SERVICE INFORMATION If a 1999 Maxima will not start and the Security lamp is on solid with the ignition key turned to “ON”, use CONSULT or CONSULT-II with the NATS card to verify NATS DTC “ID DISCORD, IMM-ECM” is stored. If this DTC appears, use the Service Procedure in this bulletin to diagnose and repair the vehicle. For an introduction to and description of the Nissan Anti-Theft System (NATS), please refer to NTB99-063. SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE: This procedure is described using CONSULT-II. CONSULT may also be used to perform the diagnostic procedures outlined below. However, the screens and steps will differ slightly from those shown here. 1. Install the NATS card (purple) into slot 1 of CONSULT-II (see Figure 1). Figure 2 3. Turn the ignition switch to “ON” (do not start the engine). CONSULT-II will then turn on automatically (see Figure 3). Now touch “START”. Figure 3 4. Select “NATS V2.0″ (see Figure 4).

INTRODUCTION Nissan has determined that some 2004 model year Nissan Maxima vehicles may have a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety. There is a possibility that the tempered glass for the SkyView Roof may not have been cooled properly after the forming process, which could create excessive internal stress in the glass. This could eventually cause the glass to shatter into small pebble-like pieces and injure vehicle occupants. This issue does not affect Maxima vehicles equipped with the power glass sunroof. To prevent this condition from occurring, Nissan is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign to inspect and replace, if required, the glass in the SkyView Roof. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Confirm the Skyview Roof Glass needs to be replaced as follows: For Vehicles With A Production Date Of October 2003 Or Before: • Replace the Glass. Continue with step 2 of this procedure. For Vehicles With A Production Date Of November 2003 Or December 2003: • Replace the Glass if the dots around the “CARLEX” name (located at the driver’s side rear corner of the Glass) look like any one of the examples shown in Figure 1. In this case continue with step 2 of this procedure. Remove Skyview Roof Glass CAUTION: Use suitable covers to protect upholstery, carpet, paint, etc. when performing this procedure. 2. Apply masking tape around the edges of the Skyview Roof Glass (see Figure 2). • This will help protect the body paint. • Use Scotch 3M Safe-Release Painters’ Masking Tape #2090 (or equivalent).

APPLIED VEHICLES: 2004-2008 Maxima (A34) 2004-2006 Altima (L31) with VQ35 engine ONLY 2004-2009 Quest (V42) IF YOU CONFIRM: There is a high frequency buzzing / whining noise coming from the secondary timing chain system. • The noise should increase in frequency with engine speed (RPM). • If the noise does not increase with engine speed, the timing chain system may not be the cause. Refer to the appropriate section of the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for further diagnosis. ACTION: 1. Replace both secondary timing chains and both secondary timing chain tensioner “shoes” with the ones from the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin (on Page 2). 2. Change the engine oil and filter. 3. For repair procedure, refer to the SERVICE PROCEDURE section of this bulletin (starting on Page 3). SERVICE PROCEDURE Write down all radio station presets. 2. Disconnect both battery cables, negative cable first. 3. Remove the secondary timing chains. Refer to the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) if needed. NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the valve covers or intake collector. • Before removing the crankshaft pulley, set it to 0° Top Dead Center (TDC). • Use Tool J-50288 to secure the flywheel / flex plate when removing the crankshaft pulley and camshaft sprockets (no picture shown). NOTE: The camshaft sprockets’ bolts will be removed and installed while being held by all three (3) timing chains. • If the crankshaft is determined to be 360° off from 0° TDC on #1 cylinder compression stroke after removing the front timing chain case (front cover), put the crankshaft pulley back on, and then rotate the crankshaft 360° (when camshaft and crankshaft sprocket mating marks are aligned). • Use the chain tensioner pins (pin) from Tool Kit J-50246 to hold all 4. CAUTION: – Before servicing SRS, turn the ignition switch off, disconnect both battery cables and wait for at least 10 minutes. – Always work from the side of air bag module. 1. Remove lower lid from steering wheel, and disconnect air bag module connector. 2. Remove side lids. Using the TAMPER RESISTANT TORX (Size T50), remove left and right special bolts. Air bag module can then be removed. CAUTION: – Always place air bag module with pad side facing upward. – Do not attempt to disassemble air bag module. – The special bolts are coated with bonding agent. Do not use old bolts after removal; replace with new ones. 1996 Nissan-Datsun Maxima V6-2968cc 3.0L DOHC MFI (VQ30DE) – - – Replace air bag module if it has been dropped or sustained an impact. Do not expose the air bag module to temperatures exceeding 90°C (194°F). Do not allow oil, grease or water to come in contact with the air bag module. 3. Set steering wheel in the neutral position. 4. Disconnect horn connector and remove nuts. 5. Using steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. Be careful not to over-tighten puller bolt on steering wheel. CAUTION: – Do not tap or bump the steering wheel. 6. Remove steering column cover. 7. Disconnect connectors and remove the four screws. The spiral cable can then be removed. CAUTION: – Do not attempt to disassemble spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable. Installation – Air Bag Module and Spiral Cable 1. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position. 2. Make sure that the spiral cable is in the neutral position.

2000-2003 Maxima (A33) IF YOU CONFIRM: The driver’s seat will not move in the forward or backward direction, ACTIONS: 1. Confirm this bulletin applies (see steps 1 and 2 of the Service Procedure). 2. If needed, install the Seat Slide Motor Kit (see Parts Information). IMPORTANT: DO NOT replace the entire seat adjuster assembly for this incident, if it should occur. This is the ONLY approved repair procedure for this incident. A claim to Nissan for the repair of this incident may be denied if the repair is not performed exactly as outlined in this bulletin.
