1. Install cylinder head. A. Place cylinder head on cylinder block. (a) Place a new cylinder head gasket on the cylinder block. CAUTION: Be careful of the installation direction. (b) Place the cylinder head on the cylinder head gasket. B. Install cylinder head bolts. NOTE: The cylinder head bolts are tightened in 2 progressive steps (steps (b) and (d)). If any cylinder head bolt is broken or deformed, replace it. (a) Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the cylinder head bolts. Cylinder Head Installation Install and uniformly tighten the 10 cylinder head bolts and plate washers in several passes, in the sequence shown. Torque: 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.) If any one of the cylinder head bolts does not meet the torque specification, replace the cylinder head bolt. (c) Mark the front of the cylinder head bolt head with paint. (d) Retighten the cylinder head bolts 90° in the numerical order shown. (e) Check that the painted mark is now at a 90° angle to the front. Install the 2 bolts holding the water bypass pipe to the cylinder head. Torque to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.) (g) Connect the camshaft position sensor connector. 2. Install spark plug tubes. (a) Clean the cylinder head tube holes of any residual adhesive, oil or foreign particles. Remove any oil with kerosene or gasoline. (b) Screw the threads of the spark plug tube coated with adhesive into the cylinder head.

ENGINE – 5.0L – NEW TORQUE-TO-YIELD CYLINDER HEAD BOLT KIT AND NEW PROCEDURES – SERVICE TIP FORD: 1988 THUNDERBIRD 1988-91 CROWN VICTORIA 1988-95 MUSTANG 1991-93 THUNDERBIRD LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 COUGAR 1988-90 TOWN CAR 1988-91 GRAND MARQUIS 1988-92 MARK VII 1991-93 COUGAR LIGHT TRUCK: 1988-95 BRONCO, ECONOLINE, F-150-350 SERIES ISSUE: In 1992, the type of cylinder head bolts used on the 5.0L engines was changed to the torque-to-yield bolts. Depending on the build date of the engine, the 1992 model year engines came with either torque-to-yield bolts or standard torque, not a combination of the two (2). In 1993, torque-to-yield bolts were used on all 5.OL engines. ACTION: Refer to the following for proper bolt identification, usage and torque specifications. ^ The two (2) types of bolts being used are physically different. Refer to Figure 1. ^ The standard torque bolt is a non-flanged hex head bolt. ^ The torque-to-yield bolt is a flanged head bolt. ^ The two (2) types of bolts may be used on any of the 5.0L engines. ^ The bolts must be all the same style on each cylinder head. CAUTION: DO NOT USE BOTH TYPES OF CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS ON ONE (1) CYLINDER HEAD. EACH CYLINDER HEAD MUST HAVE ALL OF ONE (1) TYPE OF RETAINING BOLT: STANDARD TORQUE OR TORQUE-TO-YIELD. The torque-to-yield cylinder head bolts will be available only in a packaged kit (F3ZZ-6065-E). The kit will contain the following: Five (5) 7/16-14×3.94 Bolts Five (5) 7/16-14×2.49 Bolts One (1) 3/8-16×7/16-3.93 Stud One (1) Instruction Sheet (I.S. # 6605) Some applications use a various quantity of studs for fastening of items to the cylinder head. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Drain the coolant and disconnect the upper radiator hose. Remove the breather hose (between the air cleaner and the rocker cover). Remove the air-intake hose. Remove the vacuum hose, fuel hose and coolant hose. Remove the cables from the spark plugs. The cables should be removed by holding the boot portion. Remove the ignition coil. Remove the surge tank. Remove the intake manifold. Remove the heat protector and exhaust manifold assembly Remove the coolant pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley. Remove the timing belt cover. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Zoom Sized for Print 12. Move the timing belt tensioner pulley toward the coolant pump and temporarily secure it. 13. Remove the timing belt. 14. Remove the rocker cover. 15. Remove the cylinder head assembly. The cylinder head bolts should be removed using Special Tool, Cylinder Head Bolt Wrench (09221-21000), in the sequence as shown in the illustration. 16. Remove the gasket pieces from the cylinder block top surface and cylinder head bottom surface. NOTE: 1. Make sure that the gasket pieces do not fall in to the engine. INSPECTION 1. Check the cylinder head for cracks, damage and coolant leakage. 2. Remove scale, sealing compound and carbon deposits completely. After cleaning oil passages, apply compressed air to make certain that the passages are not clogged. 3. Check the cylinder head surface for flatness using a straight edge in the direction of A, B, …as shown. If flatness exceeds service limit in any direction, replace the cylinder head, or lightly machine the cylinder head surface. Cylinder head flatness Standard value: Less than 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch) Limit: 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) REASSEMBLY 1. Clean all gasket surfaces of the cylinder block and the cylinder head. 2. Install a new cylinder head gasket onto the cylinder head assembly. Do not apply sealant to the gasket and do not reuse the old cylinder head gasket.

Remove outer (upper) timing chain. See TIMING CHAINS . Remove idler sprocket and shaft. Prevent camshafts from turning, and remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Remove camshaft sprocket. Mark and remove camshaft bearing caps in reverse order of installation. See Fig. 30 . Remove camshafts. 2. Loosen cylinder head bolts in 2 or 3 steps, in reverse order of tightening sequence. See Fig. 31 . Remove camshaft sprocket cover. Remove outer (upper) chain tensioner and guide. Remove outer timing chain. Remove idler sprocket bolt. Remove cylinder head. Inspection (240SX, Altima & Frontier) 1. Inspect timing chain roller links. Replace timing chain if roller links are cracked or worn. Inspect cylinder head and cylinder block mating surfaces for warpage. If warpage exceeds specification, machine cylinder head. See CYLINDER HEAD (EXCEPT 1997 PICKUP) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. 2. If machining reduces cylinder head height to less than specification, replace cylinder head. After machining, rotate camshaft by hand. Replace cylinder head if camshaft does not rotate freely. Installation (240SX, Altima & Frontier) 1. Install cylinder head and NEW gasket. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence shown. See Fig. 31 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 2. Install upper timing chain. See TIMING CHAINS . Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
