1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-00. 2. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-00. 3. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table. 4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. 5. Fill the axle with the specified quantity of the specified lubricant. For additional information, refer to the Specifications in this section. Item 2: Rear Disc Brake Caliper Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose. Provide a suitable support. Position the rear disc brake caliper aside. For additional information, refer to Section 206-00. Item 7: Differential Pinion Shaft Removal Note 1. Move the differential pinion shaft out far enough to remove the U-washers. Replace the shaft and install the lock bolt finger tight when U-washers are removed. Item 8: U-washer Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the axle shaft grooves. Remove the U-washers. 1. Push the axle shafts inboard. 2. Remove the U-washers. Item 10 and 11: Wheel Bearing Oil Seal and Axle Shaft Bearing Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Never remove the wheel bearing oil seal by itself. Always remove the wheel bearing oil seal and the rear wheel bearing at the same time. For the 8.8 inch rear axle, use the special tools to remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel bearing oil seal. 2. CAUTION: Never remove the wheel bearing oil seal by itself. Always remove the wheel bearing oil seal and the rear wheel bearing at the same time. For the 9.75 inch and the 10.25 inch rear axles, use the special tools to remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel bearing oil seal. Item 11: Axle Shaft Bearing Installation Note 1. For the 8.8 inch and the 9.75 inch rear axles, use the special tools to install the rear axle wheel bearing. 2. For the 10.25 inch rear axle, use the special tools shown to install the rear axle wheel bearing. Item 10: Wheel Bearing Oil Seal Installation Note 1. Use the special tools shown to install the rear wheel bearing oil seal. Item 8: U-washer Installation Note 1. CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the U-washer grooves. Install the U-washers. 1. Position the two U-washers on the button end of the axle shafts. 2. Pull the axle shafts outward.

Removal 1. Raise and support vehicle on frame rails. Remove wheels. Index mark drive shaft and axle yoke for installation reference. Remove drive shaft. 2. Disconnect rear track bar at axle bracket. Remove axle vent tube at axle. Disconnect parking brake cables at equalizer (rear axle). Remove wheel speed sensors (if equipped). Disconnect shock absorbers from axle. Disconnect brake line at axle junction block. Disconnect stabilizer bar links from axle. 3. Support axle housing. Disconnect upper and lower control arms at axle. Lower and remove assembly to release coil spring pressure. Remove coil springs. Lower and remove axle housing assembly from vehicle. Installation Align spring mounting points, and place axle in position. To install, reverse removal procedure.

INSTALL OR CONNECT It is essential that the differential carrier, axle seals are not lubricated or damaged during this process. Prior to drive axle installation, cover the shock mounting bracket, lower control arm bail stud, and all other sharp edges with a shop towel so as not to damage the boot. 1. Axle shaft to differential carrier. With both hands on the tripot housing, align the splines on the shaft with the differential carrier. Then center the drive axle into the differential carrier seal and firmly push the shaft straight into the differential carrier until the snap ring seats into place. NOTICE: Be careful that the safety stand does not damage or bend any components it may contact. 2. Raise the safety stand to support the weight of the lower control arm. Important: It will be necessary to slightly start the knuckle onto the drive axle while simultaneously guiding the lower ball stud to its proper 1997 Oldsmobile Truck Bravada V6-4.3L VIN W location on the steering knuckle. 3. Assemble the lower ball joint. 4. Lower shock mount. 5. Upper ball joint. 6. Drive axle washer and nut. 7. Drive axle nut. – Tighten bolts to 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.). 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. Remove the drive pinion from the axle. 7. Press the bearing off of the pinion using theJ 22912-B . 8. Remove the shim. 9. Remove the drive pinion bearing cups from the axle housing using a hammer and a brass drift in the slots provided. Move the drift back and forth between one side of the cup and the other in order to work the cups out of the housing evenly. Installation Procedure 1. Install the outer pinion bearing cup using the J 8611-01 (8.6 inch axle) (2), or the J 7818 (9.5 inch axle) (2) and the J 8092 (1). 2. Install the inner pinion bearing cup using the J 8608 (8.6 inch axle) (2), or the J 22306 (9.5 inch axle) (2) and the J 8092 (1). 3. Determine the selective shim thickness for the pinion. 4. Install the selective shim between the inner pinion bearing and the shoulder on the gear. 5. Install the inner pinion bearing using the J 24433 (8.6 inch axle) or the J 36614 (9.5 inch axle). Press the bearing on until the cone seats on the pinion shim. 6. Install a new collapsible spacer. 7. Install the pinion into the axle housing. 8. Install the outer pinion bearing onto the pinion. 9. Install a new pinion oil seal and the pinion yoke. 10. Install the differential. 11. Install the brake drums. 12. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. 13. Fill the axle with lubricant. Use the proper fluid. 14. Lower the vehicle.

Clean bolts and nuts to ensure tightening torque is correct. AXLE SHAFT Removal 1) Remove axle shaft nut. Remove wheel. Remove brake caliper, and secure aside. Remove tie rod end bolts. 2) Remove 2 bolts attaching spindle assembly to strut assembly. Remove lower ball joint bolt or nut if necessary. Remove spindle assembly. Loosen inner CV joint from transaxle flange. On models with V6 engine, use Axle Press (3283) to press axle from wheel housing. Clean old locking compound from splines. Remove axle shaft assembly. See Fig. 1. Disassembly & Reassembly 1) Remove axle shaft boot(s). Using a drift, remove protective cap from CV joint. Remove circlip from inner CV joint. Support CV joint with axle assembly on Support Stand (VW 402). 2) Using Driver (VW 408A), press inner CV joint off axle shaft. DO NOT disassemble inner CV joint, replace complete unit. To remove outer CV joint, use a driver and hammer to drive CV joint off axle shaft.
