1. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum check valve (1) from the brake booster. 2. If the vacuum check valve (1) needs to be separated from the vacuum hose (3), release and reposition the clamp (2) on the vacuum hose (3) and remove the check valve (1) from the hose (3). 3. If replacing the vacuum check valve (1), remove the grommet (4) from the brake booster and discard the grommet. 4. If removing the vacuum hose (2), take note of the vacuum hose routing then disconnect from the engine intake manifold connection (3) by releasing tension on the vacuum hose clamp (1) and sliding the vacuum hose (2) off the intake manifold connection (3). Installation Procedure Important: A small amount of denatured alcohol can be used as an assembly aid when installing the vacuum check valve and/or grommet. Do NOT use soap. 1. If the vacuum hose (2) was removed, install the vacuum hose into position on the vehicle as noted prior to removal, then connect the vacuum hose (2) to the engine intake manifold connection (3) and secure with the vacuum hose clamp (1). 2. If the vacuum check valve (1) is being replaced, install a NEW grommet (4) to the brake booster. 3. If the vacuum check valve (1) was separated from the vacuum hose (3), install the check valve (1) to the vacuum hose (3). Install and secure the clamp (2) into position on the hose (3). 4. Connect the brake booster vacuum check valve (1) to the brake booster.

SYMPTOM When the engine is first started after the vehicle has sat overnight, customers may “feel” the release of the throttle plate through the accelerator pedal. Some describe it as a one-time “pop” sensation. Customers may have trouble explaining this phenomenon because: They can’t repeat it because it only happens one time, when the engine is cold. The accelerator pedal works normally at all other times. There are no other symptoms. It may be intermittent, happening only during cooler weather. PROBABLE CAUSE The symptom is caused by normal buildup of contaminants in the throttle bore, combined with expansion and contraction of the throttle body. CORRECTIVE ACTION Partially remove the throttle body, and clean it with Honda carburetor cleaner or throttle plate and induction cleaner. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Remove the breather tube from the air intake duct, unclip the vacuum lines from the duct, and remove the duct from the throttle body. See Fig. 1 . Fig. 1: Removing Air Intake Duct 2. Disconnect the TPS and MAP connectors from the throttle body. 3. Remove the throttle cable and, if equipped, the cruise control actuator cable from the throttle body. 4. Remove the throttle body mounting nuts and bolts, then slide the throttle body off its studs on the intake manifold chamber. Leave the coolant hoses connected. See Fig. 2 . 5. Put a shop towel under the throttle body, open the throttle, then clean out any contaminants from the intake manifold side of the throttle body with carburetor cleaner or throttle plate and induction cleaner. See Fig. 3 . NOTE: To avoid damaging the idle air control valve (IACV), spray the cleaner through the back of the throttle body, not the front.

1. Disconnect vacuum hose at speed control servo and install a vacuum gauge into the disconnected hose. 2. Start engine and observe gauge at idle. Vacuum gauge should read at least ten inches of mercury. 3. If vacuum is less than ten inches of mercury, determine source of leak. Check vacuum line to engine for leaks. Also check actual engine intake manifold vacuum. If manifold vacuum does not meet this requirement, check for poor engine performance and repair as necessary. 4. If vacuum line to engine is not leaking, check for leak at vacuum reservoir. To locate and gain access to reservoir, refer to Vacuum Reservoir REMOVAL /INSTALLATION . Disconnect vacuum line at reservoir and connect a hand-operated vacuum pump to reservoir fitting. Apply vacuum. Reservoir vacuum should not bleed off. If vacuum is being lost, replace reservoir. 5. Verify operation of one-way check valve and check it for leaks. a. Locate one-way check valve. The valve is located in vacuum line between vacuum reservoir and engine vacuum source. Disconnect vacuum hoses (lines) at each end of valve. b. Connect a hand-operated vacuum pump to reservoir end of check valve. Apply vacuum. Vacuum should not bleed off. If vacuum is being lost, replace one-way check valve. c. Connect a hand-operated vacuum pump to vacuum source end of check valve. Apply vacuum. Vacuum should flow through valve. If vacuum is not flowing, replace one-way check valve. Seal the fitting at opposite end of valve with a finger and apply vacuum. If vacuum will not hold, diaphragm within check valve has ruptured. Replace valve.

ISSUE Some 2005-2009 Escape Hybrid and 2006-2009 Mariner Hybrid vehicles may exhibit an intermittent Red Triangle On and Stop Safely Now message displayed on the message center accompanied by a sudden RPM loss/no start symptom with a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P1A0C. Vehicles may exhibit this symptom on the first start of the morning or after an extended idle. The symptom will clear on the next key cycle. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE For vehicles outside the new vehicle limited warranty, if diagnostics lead to replacing the throttle body you may use this procedure to clean the throttle body as an alternative to replacing it. This procedure is not covered by the new vehicle limited warranty. NOTE THIS CLEANING PROCEDURE CAN ONLY BE USED ON NON-COATED THROTTLE BODIES. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 303-04C Removal and Installation – Throttle Body. 1. Remove the throttle body. 2. With the throttle body positioned to the side, open the throttle plate. 3. Using Motorcraft® Choke and Linkage Cleaner or equivalent, spray the throttle body plate and bore. 4. Using a suitable (nylon) brush, clean the edges of the throttle plate and the mating surface of the throttle bore to remove all carbon build up. 5. Reapply Motorcraft® Choke and Linkage Cleaner or equivalent and wipe clean with a lint-free cloth. 6. Remove old throttle body gasket and discard. Install a new throttle body gasket. 7. Install the throttle body.

1. If equipped, turn the air suspension switch OFF. 2. Disconnect battery ground cable. 3. Raise and support the vehicle; refer to Section 100-02. 4. Drain transmission fluid and remove the transmission fluid pan and filter; refer to Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill in this section. 5. CAUTION: Do not pull on the plastic lead frame. This may cause damage to the connector ends. Carefully pry up on the locking tabs to disconnect the sensors. Disconnect the molded lead frame from the sensors. Disconnect the molded lead frame from the sensors. 1. Disconnect the shift solenoid SSA/SS1 and SSB/SS2. 2. Disconnect the torque converter clutch (TCC). 3. Disconnect the electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid. 4. Disconnect the bulkhead inter connector. 6. Remove the shift solenoid and the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the shift solenoid and the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid. 7. Remove the manual control valve detent lever spring (7A261) 1. Remove the bolt. 2. Remove the manual control valve detent lever spring 8. Remove the 23 valve body to case bolts. 9. Remove the main control valve body (7A100) Installation 1. NOTE: Make sure that the drive pin of the manual valve detent lever assembly engages the manual valve in the proper location prior to installing the bolts. Position the main control valve body gasket and main control valve body using the two alignment bolts as a guide. 2. NOTE: The main control valve body bolts will be tightened in later steps. Loosely install the bolts. 3. NOTE: The main control valve body bolts will be tightened in later steps. Loosely install the bolts. 4. Install the manual control valve detent lever spring. 1. Position the manual control valve detent lever spring. 2. Install the bolt.
