1. Raise vehicle on hoist, and support lower control arm. 2. Remove wheel and tire assembly. 3. Mark position of upper eccentric camber bolts. 4. Remove upper ball joint spindle nut and pinch bolt, 5. Separate upper ball joint from spindle. 6. Remove nuts and camber bolts attaching upper control arm-to-frame, 7. Remove upper control arm. 8. Place control arm in vise, press ball joint out with ball joint press. See Fig. 1. 9. After ball joint has been pressed out install new ball joint (500-1109) with the words “install inboard” facing toward the inboard side of control arm. See Fig. 2. Incorrect installation may cause damage to the ball joint 10. Install ball joint boot with words “install inboard” towards the inboard side of control arm. See Fig. 3. 11. Install upper control arm. 12. Align upper eccentric camber bolts with marks made during removal. 13. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. Then check wheel alignment

Some 1999-2004 Navigator, 2002-2003 Blackwood, 2003-2005 Aviator, 2003-2004 Marauder and 2003-2004 Mustang vehicles built before 12/19/2004 equipped with 4.6L 4V/5.4 4V engine may exhibit a runs rough, lacks power, and engine misfire, prompted by a MIL light and DTC codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308, and P0316. ACTION Diagnose engine for engine misfire concern. If diagnostics determine an engine misfire which is characterized by leakage through exhaust valve(s), only replace the affected cylinder head(s). Label and disconnect the wiring (for easy installation). Remove the air conditioning compressor drive belt, if equipped. Loosen the alternator adjusting bracket bolt and adjusting bolt. Remove the alternator belt. 5. Remove the bracket and mounting bolts. 6. Remove the pivot bolt and nut. 7. Lift the alternator from the vehicle. When lifting the alternator out of the vehicle on some years with A/C, clearance may be restricted by the condenser cooling fan assembly or the A/C compressor and mounting bracket assembly, if so, removal of one of these items will be necessary. 8. Position the alternator against the engine. 9. Install the pivot bolt and nut. 10. Install the mounting bracket bolts, and adjusting bolt. 11. Install drive belts and adjust to specification. 12. Tighten all the mounting bolts and nuts. 13. Connect all alternator terminals. 14. Connect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the wiring and label for easy installation. Remove the air conditioning compressor drive belt. Loosen the alternator adjusting bracket locknut and adjusting screw. Remove the alternator belt. 5. Remove the bracket locknut and mounting bolt. 6. Remove the pivot bolt and nut. 7. Remove the alternator from the engine. 8. Position the alternator against the engine. 9. Install pivot bolt and nut. 10. Set the mounting bracket in place and install the bracket mounting bolt and locknut. 11. Install the drive belts and adjust to specification. 12. Tighten all the mounting bolts and nuts. 13. Connect all alternator terminals. 14. Connect the negative battery cable.

Special tooling required Mot. 1732 Tool for removing and re?tting the alternator pulley Tightening torquesm the alternator decou- pling pulley I – PARTS AND CONSUMABLES FOR THE REPAIRS Parts always to be replaced: – the alternator belt, – the tensioning roller, – the mechanic tension wheel mounting bolts. II – PRECAUTIONS DURING REPAIR It is essential to replace an alternator decoupling pulley with a decoupling pulley. III – EQUIPMENT REQUIRED – Torque wrench capable of tightening a left-hand thread. IV – REMOVAL Remove the vehicle alternator (see 16A, Starting – charging, Alternator 110276 110268 Position adapter (2) from the tool kit (Mot. 1732) (corresponding to the alternator rotor recess) in the hexagon socket (1). 110267 Position the hexagon socket (1) from the tool box (Mot. 1732) in the alternator pulley. 110269 Position the adapter holder (3) in socket (2). 110270 Hold the hexagon socket (1) using an open-jawed spanner (4). Loosen the decoupling pulley (5) using a ratchet, (6) (turning it in the clockwise direction.). Remove the decoupling pulley. V – REFITTING Position: – the hexagon socket in the alternator (1), – the adapter (2) (corresponding to the alternator ro- tor mark), – the adapter holder (3) on the adapter(2). Note: Check that the torque wrench is capable of tigh- tening in an anticlockwise direction. 110266 Screw the new decoupling pulley onto the alternator rotor. Tighten to torque the alternator decoupling pulley (80 Nm) using a torque wrench(7). Refit the vehicle alternator (see 16A, Starting – charging, Alternator).
