ENGINE WILL NOT START NVIS/NATS SYSTEM DESCRIPTION/KEY REGISTRATION This version of NTB03-031 amends the Applied Vehicles. Please discard all paper copies of the earlier versions. APPLIED VEHICLES: 2005 and later Altima (L31), Pathfinder (R51), Frontier (D40), Xterra (N50), 350Z (Z33) 2004 and later Maxima (A34), Quest (V42), Armada (TA60), Titan (A60), Murano (Z50) 2004 350Z (Z33) built after the following:NOTE: ^ For 2003 Murano, and 2003-2004 350Z built before the above Date and VIN’s, see NTB02-071 ^ This bulletin does NOT cover 2002-2004 Altima. SERVICE INFORMATION ^ This bulletin covers the latest version of the Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System/Nissan Anti-Theft System (NVIS/NATS). This system, referred to as “NATS”, is standard equipment on the Applied Vehicles listed above. ^ This version of NATS uses advanced anti-theft functions which are “password protected”. This helps prevent “unauthorized access” into the NATS registration procedure. ^ To obtain the password from ASIST, first use CONSULT-II to get the “BCM-specific” 5-digit number (PIN) code from the vehicle. ^ Unlike earlier NATS systems, this NATS system DOES NOT need to be Re-Initialized if the Electronic Control Unit (ECM) is replaced. NOTE: The ECM and Body Control Module (BCM) do work together, but the BCM in this system controls the information necessary to “tell” the ECM to start the vehicle. IMPORTANT: The NATS Procedure in this bulletin is for the Applied Vehicles only. Do not use this procedure on other NATS-equipped vehicles.

Look under the dash to view the brake pedal pivot pin. . Figure 1 2. Inspect the right side (inboard side) of the brake pedal pivot pin (see Figure 2). • See Figure 3 on the next page for photos of OK and NG conditions. 3. Vehicle Application: Customer Concern: Tests/Procedures: Potential Causes: Tech Tips: 2004 Nissan Murano 3.5L, USA/Canada Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is ON. Bank 1 catalytic converter code P0420. 1. Check scan data for fuel trims to see if the system is in proper fuel control – look for 0% plus or minus 10% in generic or 90 – 110 % alpha in manufacture specific. 2. Verify there are no exhaust leaks. 3. Drive the vehicle and check the bank 1 rear O2 sensor activity on the scan tool or with a voltmeter to see if the bank 1 rear O2 sensor is cross counting like a typical front O2 sensor would. Catalytic Converter If in manufacture specific with the scan tool, Nissan displays fuel trims in alpha. 100% alpha is the same as 0% fuel trim. This vehicle has front air fuel ratio sensors – not O2 sensors. Bank 1 is the firewall bank. Bank 2 is the radiator bank. Before the catalytic converter lights off, the rear O2 sensor voltage is usually down around 0.2 – 0.4 volts or so but when the catalytic converter lights off, it uses up a lot of the oxygen so the rear O2 sensor voltage will typically reads around 0.6 – 0.7 volts and have some movement but not a lot of movement and should not cross count above and below 0.5 volts. The catalytic converter is covered under the 8 year 80,000 mile federal emissions warranty. 2004 Nissan Quest 3.5L, USA/Canada
