Removal & Installation WARNING Do not loosen the axle wheel hub retainer until the wheel and tire are removed from the vehicle. Wheel bearing damage will occur if the wheel bearing is unloaded with the weight of the vehicle applied. NOTE Have an assistant press the brake pedal to keep the axle from turning. 1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures. ? Remove the axle-to-wheel hub retainer nut and washer. ? Remove the parking brake shoes. WARNING Do not use a hammer to separate the outboard CV-joint from the hub. Damage to the threads and internal CV-joint components can result. 2. 3. ? Press the outboard CV-joint until it is loose from the hub. ? Remove and discard the toe link-to-wheel knuckle nut. WARNING Do not damage the boot while separating the toe link from the wheel knuckle. 4. 5. ? Remove the bolt and separate the toe link from the wheel knuckle. ? Remove and discard the upper arm-to-wheel knuckle nut. WARNING Do not damage the boot while separating the ball joint from the wheel knuckle. 6. 7. ? Remove the bolt and separate the upper arm from the wheel knuckle. ? Remove and discard the lower arm-to-wheel knuckle nut. 8. 9. ? Remove the lower arm-to-wheel knuckle bolt. ? Remove the wheel knuckle. ? Using a suitable press, remove and discard the wheel hub. ? Remove and discard the wheel bearing retainer ring. ? Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. ? Observe the following torques: 2. Lower arm-to-wheel knuckle nut: 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm). ? Upper arm-to-wheel knuckle nut: 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm). ? Toe link-to-wheel knuckle nut: 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm). ? Axle-to-hub retainer nut: 203 ft. lbs. (275 Nm). ? ? Always install a new: 3. Axle-to-wheel hub retainer nut. ? Toe link-to-wheel knuckle nut. ? Upper arm-to-wheel knuckle nut. ? Lower arm-to-wheel knuckle nut. ? Wheel hub. ? Wheel bearing retainer ring. ? ? 1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section. ? Remove or disconnect the following: NOTE Do not loosen the axle wheel hub retainer until the wheel and tire are removed from the vehicle. Removal NOTE: If, for any reason, the rear hub (1109) is removed from the spindle, the old hub seal must be removed and a new hub seal installed. 1. Set the parking brake and loosen the eight axle shaft retaining bolts. 2. Raise the vehicle to the desired working height, keeping the axle parallel with the floor. 3. Release parking brake and back off the rear brake adjustment, if necessary. 4. Remove the wheel (1007). 5. Remove brake drum (1126). Push-on (sheet metal) drum retainer nuts may be discarded. Push-on retainer nuts are used for shipping purposes only and have no vehicle function. If retainers are not flush against the drum, the retainers can prevent the wheel from being flat against the drum, which could contribute to vibration. 6. Place a drain pan under the axle shaft (4234) and rear hub. Remove the eight 7/16-inch axle shaft bolts and remove the axle shaft. Axle Shaft Removal 7. CAUTION: The right hub nuts are right-hand thread; the left hub nuts are left-hand thread. Each hub nut is stamped RH for the right hub nut or LH for the left hub nut. Install Locknut Wrench T85T-4252-AH so that the drive tangs of the tool engage the four slots in the hub nut. 8. CAUTION: A new hub nut must be installed if used hub nut comes apart during removal or installation. CAUTION: Under no circumstances are power impact tools to be used when performing these operations. NOTE: The hub nut will ratchet during this operation. Remove hub nut (counterclockwise for right-hand thread; clockwise for left-hand thread). 9. Install Step Plate Adapter D80L-630-7 (Part of Step Plate Adapter Set D80L-630-A) or equivalent. 10. Install 2-Jaw Puller D80L-1002-L or equivalent and loosen rear hub to the point of removal. 11. CAUTION: Do not drop outer hub bearing when removing. Remove rear hub assembly.

Removal 1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02. 2. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly. 3. Remove rear stabilizer bar link and bushing link nuts at both ends of rear stabilizer bar (5A772) . Rotate bar up and out of the way. 4. Disconnect parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635) at rear disc brake caliper (2553) . 5. Install three Rotunda Spring Cages 086-00031 or equivalent to rear spring as follows: a. Install one spring cage without an adjuster link to the inboard side (the innermost “bend” of the rear spring (5560) ). b. Install two more spring cages, with adjusters, at 120 degree angles to the previously installed cage. Spring, Rear 6. Place a transmission jack or suitable stand under the rear suspension arm and bushing (5500) as far outboard as possible. 7. Support the rear wheel knuckle (5A969) assembly by wiring the rear suspension arm and bushing to the body. 8. Remove lower rear shock absorber mounting bolt, washer and nut. 9. NOTE: Rear suspension arm and bushing must not be lowered until pivot bolts are loose. Do not attempt to remove plastic cap on front pivot nut. Loosen both inboard pivot bolts on rear suspension arm and bushing . 10. Remove two bolts and nuts retaining rear suspension arm and bushing to rear wheel knuckle . 11. Lower the rear suspension arm and bushing by lowering jack. Ensure spring cages properly seat on rear spring as rear suspension arm and bushing is dropped. 12. Remove jack, lower rear suspension arm and bushing down fully by hand and remove rear spring with cages in place. 13. Remove rear spring center mounting insulators (5741) , if necessary. 14. If spring cages are to be removed for installation on rear spring , use Coil Spring Compressor D78P-5310-A or equivalent to compress rear spring and remove cages. Rear spring center mounting insulator should be installed on rear spring before installing rear spring in tool to prevent slipping of plates.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. 2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. 3. Use the J 42066 and use a 1/2 inch breaker bar to counter hold the rear wheel hub. Important: DO NOT allow the drive shaft to hang freely. Suspend the drive shaft upward. 4. Remove the drive shaft bolts. 5. Remove the drive shaft from the rear wheel hub flange. 6. 7. 8. 9. Remove the brake pipe clip from the lower control arm. Remove the brake pipe from the lower control arm. Remove the rear brake caliper. Suspend the rear brake caliper. The brake system remains closed. 1. Raise and support the vehicle. 2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. 3. Use the J 42066 and use a 1/2 inch breaker bar to counter hold the rear wheel hub. Important: DO NOT allow the drive shaft to hang freely. Suspend the drive shaft upward. 4. Remove the drive shaft bolts. 5. Remove the drive shaft from the rear wheel hub flange. 6. 7. 8. 9. Remove the brake pipe clip from the lower control arm. Remove the brake pipe from the lower control arm. Remove the rear brake caliper. Suspend the rear brake caliper. The brake system remains closed. 13. Attach the J 42094-2 and attach the J 42094-1 to the rear wheel hub flange to hold the rear wheel hub while removing the rear wheel hub nut. Use the drive shaft bolts if necessary.14. Remove the rear wheel hub nut. 15. Use the J 42094-10 as a spacer to attach the J 42094-4 to the J 42094-1 with the supplied three bolts.

During assembly, some wheel speed sensors may have been improperly installed and do not seal the hub assembly. Water may enter the hub assembly and damage the wheel bearing. In areas where road salt is used, the wheel bearings may corrode, which may cause the wheel to separate and fall off, increasing the risk of a crash. CORRECTIVE ACTION Inspect both rear ABS wheel speed sensors and their O-rings. If an ABS wheel speed sensor or O-ring is damaged, replace the damaged part and the hub bearing unit on that wheel. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. 2. 3. 4. Raise the vehicle on a lift. Remove the rear wheels. Remove both rear ABS wheel speed sensors. Inspect the rear ABS wheel speed sensors and their O-rings. • If a rear ABS wheel speed sensor O-ring is damaged (cut, torn, pinched, or flattened), replace the O-ring and the corresponding rear hub bearing unit, then go to step 5. DAMAGED O-RINGS: O-ring is pinched. • If the rear ABS wheel speed sensor tip has any physical damage, remove the original sensor assembly, replace the corresponding rear hub bearing unit(s), and connect the new sensor’s wire harness. Then go to step 5. – Refer to page 18-34 (with disc brakes) or 18-36 (with drum brakes) of the 2006–07 Civic Service Manual, or – Online, enter keyword HUB, then select Rear Knuckle/Hub Bearing Unit Replacement from the list. O-ring is rolled out of the groove and flattened. -Refer to page 18-34 (with disc brakes) or 18-36 (with drum brakes) of the 2006–07 Civic Service Manual, or – Online, enter keyword HUB, then select Rear Knuckle/Hub Bearing Unit Replacement from the list. • If the rear ABS wheel speed sensors and their O-rings are OK, go to step 5. 5. Lubricate the ABS wheel speed sensor O-ring and the sensor hole in the knuckle with multi-purpose grease.
