SYMPTOM The engine does not start, and the immobilizer indicator is blinking (especially if the battery recently went dead and the engine was jump-started). PROBABLE CAUSE The immobilizer IMOES code has been erased. NOTE: This problem occurs only if all these conditions are met: • The security system is set. • The battery goes dead. • Battery power is connected to the vehicle, then disconnected in a very short period of time (milliseconds). If the vehicle meets these conditions, or if the condition is unknown, go to DIAGNOSIS. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the under-dash fuse/relay box (MICU). DIAGNOSIS NOTE: When the immobilizer system is not allowing the engine to start, the results vary depending on the model and how quickly the ignition key is turned. 2006 Civic 2-Door, 4-Door, Si, and GX • If you quickly turn the ignition switch from LOCK (0) to START (III), the engine starts and runs for about 1 second, then shuts off. • If you turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then pause before turning to START (III), the starter cranks, but the engine does not start. • When the ignition switch is returned to LOCK (0), the indicator blinks 10 times. 2006 Civic Hybrid • During moderate weather conditions, if you turn the ignition switch to START (III), the gauges and gauge indicators come on, but the engine does not crank. • During extremely cold conditions (about 0° F or lower) or a low IMA battery: – If you turn the ignition switch quickly from LOCK (0) to START (III), the starter motor, not the IMA motor, cranks the engine and it runs for about 1 second, then shuts off. – If you turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then pause before turning to START (III), the starter motor, not the IMA motor, cranks the engine but it does not start. • When the ignition switch is returned to LOCK (0), the indicator blinks 10 times.

SYMPTOM The vehicle may have one or more of these symptoms: • Idle fluctuates between 500 and 1,500 RPM (The fluctuation is more pronounced before the engine reaches normal operating temperature.) • Shudder or judder when accelerating from a stop or just before stopping • Surging at highway speeds between 2,000 and 3,000 RPM • Excessive shock when the engine is cold and you start to accelerate • A “coo” sound, lasting about 5 to 10 seconds, after coming to a stop PROBABLE CAUSE The problem may have one or more of these causes: • TCM control unit programming is too sensitive. • The start clutch assembly is worn. • The start clutch control valve is contaminated. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the start clutch assembly, the start clutch control valve, and the TCM.REPAIR PROCEDURE NOTE: Make sure the work surface and the CVT are completely clean. Use lint-free towels, and use a dedicated, clean solvent tank for cleaning the CVT parts. If you do not keep everything very clean, the repair may not be successful. 1. Soak the new start clutch assembly in Honda ATF-Z1 for at least 30 minutes. NEW START CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 2. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. See page 14-304 of the 1996–00 Civic Service Manual. 3. Cover with clean shop towels all of the openings in the transmission and anything else that might get damaged by water and cleaning chemicals (axle openings, breather, and electrical connectors). Clean all the dirt and grease off of the transmission before you start disassembly.

SYMPTOM *The transmission shifts harshly, or it may stay in first gear. The harsh shifting is more noticeable on the 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts under light throttle. It is not affected by operating temperature. The MIL may be on with DTC P0730 or P0715 stored.* PROBABLE CAUSE *Contamination of the linear solenoid and its associated passages inside the transmission, or a broken spring internal to the transmission.* *Flush the transmission with Genuine Honda ATF-Z1, then replace the linear solenoid. If shift feel is not affected, replace the transmission.* PARTS INFORMATION Linear Solenoid Assembly: P/N 28250-P4R-315, H/C 5317219 Drain Bolt Washer: P/N 90471-PX4-000, H/C 3300936 REQUIRED MATERIALS Genuine Honda ATF-Z1: P/N 08200-9001, H/C 6512628 Civic and 2WD CR-V – 11.6 quarts required 4WD CR-V – 12.4 quarts required

SYMPTOM DTC P1298 (electrical load detector (ELD) circuit high voltage) is stored in the ECM/PCM. PROBABLE CAUSE The electronic load detector (ELD) has a faulty solder joint. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the ELD. NOTE: Previously, if an ELD required replacement, you had to replace the under-hood fuse/relay box. To reduce repair costs, replacement ELDs are now available. PARTS INFORMATION Electronic Load Detector: P/N 38255-S5A-003, H/C 7987571 REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the audio unit. Write down the customer’s audio presets. 2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. 3. Remove the under-hood fuse/relay box cover. 4. Release the three clips, and remove the under- hood fuse/relay box from the holder. CR-V only: Release the wire harness clip from the fuse/relay box holder CIVIC: 7. Remove the four screws that hold the two fuses, and remove the fuses. FUSE (Retain.) CIVIC: 80A CR-V: 100A FUSE (Retain.) CIVIC: 40A CR-V: 50A 12. Reinstall the 3P ELD connector and the lower fuse/ relay box cover. 13. Reinstall the fuse/relay box onto its holder. CR-V only: Reinstall the wire harness clip onto the holder. 14. Reinstall the fuse/relay box cover. 15. Reconnect the negative battery cable. 16. Do the idle learn procedure: • Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off. • Start the engine and let it warm up to its normal operating temperature (the cooling fans cycle twice). • Let the engine idle (throttle closed and all electrical items off) for 10 minutes. 17. CR-V only: Reset the power window control unit: • Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). • Make sure the driver’s window is fully closed. • Push down and hold the window switch until the window goes all the way down. • Pull back and hold the window switch until the window goes all the way up, then hold the switch for at least 2 more seconds. 18. Enter the audio unit anti-theft code, and set the clock. Enter the audio presets.
