The fluid level screw is intended to be used for diagnosing a transaxle fluid leak or resetting the transaxle fluid level after service that involves a loss of fluid. Inspect The fluid level should be checked when the transaxle is near Room temperature or at 40° (104° . C F) CAUTION: Removal of the fluid level screw when the transaxle fluid is hot may cause injury. Use care to avoid contact of transaxle fluid to exhaust pipe. The engine must be running when the transaxle fluid level screw is removed, or excessive fluid loss will occur. Since the actual fluid level is unknown, stand clear when removing the fluid level screw. Have a container ready to capture any lost fluid. WARNING: Do not turn the engine off with the fluid level screw removed as you can be injured by hot transaxle fluid being expelled out of the fluid check hole. 1. Let vehicle idle for three to five minutes with accessories off. 2. Apply brake 3. Move shift lever through all gear ranges, pausing three seconds in each range. 4. Place shift lever in Park. Important: Vehicle must be kept level on the hoist. 5. Raise vehicle on hoist. 6. Place oil container under fluid level screw. 7. Remove the fluid level screw with the engine running at idle. 8. Fluid level should be at the bottom of the fluid check hole. Because the transaxle operates correctly over a range of fluid levels, fluid may or may not drain out of the fluid check hole when the fluid level screw is removed. If fluid drains through the fluid check hole, this transaxle may have been overfilled. When fluid stops draining, the fluid level is correct and the fluid level screw may be installed. If fluid does not drain through the fluid check hole, the transaxle fluid level may be low. Proceed to ADDING TRANSAXLE FLUID. 9. Install fluid level screw. Tighten 12 N.m (106 lb in) 10. Lower vehicle. 11. Shut off engine. Adding Transaxle Fluid: With the engine running, add fluid at the vent cap location in half liter (1 pint) increments until fluid drains through the fluid check hole. Allow the fluid to finish draining through the fluid check hole. 1. Install fluid level screw. Tighten 12 N.m (106 lb in) 2. Lower vehicle.

Automatic Transaxle 2-3 Shift Flare During First Minutes of Driving After Cold Soak (Perform Bulletin Procedure) Models: 2002 Saturn S-Series Vehicles with Automatic Transaxle (RPOs MP6, MP7) Attention: General Manager, Fixed Operations Manager, Parts Manager, Technician Condition: Some customers of 2002 S-series vehicles with MP6 or MP7 automatic transaxles may comment on a 2-3 shift flare during the first few minutes of driving after vehicle cold soak. Cause: This condition may be caused by improper pressure, a leak in the 2nd clutch circuit, improper clutch plate finish on 2nd and 3rd clutches, a restriction in the 3rd clutch oil delivery path in the end cover, or improper surface finish in the piston bores of the 2-3 clutch housing. Correction: To correct this condition, duplicate by cold soaking the vehicle the amount of time at temperature described by the owner. Refer to procedure in this bulletin. Service Procedure Verify proper transaxle pressures by installing gauge and performing stepped pressure test after cold soak. Refer to “Stepped Pressure Test” procedure in the 2002 Saturn S-Series Automatic Transaxle Service Manual. ^ If pressures are low, follow the diagnostic chart for DTC P0745 for possible causes of low pressure. Refer to “P0745 – PC Solenoid Pressure Low” diagnostic in the 2002 Saturn S-Series Automatic Transaxle Service Manual. ^ If pressures are within normal ranges, proceed to Step 2. Remove the transaxle end cover. Refer to “End Cover Replacement” in the 2002 Saturn S-Series Automatic Transaxle Service Manual. Check torque on input shaft nut and end cover 3rd clutch oil passage for restrictions. ^ Input shaft nut torque should be 150 N.m (111 ft-lb). If nut is found to be loose, remove nut, clean threads and install new nut using Service Manual procedures and proceed to check 3rd oil passage. ^ Check 3rd oil passage in the end cover by pouring transaxle fluid through it and another passage. If the passage is restricted, you will notice significantly less fluid flow through it. If 3rd clutch passage is found to be restricted, install new end cover per Service Manual procedures and retest for concern. ^ If nut and 3rd clutch passage are okay, proceed to Step 4. Remove transaxle from vehicle. Refer to “Transaxle Removal” in the 2002 Saturn S-Series Automatic Transaxle Service Manual. Disassemble transaxle and install new 2-3 clutch housing, clutch pistons and clutch plates. Refer to “Transaxle Disassemble” in the 2002 Saturn S-Series Automatic Transaxle Service Manual.

Service Engine Soon (SES) Light On, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0741, Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Excessive Slip, Transaxle Chuggle, Slip/Surge (Inspect and/or Replace Various Internal Transaxle Components) 1998-2002 Cadillac Eldorado 1998-2004 Cadillac Seville 1999-2004 Cadillac DeVille 2000-2003 Oldsmobile Aurora with 4T80-E Auto Transaxle (RPO MH1) Some customer may comment on the SES light on and a chuggle or surge. Diagnostics may show excessive TCC slip speed and DTC P0741 will be current code Seal damage may allow the TCC apply fluid to leak into the channel plate, causing excessive TCC slippage under certain conditions, eventually causing no TCC apply.

Some 2000-2007 Taurus, 2000-2005 Sable, 2000-2003 Windstar, and 2004-2007 Freestar/Monterey vehicles, equipped with a 4F50N, AX4N, or AX4S transaxle, may exhibit an erratic fluid level reading on the transaxle dipstick and possible leaks around the filler tube and grommet. The condition may be due to a restricted transaxle vent. ACTION: Repair the transaxle vent restriction by replacing the transaxle vent with a 90° vent stem, small hose clamp, two (2) tie raps, and 24″ (61 cm) of 5/16″ (8 mm) vacuum hose. The 5/16″ (8 mm) vacuum hose will be routed from the 90° vent on the transaxle back to the cowl area, next to the brake master cylinder and tie rapped in place with the end of the hose facing down. Refer to the following Service Procedures. NOTE: ON WINDSTAR, FREESTAR AND MONTEREY SEAL THE COWL PANEL GRILLE (COWL TOP VENT PANEL) AREA, SEE TSB 06-14- 10. NOTE: LEAKS MAY BE MISDIAGNOSED AS COMING FROM THE PAN GASKET. ALWAYS FOLLOW WORKSHOP MANUAL, SECTION 307- 01 TO LOCATE THE SOURCE OF A LEAK, AND LEAK CHECK WITH BLACK LIGHT AND DYE. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector. Disconnect the crankcase vent tube(s) from the air cleaner outlet pipe. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the air cleaner outlet pipe from the throttle body. Release the air cleaner housing clamp(s). Separate the air cleaner cover from the air cleaner tray. Windstar, Freestar and Monterey only: Remove cowl panel grille by following the procedure in TSB 06-14-10. Disconnect the shift cable if located over the top of the vent. Remove the vent, pull straight up on the vent with locking pliers, or carefully pry the vent from the transaxle case. Install the replacement 90° vent stem. Windstar, Freestar, Monterey, Taurus, and Sable with column shifter – Must face to the right rear of the vehicle with the flat edge of vent base parallel to the chain cover boss (Figure 1) Taurus and Sable with floor shifter – Must face to the rear of the vehicle with the flat edge of vent base parallel to the chain cover boss (Figure 2) 10. Install one end of a 24″ (61 cm) long piece of 5/16″ (8 mm) vacuum hose to the 90° vent stem and secure with a small hose clamp. 11. Route the vacuum hose back and up to the cowl area and down next to the brake master cylinder. Carefully tie rap the hose in place next to the brake master cylinder (do not tie rap to brake lines), be sure the end of the hose is facing down and not directly above anything hot. Windstar, Freestar, and Monterey (Figure 3, 4, and 5) Taurus and Sable with column shifter (Figure 6) Taurus with floor shifter (Figure 7)

AUTOMATIC FWD MODELS REMOVAL 1) Remove battery and battery tray. On 3000GT, remove undercover(s). On Eclipse turbo, drain and remove intercooler. On all models, remove air cleaner and case. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels. Disconnect control cables at transaxle. Drain transaxle fluid. 2) On Mirage 1.6L, disconnect tension rod. On all models, disconnect neutral safety switch connector, oil cooler hoses and electrical connectors from transaxle. Disconnect speedometer cable and throttle control cable (if equipped). Remove starter motor. 3) On Galant models with electronically controlled suspension, remove air compressor and bracket. Disconnect front height sensor rod at lower control arm. 4) On all models, remove upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove engine undercover (if equipped). On all models, remove drive axle shafts. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Separate lower control arms from struts for access to axle shafts (if necessary). 5) Remove front exhaust pipe (if necessary). On Eclipse 4WD, Galant 4WD and 3000GT, remove right member and gusset. On 4WD models, separate transfer assembly from transaxle. Reference mark transfer assembly-to-drive shaft and remove transfer assembly. 6) On all models, remove transmission inspection (dust) cover. Place index mark on torque converter and drive plate for reassembly reference. Remove torque converter-to-drive plate bolts. Push torque converter away from engine into transaxle. 7) Support transaxle with jack. Remove transaxle mounts bolts, mounting brackets and remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Slide transaxle assembly to right and lower to remove. CAUTION: Ensure torque converter is fully seated in transaxle before installation. Always install new snap rings on inner constant velocity joints. INSTALLATION 1) To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten transaxle- to-engine bolts and torque converter-to-drive plate bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. 2) Ensure reference marks on torque converter-to-drive plate
