NOTICE: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly. NOTICE: Once the steering column is removed from the vehicle, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping the column assembly on its end could collapse the steering shaft or loosen the plastic injections that maintain column rigidity. Leaning on the column assembly could cause the jacket to bend or deform. Any of the above damage could impair the columns collapsible design. If it is necessary to remove the steering wheel. Under no condition should the end of the shaft be hammered on, as hammering could loosen the plastic injections which maintain column rigidity. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Disable Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Remove the steering wheel. Remove the SIR coil. Remove the ignition lock cylinder. Disconnect the theft deterrent immobilizer connector. Remove the immobilizer. Remove the ignition switch. Remove the windshield washer switch. Remove the turn signal switch. Remove the I/P driver knee bolster energy absorber. Remove the sound insulator. 12. Remove the coupler bolt from the coupler/steering column shaft connection.

REMOVAL Wheels must be in a straight forward position and the key must be in the Lock position when removing or installing column to ensure proper alignment of components during installation. 1. Remove inflator module as outlined in Air Bag. Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags(SRS). 2. Remove knee bolster and steering column reinforcement plate. 3. Disconnect electrical connectors from column. 4. Remove pinch bolt from intermediate shaft, Fig. 13. 5. Remove lower support bracket from vehicle. 6. Remove upper column support from instrument panel, then the column from vehicle. INSTALLATION 1. Install column in vehicle and support at upper bracket with two bolts, Fig. 14, do not tighten at this time. 2. Install column lower support bracket in vehicle, do not tighten at this time. 3. Connect column intermediate shaft to steering rack, install pinch bolt and torque to 35 ft. lbs. 1994 Cadillac Seville SLS V8-4.6L VIN Y 4. 5. 6. 7. Torque upper and lower column support bolts to 20 ft. lbs., then the lower bracket to column screws to 12 ft. lbs. Connect electrical connectors to column. Install knee bolster and column reinforcement plate. Install steering wheel inflator module as outlined in Air Bag. Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags(SRS).

NOTE: Before starting this procedure, be certain to turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Remove the trim from the right and left front door sills. Remove the trim from the left and right cowl side inner panels. Remove the steering column opening cover from the instrument panel. See: Steering Column Opening Cover and Knee Blocker Replacement Remove the two screws that secure the inside hood latch release handle to the instrument panel lower reinforcement and lower the release handle to the floor. Disconnect the driver side airbag module wire harness connector from the instrument panel wire harness at the instrument panel lower reinforcement. If the vehicle is so equipped, disconnect the overdrive lockout switch wire harness connector from the instrument panel wire harness near the instrument panel lower reinforcement. Remove the steering column from the vehicle, but do not remove the driver side airbag module, the steering wheel, or the switches from the steering column. Be certain that the steering wheel is locked and secured from rotation to prevent the loss of clockspring centering. Refer to Steering and Suspension/Steering/Steering Column/Service and Repair. See: Steering and Suspension/Steering/Steering Column/Service and Repair From under the driver side of the instrument panel, perform the following: a. Remove the screw from the center of the headlamp and dash to instrument panel bulkhead wire harness connector and disconnect the connector. b. Disconnect the two body wire harness connectors from the two instrument panel wire harness connectors that are secured to the outboard side of the instrument panel bulkhead connector. c. Disconnect the three wire harness connectors (one from the body wire harness, and two from the headlamp and dash wire harness) from the three junction block connector receptacles located closest to the dash panel. d. Unsnap the plastic retainer clip that secures the park brake release linkage rod to the lever on the back side of the park brake release handle and disengage the linkage rod end from the lever on the handle. e. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the stop lamp switch connector receptacle. f. Disconnect the vacuum harness connector located near the left end of the heater-A/C housing. Remove the center support bracket from the instrument panel. See: Instrument Panel Center Support Bracket Replacement Remove the screw that secures the instrument panel wire harness ground eyelets to the left side of the Airbag Control Module (ACM) mount on the floor panel transmission tunnel. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the ACM connector receptacle. Remove the glove box from the instrument panel. Refer to Body and Frame/Interior Trim/Glove Compartment/Service and Repair. See: Glove Compartment/Service and Repair Reaching through the instrument panel glove box opening, perform the following: a. Disconnect the two halves of the radio antenna coaxial cable connector near the center of the lower instrument panel glove box opening. b. Disengage the antenna half of the radio antenna coaxial cable from the retainer clip near the outboard side of the lower instrument panel glove box opening. c. Disconnect the blower motor wire harness connector located near the heater-A/C housing support brace on the inboard side of the instrument panel glove box opening. From under the passenger side of the instrument panel, perform the following: a. If the vehicle is so equipped, disconnect the two instrument panel wire harness connectors from the Infinity speaker amplifier connector receptacles on the right cowl side inner panel. b. Removal Procedure Caution: Refer to SIR Handling Caution in Service Precautions. 1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Air Bag Systems. 2. Ensure the turn signal lever on the multifunction switch is in the neutral position or the OFF position. 3. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators. 4. Loosen the steering column bracket nuts. 5. Remove the steering column upper and lower trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement – On Vehicle. 6. Remove the 2 wire harness straps from the steering column wire harness. 7. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer from the auto trans shift lock control. 8. Disconnect the steering column bulkhead connector from the vehicle wire harness. 9. Disconnect the gray and the black connectors of the switch from the column bulkhead connector. 10. Remove the 2 TORX head screws from the multifunction switch. 11. Remove the multifunction turn signal/hazard switch. Installation Procedure

1996 Acura TL Heater-Evaporator Unit Replacement

1. Recover the refrigerant with a Recovery/Recycling/Charging System. 2. Remove the dashboard lower cover, the knee bolster and the glove box. 3. Remove the ECM. 4. Remove the ABS control unit and the radiator fan control module together with the bracket, then remove the TCM. Remove the security control unit. 5. Disconnect the connectors from the power transistor, blower motor high relay, evaporator temperature sensor, blower motor and the heater sub- harness, then remove the blower motor and heater subharness connectors from the brackets. Disconnect the passenger’s airbag harness clip. 6. Remove the wire harness clips, the three self-tap- ping screws and the pipe cover. 7. Remove the expansion valve covers, then disconnect the suction line and unbolt the expansion valve from the evaporator. NOTE: Plug or cap the lines immediately after disconnecting them to avoid moisture and dust contamination. 8. Disconnect the drain hose, and remove the seven self-tapping screws. Then pull the evaporator out of the front passengers side to remove it. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the evaporator fins when removing the evaporator. 9. Install in the reverse order of removal. Make note of the following items. If you’re installing a new evaporator, add refrigerant oil (ND-OIL 8). Replace the O-rings with new ones at each fitting, and apply a thin coat of refrigerant oil (ND-OIL 8) before installing them. NOTE: Be sure to use the right O-rings for HFC134a (R-134a) to avoid leakage. Be careful not to damage the evaporator fins when installing the evaporator. Install the expansion valve capillary tube with the capillary tube in contact with the suction line directly, and wrap it with tape.
