Tools Required J 38185 Hose Clamp Pliers Removal Procedure 1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield (3.8L only). Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L. 2. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling. 3. UseJ 38185 in order to position aside the heater hose inlet and outlet clamps at the heater core. 4. Disconnect the inlet and outlet heater hose from the heater core. 5. Remove the vacuum tank. Refer to Vacuum Tank Replacement in HVAC System – Manual. 6. Remove the floor carpet. Refer to Front Floor Panel Carpet Replacement in Interior Trim. 7. Remove the rear floor air outlet duct from the holes in the floor reinforcement. 8. Disconnect the rear floor air outlet duct from the heater core outlet cover. 9. Remove the bolts from the vaccum harness bracket and position bracket aside. Important: Position the heater core outlet cover downward and rearward in order to disconnect the cover from the rear area floor duct assembly. 10. Remove the heater core outlet cover screws. 11. Remove the heater core outlet cover. 12. Remove the heater core cover screws. 13. Remove the heater core cover. 14. Remove and discard the seals (1,2) from the heater core cover. 15. Remove the caulk (3) from the heater core cover. 16. Remove and discard the heater core outer seal (5) from the heater core. 17. Remove the heater core clamp screw (1). 18. Remove the heater core retaining clamp. 19. Remove the heater core pipe retainer clamp screw (2). 20. Remove the heater core from the HVAC lower case. 21. Remove the heater core pipe retainer clamp from the heater core pipes. 22. Remove and discard the heater core lower seal (4) from the HVAC case. 23. Remove and discard the heater core center seal (3) from the HVAC case. 24. Remove and discard the heater core upper seal (2) from the HVAC lower case. 25. Remove and discard the heater core side seals (1) from the HVAC lower case. Installation Procedure

1. Remove the heater air plenum chamber (18471) assembly as outlined. 2. Remove the four retaining screws from the heater core cover (18B300) and remove the heater core cover from the heater air plenum chamber assembly. Heater Core Removal 3. Pull the heater core (18476) assembly from the heater air plenum chamber assembly. Installation 1. Carefully install heater core assembly into the heater air plenum chamber assembly. Visually check to ensure that heater core case seal (18658) is properly positioned. 2. Position the heater core cover and install the four retaining screws. 3. Install the heater air plenum chamber assembly as outlined. Heater Air Plenum Chamber Removal 1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01. 2. Disconnect the heater water hoses (18472) from the heater core tubes. Plug the ends of the heater water hoses to prevent coolant loss. 3. Plug heater core tubes securely to prevent coolant leakage from heater core (18476) during heater air plenum chamber removal. 4. Remove three nuts located below the windshield wiper motor (17508) retaining the LH end of the heater air plenum chamber (18471) to the dash panel (01610). 5. Remove one nut retaining the upper LH corner of the A/C evaporator core housing (19A559) to the dash panel. 6. Remove LH and RH lower instrument panel insulators. 7. Disconnect two vacuum supply hoses from vacuum source. Push grommet and vacuum supply hose into passenger compartment. 8. Remove all instrument panel retaining screws and pull the instrument panel (04320) back as far as possible without disconnecting any wire harnesses. 9. Loosen the RH door sill plate and remove the RH side cowl trim panel. 10. Remove cross body brace and disconnect wiring harness from A/C electronic door actuator motor (19E616) and disconnect the sensor tube from the evaporator case connector. 11. Disconnect the vacuum jumper harness at the multiple vacuum connector near the heater outlet floor duct (18C433). 12. Disconnect the white vacuum hose from the heater and A/C air inlet duct door vacuum

1. Remove the following component: For a 3.4L engine, remove the air cleaner assembly. For a 3.8L engine, remove the fuel injector sight shield. 2. Drain the coolant. Use Hose Clamp Pliers in order to position aside the heater hose inlet and outlet clamp at the heater core. See Fig. 41 . Disconnect the inlet and outlet heater hose from the heater core. Remove the right and left insulators. Remove the floor carpet around heater core area. 3. Remove the rear floor air outlet duct from the holes in the floor reinforcement. Disconnect the rear floor air outlet duct from the heater core outlet cover. See Fig. 31 . Remove the bolts from the vacuum harness bracket and position bracket aside. NOTE: Position the heater core outlet cover downward and rearward in order to disconnect the cover from the rear area floor duct assembly. 4. Remove the screws from the heater core outlet cover. Remove the heater core outlet cover. See Fig. 32 . Remove the screws from the heater core cover. Remove the heater core cover. Remove and discard the seals from the heater core cover. See Fig. 33 . Remove the caulk from the heater core cover. 5. Remove and discard the outer seal from the heater core. See Fig. 34 . Remove the screw from the heater core line clamp. See Fig. 35 . Remove the heater core retaining clamp. Remove the screw from the heater core pipe retainer clamp. Remove the heater core from the HVAC lower case. See Fig. 36 . 6. Remove and discard the lower seal from the HVAC case. See Fig. 37 . Remove and discard the center seal from the HVAC case. Remove and discard the upper seal from the HVAC lower case. Remove and discard the side seals from the HVAC lower case.

Condition Some customers may comment on an inoperative or intermittent Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) blower motor. Others may comment that the blower motor speed may momentarily drop or that the blower motor continues to run after the key is turned off. Cause This condition may be caused by a voltage spike from the wiper motor. The voltage spike may cause a logic lock up in the blower motor control module that may be either momentary or permanent. Correction DO THIS DON’T DO THIS Install a Capacitor at the Blower Motor Control Module Connector Technicians are to install a capacitor, P/N 25073556, at the blower motor control module connector using the following procedure: 1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Refer to the Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect procedure in the Engine Electrical section of SI. 2. Remove the right closeout/insulator panel. Refer to the Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement-Right procedure in the Instrument Panel, Gages and Console section of SI. DO NOT replace the Blower Motor Control Module, Blower Motor or the HVAC Control Head

The heater-A/C housing assembly must be removed from the vehicle and disassembled for service access of the blower motor, blower motor wheel, heater core, evaporator coil, blend-air door, and each of the various mode control doors. WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY . REMOVAL 1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. 2. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle. Refer to: “Body and Frame : Interior Moulding/Trim : Dashboard/Instrument Panel : Service and Repair” See: Body and Frame\Interior Moulding / Trim\Dashboard / Instrument Panel\Service and Repair 3. If the vehicle is not equipped with air conditioning, go to Step 6. If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, recover the refrigerant from the refrigerant system. Refer to: “Heating and Air Conditioning : Service and Repair” See: Service and Repair 4. Disconnect the liquid line refrigerant line fitting from the evaporator inlet tube. 5. Disconnect the accumulator inlet tube refrigerant line fitting from the evaporator outlet tube. Install plugs in, or tape over all of the opened refrigerant line fittings. 6. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: “Engine, Cooling and Exhaust : Cooling System : Service and Repair” See: Engine, Cooling and Exhaust\Cooling System\Service and Repair 7. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core tubes. Install plugs in, or tape over the opened heater core tubes. 8. Remove the four nuts from the heater-A/C housing mounting studs on the engine compartment side of the dash panel. 9. Remove the nut that secures the heater-A/C housing mounting brace to the stud on the passenger compartment side of the dash panel. 10. Pull the heater-A/C housing rearward far enough for the mounting studs and the evaporator condensate drain tube to clear the dash panel holes. 11. Remove the heater-A/C housing from the vehicle. DISASSEMBLY 1. Place the heater-A/C housing on a work bench, with the heater-A/C housing cover facing down. 2. Remove the two screws that secure the heater-A/C housing cover to the top of the blower motor housing cover. 3. If the vehicle is so equipped, unplug the two vacuum harness connectors from the recirculation air door actuator. 4. Unplug the vacuum harness connector from the panel-defrost door actuator. 5. Remove the four screws that secure the floor duct to the bottom of the heater-A/C housing and remove the duct from the housing.
