Installation (200SX & 300ZX) 1. Ensure that piston No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Remove valve covers and loosen all rocker
shaft bolts. Do not bend timing belt. Install tensioner and return spring. 2. Turn tensioner clockwise and temporarily tighten lock nut. Install timing belt. Align White lines on timing belt with punch mark on camshaft pulleys and crankshaft pulley. Arrow on timing belt must be pointing toward front belt covers. 3. Using Allen wrench, slowly turn tensioner clockwise and counterclockwise 2 or 3 times. When camshafts and crankshaft marks are aligned, tighten tensioner lock nut. See Fig. 2 . Ensure that camshaft lobes are correctly positioned. Tighten rocker shaft bolts in 2 stages. 4. Refill and bleed air from cooling system. To complete installation, reverse removal procedures. Adjust drive belts to proper tension.

Drive Belt, Serpentine NOTE: Minor cracks in the V-grooved portion of the serpentine drive belt are considered normal and acceptable. If the drive belt (8620) has chunks missing from the ribs, the drive belt should be replaced. NOTE: When installing drive belts on pulley, make sure that all V-grooves make proper contact with pulleys. Conditions requiring drive belt replacement are excessive wear, rib chunkout, severe glazing, frayed cords, etc. Replace any drive belt that exhibits any of these conditions. Removal 1. WARNING: USE CAUTION WHEN REMOVING OR INSTALLING DRIVE BELT TO MAKE SURE THAT TOOL DOES NOT SLIP. Using a 15 mm socket or wrench on bolt, attach drive belt tensioner pulley. Rotate drive belt tensioner (6B209) clockwise to remove drive belt from pulleys. Pulley Routing, Accessory Drive Belt — 3.8L Engine Installation 1. Install drive belt over all pulleys (except drive belt tensioner). 2. Rotate drive belt tensioner as described under Removal to install drive belt over drive belt tensioner pulley. Make sure that all V-grooves make proper contact with pulleys.

To ensure maximum drive belt life and proper component operation, replacement drive belts (8620) must be the same type and size as the original drive belts . When installing a new drive belt , ensure that it is properly seated on the pulleys. NOTE: Mark the direction of rotation on the drive belt with a marking pen to ensure correct installation if the drive belt is to be reused. Failure to do so may result in drive belt noise. Drive Belt, A/C Compressor Removal 1. Loosen the A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley tensioner bolt. 2. Loosen the A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley adjustment bolt. 3. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt from the A/C compressor clutch pulley (2E884) , A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley and the crankshaft pulley (6312) . Installation 1. Inspect the pulleys for warping or abnormal wear. Replace any damaged pulley. To replace the A/C compressor clutch pulley , refer to Section 12-03B. To replace crankshaft pulley , refer to Section 03-01. 2. Install the A/C compressor drive belt on the A/C compressor clutch pulley , A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley, and crankshaft pulley . 3. Adjust the A/C compressor drive belt tension. Refer to the procedure in this section. 4. Tighten the A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley tensioner bolt securely. Drive Belt, Generator Removal 1. Raise and support the vehicle. 2. Remove the RH engine and transmission splash shield (6775) . 3. Loosen the inner and outer generator-to-generator regulator mounting bracket bolts. 4. Loosen the generator locking bolt.

MANUFACTURER’S SUGGESTED SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE The manufacturer recommends the belt be replaced every 60,000 miles, except in California. In California, inspect timing belt at 60,000 miles, and replace as necessary. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. TIMING & COUNTERBALANCE SHAFT BELTS Removal CAUTION: DO NOT rotate engine counterclockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine). If reusing timing belt, place reference mark on timing belt to indicate direction of rotation before removing. 1. Remove drive belts and drive pulleys from crankshaft and water pump. Remove timing belt covers. To align timing marks, rotate engine clockwise so No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks align with upper surface of rocker cover. Dowel pin of camshaft sprocket should be pointing upward. See Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 . 2. Remove timing belt auto tensioner. If reusing timing belt, place mark on timing belt to indicate direction of belt rotation. Remove timing belt. Remove camshaft sprockets. 3. Remove plug at left side of block and insert a screwdriver to hold left counterbalance shaft in position. Screwdriver will have to be inserted at least 2.36″ (60 mm). Remove oil pump sprocket nut and sprocket. See Fig. 2 . 4. Loosen right counterbalance shaft sprocket mounting bolt. Remove tensioner “B” and timing belt “B”. See Fig. 2 . Remove crankshaft sprocket “B” from crankshaft.
