1991 Ford Thunderbird Crankshaft Position Sensor Service and Repair

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Disconnect the crankshaft sensor electrical connectors from the engine wiring harness. 3. Raise vehicle and support properly. 4. Remove the upper and lower damper shield assemblies. 5. Rotate the crankshaft by hand to position the metal vane of the shutter (attached to rear of the damper) outside of the sensor air gap. 6. Remove the crankshaft sensor retaining screws and remove the sensor. 7. Position the crankshaft sensor assembly on bracket. 8. Install the sensor retaining screws but DO NOT tighten them at this time. 9. Install the crankshaft sensor gauge (Ford part #T89P-6316-AH, or equivalent) to the outside surface of one vane of shutter. NOTE: Gauge is metallic and will conform to the shape of the vane. 10. Rotate the crankshaft by hand to align shutter vane with gauge into sensor air gap. 11. Push sensor housing inward to contact gauge and tighten retaining screws to 22-31 lbs. in. (2.5-3.5 N-m). CAUTION: This is a critical torque. Over tightening fasteners can cause damage to the timing sensor. 12. Rotate the crankshaft by hand to position shutter vane with gauge outside of air gap. Remove the magnetic gauge. 13. Install upper and lower damper shields and tighten fasteners. 14. Lower vehicle and route sensor wiring harness and connect both electrical connectors. 15. Connect the negative battery cable.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . 2. Disconnect fuel charging wiring (9D930) from distributor stator (12A112) (camshaft position sensor). 3. Remove stator camshaft position sensor retaining screws and distributor stator (camshaft position sensor) from camshaft position sensor housing. 4. If removing camshaft position sensor housing from the engine front cover (6019) , proceed with Removal Step 5. If camshaft position sensor housing is not being removed, proceed to Installation Step 6. 5. CAUTION: Before proceeding with this procedure, set cylinder No. 1 to 26 degrees After Top Dead Center (ATDC) of the compression stroke. Then note the position of the stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector. The installation procedure requires that the connector be located in the same position. Remove retaining bolt and hold-down clamp (12270) . 6. NOTE: The oil pump intermediate shaft (6A618) should be removed with the camshaft position sensor housing. Remove camshaft position sensor housing from engine front cover . Installation 1. CAUTION: If the replacement distributor stator (camshaft position sensor) does not contain a plastic locator cover tool, a special service tool such as Syncro Positioning Tool T89P-12200-A must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement distributor stator (camshaft position sensor). Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper stator (camshaft position sensor) alignment. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. If the plastic locator cover tool is not attached to the replacement distributor stator (camshaft position sensor), attach Syncro Positioning Tool T89P-12200-A as follows: a. Engage camshaft position sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool. b. Rotate tool on camshaft position sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in camshaft position sensor housing. The cover tool should be square and in contact with entire top surface of camshaft position sensor housing. 2. Transfer oil pump intermediate shaft from old camshaft position sensor housing to replacement camshaft position sensor housing. 3. CAUTION: If stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector is not positioned properly (for example, contacting the A/C compressor bracket), DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1. Install camshaft position sensor housing so that drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on locator tool is pointed approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise from the front face of the cylinder block (6010) . This step will locate stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector in the pre-removal position. 4. Install hold-down clamp and retaining bolt and tighten bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft). 5. Remove Syncro Positioning Tool T89P-12200-A. 6. CAUTION: If stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector is not positioned properly (for example, contacting the A/C compressor bracket), DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1. Install distributor stator (camshaft position sensor) and retaining screws. Tighten screws to 2.5-3.5 Nm (22-31 lb-in). 7. Connect fuel charging wiring connector to distributor stator (camshaft position sensor). 8. Connect battery ground cable .

CAUTION: Prior to removal of the camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) (12126) , set cylinder No.1 to zero degrees top dead center (TDC) of compression stroke. Then note the position of the camshaft position sensor electrical connector. The installation procedure requires the connector be located in the same position. Removal 1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01. 2. Disconnect fuel charging wiring connector from camshaft position sensor. 3. Remove camshaft position sensor retaining screws and camshaft position sensor from camshaft position sensor housing. 4. If removing camshaft position sensor housing from the cylinder block (6010), proceed with Removal Step 5. If not removing camshaft position sensor housing, proceed to Step 6 of the installation procedures. 5. Remove hold-down clamp (12270) (bolt and washer assembly). 6. NOTE: Remove the oil pump intermediate shaft (6A618) with the camshaft position sensor housing. Remove camshaft position sensor housing from cylinder block. Installation 1. CAUTION: If the replacement camshaft position sensor housing does not contain a plastic locator cover tool, a special service tool must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement camshaft position sensor. Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper camshaft position sensor alignment. This will result in the ignition fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. NOTE: For 3.0L engines, use Syncro Positioning Tool 303-589. For 3.8L engines, use Syncro Positioning Tool 303-562 (T96T-12200-A). If the plastic locator cover tool is not attached to the replacement camshaft position sensor housing, attach syncro positioning tool as follows: a. Engage camshaft position sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool. b. Rotate tool on camshaft position sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in camshaft position sensor housing. 2. Transfer oil pump intermediate shaft from old camshaft position sensor housing to replacement camshaft position sensor housing. 3. Install camshaft position sensor housing so drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on syncro positioning tool is pointed approximately as shown in the illustrations. This step will locate camshaft position sensor electrical connector in the pre-removal position. 4. Install hold-down clamp (washer and bolt assembly) and tighten bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft). 5. Remove syncro positioning tool. 6. CAUTION: If camshaft position sensor electrical connector is not positioned properly, DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1. Install camshaft position sensor and retaining screws. On 3.0L engine, tighten screws to 2.5-3.5 Nm (23-30 lb-in). On 3.8L engine, tighten screws to 4.5-7 Nm (40-61 lb-in). 7. Connect fuel charging wiring connector to camshaft position sensor. 8. Connect battery ground cable. Refer to Section 14-01. Camshaft Position Sensor—3.0L Engine

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The crankshaft position sensor, which detects the engine speed and crankshaft angle signal (NE signal), has been installed on the oil pump body. The NE signal plate has 34 teeth. The NE signal sensor generates 34 signals at every engine revolution. The ECM detects the standard crankshaft angle based on the G signal, and the actual crankshaft angle and the engine speed by the NE signal. DTC No.

Condition Some customers may comment on ABS activation at low speeds, usually below 8 km/h (5 mph). Upon investigation, the technician will find no DTCs set. Cause The cause of this condition may be an increased air gap between the wheel speed sensor and the hub reluctor ring due to rust and debris built up on the sensor mounting surface. Correction Measure AC voltage and clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surfaces. 1. 2. 3. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. Disconnect both the front wheel speed sensor connectors at the frame and harness. Place a Digital Volt Meter (DVM) across the terminals of each wheel speed sensor connector. Rotate the wheel clockwise approximately one revolution per second. The minimum reading should be at least 350 ACmV’s. If the reading is less than 350 ACmV’s, remove the wheel speed sensor. 5. Plug the wheel speed sensor bore in order to prevent debris from falling into the hub during service. 6. Clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface using a wire brush, sand paper, emery cloth, scotch brite, or other suitable material. Be sure to thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor surface. There should be no rust or corrosion. 7. Check the sensor head to determine if it has been warped/distorted due to the corrosion build up or other causes. Check the mounting surface on the sensor head for flatness by placing it on the edge of a metal machinists scale or other suitable straight edge to measure the flatness. Check the sensor for flatness in multiple (minimum 3) positions/directions. If the sensor head is distorted, replace the sensor. 8. Apply (spray) two thin coats of the specified rust penetrating lubricant (corrosion inhibitor) to the complete sensor mounting surface on the bearing hub. Allow to dry for 3-5 minutes between coats. Use ONLY Rust Penetrating Lubricant, P/N 89022217 (in Canada, P/N 89022218). 9. When the corrosion inhibitor is dry to the touch (about 10 minutes), apply a thin layer of bearing grease to the hub surface and sensor O-ring prior to sensor installation. Use ONLY Wheel Bearing Lubricant, P/N 01051344 (in Canada, P/N 993037). 10.Install either the original sensor or a new one in the hub. Ensure that the sensor is seated flush against the hub. Refer to the applicable Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement procedure in the ABS sub-section of the Service Manual. 11.Place the DVM across the sensor terminals and recheck the voltage while rotating the wheel. The voltage should now read at least 350 ACmV’s.
