1. 2. 3. 4. Turn the ignition switch ON (II). Clear the DTC with the HDS. Remove the fuel fill cap for 5 seconds , then install it. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm with no load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle. Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P2422 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS. Does the screen indicate FAILED? YES – Go to step 6. NO – If the screen indicates PASSED, intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for a poor connection or loose terminals at the EVAP canister vent shut valve and ECM/PCM. If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 2 and recheck. Clear the DTC with the HDS. Remove the EVAP canister vent shut valve from the EVAP canister. Connect the 2P connector to the EVAP canister vent shut valve. Turn the ignition switch ON (II). Do the EVAP CVS ON in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Check the EVAP canister vent shut valve (A) operation. Does the valve operate? YES – Check for a blockage in the EVAP canister, then install the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and go to step 14. NO – Go to step 12. 12. Turn the ignition switch OFF. 13. Replace the EVAP canister vent shut valve. 14. Turn the ignition switch ON (II). 15. Reset the ECM/PCM with the HDS. 16. Do the ECM/PCM idle learn procedure. 17. Turn the ignition switch OFF. 18. Remove the fuel fill cap for 5 seconds , then install it. 19. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm with no load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle. 20. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES – If DTC P2422 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor or the EVAP canister vent shut valve and the ECM/PCM, then go to step 1. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC’s troubleshooting. NO – Go to step 21. 21. Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P2422 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS. Does the screen indicate PASSED? YES – Troubleshooting is complete. NO – If the screen indicates FAILED, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor or the EVAP canister vent shut valve and the ECM/PCM, then go to step 1. If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 16 and recheck.

NOTE: Hydraulic valve lifters are used; no valve adjustment is required. When valve and/or valve seat is machined, valve clearance is reduced and may cause improper valve operation. Different length push rods are available for correcting clearance. Valve lifter must be collapsed to check valve clearance. 1. With valve cover removed, position piston No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. Completely collapse cylinder No. 1 intake valve lifter and hold valve lifter collapsed. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between rocker arm and valve stem. 2. Clearance should be within specification. Refer to COLLAPSED VALVE LIFTER CLEARANCE table. Replace push rod, if necessary, to obtain correct clearance. 3. Position crankshaft as specified. See, in this article, VALVE CLEARANCE CHECKING SEQUENCE table, and check appropriate valves. Replace push rods if clearance is not within specification. 4. If push rod(s) is replaced, ensure corresponding cylinder piston is below TDC. It will be necessary to loosen or remove rocker arm to replace push rod. NOTE: Samurai & Sidekick 1) Remove rocker cover. Rotate crankshaft until zero degree (TDC) timing mark of timing belt cover is in line with timing mark on crankshaft pulley. 2) Cylinder No. 1 should be at TDC on compression stroke. Remove distributor cap, and ensure rotor is pointed upward at distributor hold-down bolt and to No. 1 terminal of distributor cap. If not as described, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees. 3) Measure valve clearance between adjustment screw and valve stem using thickness gauge. Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 2 and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 3. 4) Turn crankshaft one complete revolution (360 degrees). Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 3 and 4 and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 2 and 4. Ensure clearance is within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. 5) If clearance adjustment is necessary, loosen lock nut and turn adjusting screw. After adjusting clearance, tighten adjusting Swift DOHC uses hydraulic lifters. Adjustment is not required. screw lock nut to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 N.m) on Samurai or 90-108 INCH lbs. Removal (3.8L – VIN K) 1. Release fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Clean the fuel rail assembly and connections. Disconnect the fuel feed pipe and return pipe at the fuel rail. See FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS . 2. Disconnect the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator. Remove the ignition coil wires. Disconnect the 6 injector electrical connectors. Remove the fuel rail hold-down bolts. Remove the fuel rail with equal force on both sides of the fuel rail. 3. To remove injector(s) from the fuel rail, remove the fuel injector retainer clip. Remove the fuel injector from the fuel rail. Remove and discard the fuel injector upper “O” ring. Installation
