3.0L – VACUUM LEAKAGE NOISE AND MIL ON WITH LEAN CODES FORD: 2005 Taurus LINCOLN: 2003-2005 Lincoln LS MERCURY: 2005 Sable ISSUE Some 2005 Taurus and Sable vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 2V and some 2003- 2005 Lincoln LS vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 4V engine may exhibit a vacuum leakage noise or lean codes and/or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on. The cause may be a leak at the 0-ring on the intake manifold tuning (IMT) valve. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE Verify the concern by removing the IMT valve from the intake manifold and visually inspecting the 0-ring condition. If the 0-ring is flat or damaged, replace only the 0- ring not the actuator. For Lincoln LS, refer to the 2005 Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-14, IMT valve. For Taurus vehicles, the IMT valve is located on right front of upper intake manifold: 1. Remove the two (2) retainers. 2. Disconnect the electrical connector. 3. Remove the IMT valve. NOTE COAT THE IMT VALVE WITH CLEAN ENGINE OIL BEFORE INSTALLING IT IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. If the IMT valve 0-ring is not the cause, continue with normal diagnosis.

Removal CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect performance of vital components and systems and their failure can result in major service expense. A new part with the same part number must be used if installation is necessary. Do not use a new part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts. All vehicles 1. CAUTION: Discard the wheel hub retainer (3B477). It is a torque prevailing design and cannot be reused. If loosened, the retainer must be removed and a new one installed. NOTE: Make sure the steering wheel is in the unlocked position. Remove the hub cap or wheel cover, the wheel hub retainer, and the washer. Discard the retainer. 2. Remove the front brake disc. For additional information, refer to Section 206-03. 3. Remove and discard the cotter pin and nut. 4. CAUTION: Do not damage the tie-rod end boot when installing the special tool. NOTE: Remove the adapter from the ball end of the special tool. Apply a small amount of grease to the tie-rod end stud and the ball of the special tool. Using the special tools, disconnect the tie-rod end. Vehicles equipped with ABS 5. Remove the bolt and detach the ABS sensor. 6. Unclip the ABS sensor wire retainer and position the sensor out of the way. All vehicles 7. Remove and discard the nut.

SERVICE PROCEDURE Follow the steps in sequence to effectively repair the vehicle: • Drain cooling system contaminates. • Clean cooling system with Simple Green® Heavy Duty Cleaner and Degreaser. • Clean cooling system with Motorcraft® Engine Cooling System Iron Cleaner. NOTE ALL STEPS MUST BE COMPLETED IN ORDER TO PROPERLY CLEAN THE COOLING SYSTEM. ANY DEVIATION FROM THE SERVICE PROCEDURE WILL RESULT IN SHORTENED COOLANT PROTECTION AGAINST CORROSION IN THE COOLING SYSTEM. 1. Determine cooling system condition. Is the contaminated coolant in a flowable, liquid or milky state? a. No – Do not proceed as this procedure does not apply. (Non-Flushable Examples Figures 1-3)
