ENGINE – 5.0L – NEW TORQUE-TO-YIELD CYLINDER HEAD BOLT KIT AND NEW PROCEDURES – SERVICE TIP FORD: 1988 THUNDERBIRD 1988-91 CROWN VICTORIA 1988-95 MUSTANG 1991-93 THUNDERBIRD LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 COUGAR 1988-90 TOWN CAR 1988-91 GRAND MARQUIS 1988-92 MARK VII 1991-93 COUGAR LIGHT TRUCK: 1988-95 BRONCO, ECONOLINE, F-150-350 SERIES ISSUE: In 1992, the type of cylinder head bolts used on the 5.0L engines was changed to the torque-to-yield bolts. Depending on the build date of the engine, the 1992 model year engines came with either torque-to-yield bolts or standard torque, not a combination of the two (2). In 1993, torque-to-yield bolts were used on all 5.OL engines. ACTION: Refer to the following for proper bolt identification, usage and torque specifications. ^ The two (2) types of bolts being used are physically different. Refer to Figure 1. ^ The standard torque bolt is a non-flanged hex head bolt. ^ The torque-to-yield bolt is a flanged head bolt. ^ The two (2) types of bolts may be used on any of the 5.0L engines. ^ The bolts must be all the same style on each cylinder head. CAUTION: DO NOT USE BOTH TYPES OF CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS ON ONE (1) CYLINDER HEAD. EACH CYLINDER HEAD MUST HAVE ALL OF ONE (1) TYPE OF RETAINING BOLT: STANDARD TORQUE OR TORQUE-TO-YIELD. The torque-to-yield cylinder head bolts will be available only in a packaged kit (F3ZZ-6065-E). The kit will contain the following: Five (5) 7/16-14×3.94 Bolts Five (5) 7/16-14×2.49 Bolts One (1) 3/8-16×7/16-3.93 Stud One (1) Instruction Sheet (I.S. # 6605) Some applications use a various quantity of studs for fastening of items to the cylinder head. TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE NON-FLANGED STANDARD HEX HEAD BOLTS, TIGHTEN IN TWO (2) STEPS AS FOLLOWS:

INSTALLATION 1. Assemble the harness bar support rods as shown below using the provided heim joints and nuts. Leave at least ¼” of thread showing on each heim joint to allow for adjustment during installation. Do not fully tighten the nuts at this time. NOTE: The smaller heim joint has reverse thread. 2. On both sides of the vehicle’s interior, remove the plastic upper seat belt bolt cover and remove the upper bolt as shown here. The factory retaining washer needs to be removed so the factory bolt can be completely removed from the upper mount. NOTE: The factory retaining washer will be re- used in the installation process. 3. Assemble the upper mounting hardware as shown in this picture and bolt the assembly into vehicle. Do not fully tighten the bolt at this time. 4. Remove the factory lower harness bolt cover (rubber) and remove the bolt from the vehicle. Remove the factory retaining washer and remove the bolt from the harness mount. Assemble the lower hardware as shown in this picture. Bolt assembly into the vehicle. Do not fully tighten bolt at this time. 5. Connect the upper support rod mounts to the harness bar using the supplied bolt, washer and nut. 6. Check for proper installation and adjust as necessary. Tighten all bolts and nuts. Replace the lower rubber cover and upper plastic cover. NOTE: The inside of the upper cover needs to be clearanced to allow for proper fit. The finished installation should look like this:

Valve timing procedures Valve timing procedures Ensure crankshaft at TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure crankshaft pulley timing mark aligned with 0° timing mark on chain cover [1]. Ensure notch on camshaft points upwards [2]. If notch not visible, turn crankshaft one more turn. Install timing gears as follows: Ensure crankshaft gear and intermediate shaft gear timing marks aligned [3]. Install LH balancer shaft [4]. Ensure timing marks on intermediate shaft gears and LH balancer shaft gear aligned [5] & [6]. Ensure RH balancer shaft gear and oil pump gear timing marks aligned [7]. Install oil pump housing complete with RH balancer shaft. Ensure timing marks on oil pump gear and crankshaft gear aligned [8]. Install injection pump as follows [9] : Ensure notch on injection pump gear aligned with mark ‘T’ on flange [10]. During installation of injection pump: Notch on gear moves in direction of arrow. Install timing chain as follows:
