1. Check the engine oil level. Is the level OK? YES- Go to step 2 . NO- Adjust the engine oil to the proper level, then go to step 14 . 2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II). 3. Clear the DTC with the HDS. 4. Do the VTEC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES- Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch) and the ECM/PCM. NO- Go to step 5 . 5. Check the result of step 4 . Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) Failure Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) Open Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) SIG Line Open Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) GND Line Open Is the test result any of the above? YES- Go to step 6 . NO- Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch). If it is OK, replace the rocker arm oil control solenoid (VTEC solenoid valve) (see step CMP SENSOR A REPLACEMENT ), then go to 14 . 6. Turn the ignition switch OFF. 7. Disconnect the rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch) 2P connector. 8. Check for continuity between rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch) 2P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2.

Spark Check for spark at secondary coil wire and each spark plug wire using a spark tester. If spark is not present, continue with following tests. Check spark plug wire resistance on suspect wires. Resistance should be less than 25,000 ohms. Ignition Coil Power Source 1. On Civic, remove distributor cap to check power source directly at coil. On all models, disconnect ignition coil primary leads. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and Black/Yellow wire terminal of ignition coil harness. 2. Battery voltage should be present. If battery voltage is not present, check for open in Black/Yellow wire between coil and ignition switch. Ignitor Power Source Turn ignition off. Disconnect harness connector at distributor. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check for battery voltage between ground and Black/Yellow wire of harness. If voltage is not present, check for open in Black/Yellow wire between ignition coil and harness connector. If wire is okay, check ignition coil resistance (for internal short to ground). Ignitor Check Check TDC/CRANK/CYL sensor resistance values. See TACH PULSE SIGNAL . Check power sources. If no problems are found and spark is not present, replace ignitor. Ignition Coil Resistance (Accord & Prelude) 1. Remove primary and secondary leads from ignition coil. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between primary terminals “A” and “C” (“A” and “B” for Prelude) of ignition coil. See Fig. 2 . Resistance should be .6-.8 ohm at room temperature. 2. On Accord, check resistance between terminals “B” and “D” of ignition coil (tachometer circuit). Resistance should be about 2090-2310 ohms at room temperature. 3. On all models, check secondary resistance between terminal “A” and secondary output terminal (coil tower). See IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE table. Check for continuity between terminals “A” and “B” (“A” and “C” for Prelude). Continuity should exist. If readings are not within specification, replace coil.

Removal 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Remove steering column shroud and lower the steering column. Refer to Steering Column: Service and Repair: Removal/Installation . 3. Disconnect the switch wiring at the multiple plug. 4. Remove the two nuts that retain the switch to the steering column. 5. LIFT the switch VERTICALLY UPWARD to disengage the actuator rod from the switch and remove switch. Installation 1. When installing the ignition switch, both the locking mechanism at the top of the column and the switch itself must be in LOCK position for correct adjustment. To hold the mechanical parts of the column in LOCK position, move the shift lever into PARK (with automatic transmissions) or REVERSE (with manual transmissions), turn the key to LOCK position, and remove the key. New replacement switches, when received, are already pinned in LOCK position by a metal shipping pin inserted in a locking hole on the side of the switch. 2. Engage the actuator rod in the switch. Must be inserted in the slot of the sliding, white carrier. 3. Position the switch on the column and install the retaining nuts, but do not tighten them. 4. Move the switch UP and DOWN along the column to locate the mid-position of rod lash. Tighten the two ignition switch retaining nuts (TOP NUT FIRST to minimize rod binding) to 4.51-7.34 N.m(40-65 in-lb) . 5. Remove the lockpin. Connect the battery cable, and check for proper start in PARK or NEUTRAL. Also, ensure the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE and REVERSE position and that the engine will shut off in either DRIVE, REVERSE or NEUTRAL. If the engine will not shut off in the above positions then the switch is NOT adjusted properly. The switch will have to be re-adjusted. Refer to Ignition Switch: Adjustments . 6. Raise the steering column into position at instrument panel. Refer to Steering Column: Service and Repair: Removal/Installation . 7. Confirm that accessories are deactivated with ignition switch in OFF position, and that accessories are operable with switch in RUN position.
