2005 Saturn ION BATTERY REPLACEMENT REMOVAL PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (2). 2. Disconnect the positive battery cable (1). 3. Remove the battery hold down retainer bolt and retainer (1). 4. Disconnect the battery vent assembly. 5. Remove the battery brace bolt and brace (2). IMPORTANT: Do not tip the battery more than 40 degrees during removal. 6. Remove the battery. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1. Install the battery to the battery tray. IMPORTANT: Do not tip the battery more than 40 degrees during battery installation. NOTE : Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 2. Install the battery brace (2) and the brace bolt. Tighten the battery brace bolt to 25 N.m (18 lb ft) . 3. Install the battery hold down retainer (1) and bolt. Tighten the battery hold down retainer bolt to 18 N.m (13 lb ft) . 4. Connect the battery vent assembly. 5. Connect the positive battery cable bolt (1). Tighten the battery positive cable terminal bolt to 17 N.m (13 lb ft) . 6. Connect the negative battery cable bolt (2).

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (See: Battery Cable\Service and Repair). 2. Disconnect the body wiring harness electrical connector (3) from the battery current sensor (2). 3. Disconnect the body wiring harness electrical connector (4) from the negative battery cable electrical connector (1). 4. Disconnect the body wiring harness electrical connector (2) from the positive battery cable electrical connector (3). 5. Open the positive battery cable cover (2). 6. Loosen the positive battery cable terminal nut. 7. Remove the positive battery cable terminal from the battery positive terminal and reposition the cable out of the way. 8. Remove the battery vent hose grommet (1) from the battery box. 9. Remove the battery hold down bolt (2). 10. Remove the battery hold down (3). 11. Remove the battery (1). 12. Remove the battery vent hose (1) from the battery, if required. Installation Procedure

1. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM) (2) from the battery box cover (1) and relocate to the side. 2. Release the locking tab (1) on the side of the battery box. 3. Release the alignment tabs (2) on the front of the battery box. 4. Remove the battery box lid (3). 5. Disconnect the positive and negative battery cables. Refer to [Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection]. 6. Remove the battery hold down bolt (5), battery hold down (4), and washer (3). 7. Remove the battery (1). Installation Procedure 1. Position the battery (1) in the battery box (2). 2. Install the washer (3) and battery hold down (4). CAUTION: Refer to [Fastener Notice]. 3. Install the hold down bolt (5). Tightening torque Tighten the hold down bolt to 15 N.m (11 lb.ft) . 4. Install the positive and negative battery cables. Refer to [Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection]. 5. Position the battery lid (3) so that the alignment tabs (2) are in position.

REMOVAL 1. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. 2. Verify that the ignition switch and all accessories are OFF. 3. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable remote terminal from the remote battery post. 4. Remove air cleaner housing. 5. Remove battery splash shield. 6. Remove two short bolts to battery hold down. 7. Slide battery rearward to disconnect the negative and positive battery terminals from battery. 8. Slide battery toward rear of vehicle and lift out through wheel well opening. Negative Battery Cable Remote Terminal 9. Remove battery from vehicle. 1. Tighten clamp nuts to 8.5 N.m (75 in. lbs.) torque INSTALLATION For installation, reverse the above procedures. Inspect and clean battery and attaching components before installation. WARNING: DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN BATTERY CABLE CLAMPS, DAMAGE TO CLAMPS CAN RESULT

DESCRIPTION
When the engine is first started, some vehicles may exhibit a loud ticking noise from the variable valve timing
(VVT). This is caused by the lock pin of the variable valve timing actuator not fully engaging. Heat treatment has
now been added around the hole of the variable valve timing rotor lock pin to prevent this from happening
