Check the following wire connection for open circuit according to wiring diagram:Relay carrier in E-box, plenum chamber, position 3Terminal Harness connector atignition coils Terminal 8 1 Specified value: Wire resistance max 1.5 – If necessary, repair wire connection. Some 1999-2004 Navigator, 2002-2003 Blackwood, 2003-2005 Aviator, 2003-2004 Marauder and 2003-2004 Mustang vehicles built before 12/19/2004 equipped with 4.6L 4V/5.4 4V engine may exhibit a runs rough, lacks power, and engine misfire, prompted by a MIL light and DTC codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308, and P0316. ACTION Diagnose engine for engine misfire concern. If diagnostics determine an engine misfire which is characterized by leakage through exhaust valve(s), only replace the affected cylinder head(s). 1. At the crank position sensor, check for battery voltage to be present on the Red wire with the key on and cranking. The Black wire should be a good ground and the Blue wire should have 5 volts on it from the computer. One may have to disconnect the crank sensor to check for the 5 volt reference. 2. During crank look for a good 5 volt square wave signal on the Blue wire. 3. Check at the ignition coils for good battery voltage key on and cranking. If there is a loss of voltage during crank check the ignition failsafe relay. 4. Check for any stored engine codes. Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Ignition Failsafe Sensor The ignition failsafe sensor supplies battery voltage to the ignition coils. The ignition coils can look like they have good battery voltage key on but during crank the ignition failsafe relay can stop sending voltage to the ignition coils.

Test throttle body voltages with scan tool. Potentiometer #2 signal voltage ignition on, accelerator pedal position CTP 0.3-0.9 VDC, WOT > CTP value Potentiometer #1 signal voltage Ignition on, accelerator pedal position CTP 4.0-4.6 VDC, WOT < CTP value.

1 Remove paneling from sliding/pop-up roof 2 Remove sliding/pop-up roof cover 3 Remove headliner
4 Pull off water drain hoses (1) CAUTION: Installation: Do not bend water drain hoses. 5 Insert assembly pliers (5) on both sides
See “Special Tool” given below. 6 Unscrew screws (2 and 3) NOTE: Installation: Do not mix up screws (2, 3). Screw on sliding/pop-up roof frame – 8 N.m 7 Pry out tilting/sliding roof frame with help of second mechanic
