/D OFF indicator function correctly? Yes GO to X7. No GO to X5. X5 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE INDICATORS Instrument Cluster 220a Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster 220a pin 5, circuit 484 (OG/BK), harness side and ground.

TSB SB05-05-5004 Shift Lock Solenoid ISSUE DATE: MAY 2005 Affected Vehicles 2002-2004 Isuzu Axiom (UP) 1998-2004 Isuzu Rodeo (UE) and Rodeo Sport (UA) Service Information Use the following steps to remove and replace the Shift Lock Solenoid. Service Procedure 1. Access the Shift Lock Solenoid by removing the Center, Front, Rear Console Assemblies, Selector Lever Knob, and Cover Assembly. Refer to the Selector Lever section in the Service Manual. 2. Set parking brake, move Selector Lever to lowest gear, and remove the Shift Lock Cable. 3. Remove the two screws securing the Shift Lock Solenoid to the Selector Lever subassembly. Disconnect the Shift Lock Solenoid 2-pin connector. 4. Disconnect the 1-40 (Rodeo) or 1-3 (Axiom) six-pin connector and slide the female connector off bracket. Remove the Terminal Position Assurance (TPA) Lock from the connector. Locate the two blue wires in position 1 and 3 on the female connector. With appropriate tool (shown above), apply light pressure upward on the connector locking tab while gently pulling on the blue wire to release. Note :Never use force to remove a terminal from a connector. 5. Insert the two blues wires from the replacement Shift Lock Solenoid into the 1- 40 (Rodeo) or 1-3 (Axiom) female connector. It does not matter which blue wire is inserted into the 1 and 3 position. Gently tug the blue wires to make sure they are secure. NOTE :D iscard the extra 2-pin connector sub harness included with replacement Shift Lock Solenoid P/N 8-97181-068-2. 6. Reconnect the Shift Lock Solenoid 2-pin connector and reattach the two screws securing the Shift Lock Solenoid to the selector lever subassembly. 7. Reconnect the 1-40 (Rodeo) or 1-3 (Axiom) six-pin connector and slide the female connector onto the bracket. 8. Reinstall the Selector Lever Knob, Cover Assembly, Center, Front, and Rear Console Assemblies. Refer to the Selector Lever section in the Service Manual. 9. Check Shift Lock operation: a. With ignition key in “Lock” position, Selector lever should not move from “P” position. b. With ignition key in “ON” position and brake pedal depressed. Selector lever can be moved out of “P” position. c. Key can be removed only when turned to “LOCK” position and selector lever is in “P” position.
